I hear influences from Haydn in the introduction, a snippet from Beethoven's Emperor concerto reworked and expanded imaginatively for the first theme of the allegro, and a fugue Bach might have written on one of his better days starting at 6:07. On the whole, one of the finest string quartets ever written, and this from one of the greatest chemists of the 19th century!

Suffice it to say, Borodin displayed outstanding mastery of counterpoint here, and throughout the entire quartet.
