Her vocals and piano playing can each stand alone as great but when combined they become phenomenal. I've watched this twenty times in five years and it leaves me in awe over and over again.
@Wisegeorge This is SO very true. I've been saying it for years now. It's as if both sets of chords (vocal and piano) are a natural extension of the other.
I know that people often make fun of others that click on "dislike" and I don't bother with that. But here - I really have to scratch my head and wonder why someone would bother to click "dislike" in the face of such a performance of piano and voice and style. For heavens sake if you don't get it then just - move on. Thanks for posting this. I am only familiar with the original studio recording.
@wolmaransfg Nice. You really think my comment deserves that? I simply say that I don't like this piece and say why in a civil way and you think that the proper way to respond is to personally insult me? This is a great piano performance and the song is of course classic. But the mood of the one doesn't seem to have anything to do with the other, IM(H)O. Are you just a rabid fanboy or would you care to discuss your position?
Remarkable, just to begin with as I watched I realized my toe was tapping and at the end I was applauding. Outstanding. Very impressive, I liked it a lot.
PERFECT accompaniment by her band members. Unlike other performances, none 'got in the way' of her stunning piano solo - itself worth the price of admission.
her dream was to be a concert pianist , but was always dismayed that she was hindered from that genre because of her race . she is still one of the greatest pianist in my book bar non.
To all of the new, young players: greatness is when you play differently and better each time you play it. If you play it the same way each time, you might as well stay in the dressing-room and play the CD through the FOH.
What an incredible performance! I never knew she could improvise like this on the piano and show such a great love for Bach and baroque. Totally unique.
Stunning. Un-frickin-believable. Don't you wish other artists stayed as flexible as this, and were willing to rework their standards in new ways to prove their sheer brilliance? How many hours did she spend perfecting this version? It was worth every minute of effort.
@batsonjay - I am going to go ahead and say that she probably improvised most of this. She was a fantastic pianist with a broad classical and jazz influence. I imagine having played this song countless hundreds of times allowed her to express everything she wanted without having a rehearsed or prepared "version", per se.
It absolutely pushes me closer to grumpy when I see them not stand up and give you more respect for that "vry zn" multitask. I hope it's ok to have another listen. Thanks!
So amazing - as a musician, she's someone to look up to - for her incredible piano skill but also the emotion she's able to convey in her lyrics and delivery. (and only a mother goddess like her could wear an outfit like that. )
One of my all time favorites, played a little differently but I loved it. I wonder if Alicia Keys would give this song a treatment. With her classical piano training it could be a great version
OMG! This was a joyous performance. I have always liked Nina Simone, but I appreciate her so much more than I ever did once I lived a little and was able to understand her music even more.
Wow! What a performance! Only Nina - 100% from the heart, and who was blessed with a distinct voice and a remarkable talent at the piano. Her piano playing alone would fill a concert hall. One of the few who dared wear her heart on her sleeve; how we could do with more of this emotional honesty.
extraordinaire... Une artiste qui s'incline devant l'instrument et s'amuse à retracer l'histoire de la musique avec sa touche à elle. Une video rare; thank you for posting
Sheer class, beauty, and real life with its ups and downs... She is a lesson for us all, but suddenly ' that's a bosendorfer", humbling expereince for her as well... I want to be HER
Every live performance was different and exciting. It taught me what artistic expression is. Even the same song played night after night was changed by the moment's ambiance. Yes in her final years, she did not dress well. It was sad to realize that this great talent's health was rapidly declining. We love her dearly because she gave us so much love, pain and wisdom in her music. Turn off the lights and listen to The Other Woman, Porgy, Four Women.
Good Lord, that was amazing! I've never been able to play and sing at the same time but if I practised from now to judgement day I know I could never play like that, totally inspired. RIP a great lady
Geez! How she sings over what she was playing, I'll never know! I love the way she smiled softly in this performance. She was such a beautiful, one-of-a-kind artist. We will never have another. RIP Nina, you are not forgotten.
The wonderful thing about Simone was that no performance was the other alike. Even though the song was the same, it didn't really feel like it was. RIP Nina Simone.
BEYOND AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had never in my life heard a person playing the piano like her!!! She is wonderful and her voice can break my heart and cheer me up all at the same time.
Jazz is just the best. To think i've played in punk bands for 20 years when i should have been learning the piano and working out how to get down with it!
Hey, Nina wears a watch to an evening dress! : ) What does she need a watch for?
But anyway, I usually don't like to hear versions of songs I like in other concepts, but THAT suits the song as good as this swing in the official version. She made a new great piece out of it on this... Bösendorfer? Why not Steinway or something like this?
Yeah bosendorfer (can't do the weird o) is pretty darn good. In most cases though, nothing beats a Steinway but some venues don't have that because it costs around 26467785341769485883425736732 $ or something like that. So they get the second (or third) best.
: D Thank you so much for this comprehensive information. The next time someone asks me how much a Bösendorfer is, I'll say: two six four six seven seven (...) dollars- or something like that. : )
The "Bösendorfer Imperial" (it's an extra large model, an I am quite sure this one is an Imperial, too) will often be the choice for very large concert halls. There may be different preferences, but it is not "second best".
Man, this playing isn't good. She's dropping notes like a banker with a hole in his pockets.
Now Nina is great when she gets it right but she has been notoriuos through her career for not always doing so....that's part of the thrill of seeing her live. But lets keep our heads on here. The playing on this is pretty awful in places. I invite you to listen to any professional pianist if you doubt me.
Man you don't understand what jazz and blues is, as well as the improvisation. This isn't an academic style of playing but emotive and live. Listen to the music not the notes.
Listen kid, I've heard Oscar Peterson play jazz and Django Reinhardt too. I know as well as anybody what the difference is between improv and mistakes.
If you can't hear the mistakes in this playing, then you're hero worship of Nina is stopping your ears up. Because I assure you, she's makin mistakes bro, not improvising. Mistakes are mistakes. There's nothing ''accademic'' about bad timing and hitting the wrong notes in a scale. It's called a mistake no matter what your name is.
I've heard enough live jazz and blues to speak and to be sure what am i talking about. Mistakes are mistakes that's for sure. She's making 'em, yes. But this doesn't mean anything for me. This is my reply was about, kid.
@cleverfeller first of, let come clean, i do worship Nina! but i'm curious what do you call mistakes? i mean to call something a mistake you must have a reference, something that you would call "correct". and in my humble opinion, i think that whatever Nina does or did, was the reference that we should measure with! so that would make what she plays however she plays it, CORRECT! and anyway, it pleases me
@Manyakhin You can hear some from 4:23-4:32... but it's no big deal. Her timing goes off for moments during the performance, but so what. I've never heard someone play something so technical, while singing, and not have subtle mistakes here and there.
@cleverfeller Miles Davis said if you're not making mistakes, you're not trying hard enough. I think she is improvising here and taking chances. The result is pleasing, obviously, to a lot of people, so its a success. Not that any of this means anything to someone like you.
@ponarona You don't need to be in a band period. I always said I was in a band, but we were just drunks singing about how much we love this guy perry.
And I do believe it is mostly incredibly complex improvisation. It is also in a much more difficult key than the original-- Ab instead of A, and yet she breezes through it with metronome timing. Her musical ability was astounding, though she didn't always show it off. Simply breathtaking.
I think this is the performance where Nina shows off the extent of her prowess with the piano out of all those I've seen (and I've seen a lot!).
Her technique is simply astounding-- this is such a complex piano part she has elaborated from a relatively simple song. The big chords at the end end are astounding-- so dramatic, and the speed is relentless. She is a concert standard pianist.
Each time one listens to this piece of music, you can only be overwhelmed by the sheer talent of Nina. Quite apart from the raw honest vocal emotion...her talent with the piano is still heart stopping after all these years..
I saw Nina in London one night and there was a heckler calling out to her that she was ''really terrible'' ....'' no, honestly'' he said, '' You are really awful''.
I couldn't believe it. He just didn't get her at all. Now nobody is forced to like somebody but he was trying to spoil the whole night for all of us.
'' No, I'm not joking'' he said, '' you really are terrible.''
Now, I must confess it makes me laugh to remember it.
Fritz Pauer, a great pianist and musician himself, first showed me this piece of incredible art. Since then I have to listen to it again and again and ....It's just incredible what she does and how she did it. THANKS FOR POSTING THIS !!!!
I think that meany great composers are not able to write a pianosolo like that, I think that meany pianists/singers are not able to play/sing this. Even when they practice a year on it. And she, she does all those tings in an improvisiation on an unbelivibale way. Just unbelievable

Each time one listens to this piece of music, you can only be overwhelmed by the sheer talent of Nina. Quite apart from the raw honest vocal emotion...her talent with the piano is still heart stopping after all these years..

A "standing ovation" performance by a musical legend but the audience remain seated and legs crossed. Sometimes humanity baffles me

you know what I thought the same thing when I first saw this clip...maybe they were in shock...it was so brilliant. I wish I had been there though.

I've seen Tori Amos in concert, but I'd give up that ticket and a thousand more to go back in time and see Nina Simone.

@HeroinForever

I think that meany great composers are not able to write a pianosolo like that, I think that meany pianists/singers are not able to play/sing this. Even when they practice a year on it. And she, she does all those tings in an improvisiation on an unbelivibale way. Just unbelievable
