  • whenever i see/hear tracy i remember the smash hits competition that got her singing with them.....

  • I used to get my newspapper off her every morning - then she won the competiton and was gone

  • Just so good

  • Wouldnt you just love Weller as a mate!

  • @MrBrummieGaz I couldnt think of anything better.. Are you really Jim'll Fix It, in disguise...I wrote to him when I was young, to meet Mr Weller, must of got lost in the post....

  • Brilliant. Thanks for the lovely post.

  • Their voices really mesh don't they? Effortless harmonizing @ 1:08.

  • Pure class. What a voice Paul had.Dont make em like that anymore!

  • Love love love it :)

  • tracie has a show on southend radio now

  • watever happened to tracey/..she had 1 hit, the house that jack built....

  • were Paul and Tracie ever an item, they make a nice couple

  • @nwlman .. are you kidding? The body language between them don't look very positive.

  • Mick's organ is underplayed...

  • @rangers1170 fnarr-fnarr :P

  • @rangers1170 ... it were a Mick's up i think. ;)

  • they are just brilliant... always bring out the fond memory of the 80's

  • It's all coming back to me now........... Opps its gone again

  • Speak Like A Child - Live! A young Weller belt's out the truth and Mick's keybord's rock softly to this as Tracey sinf's with Paul. It is a little weak this but you have to respect it's direction, truth and feel............

  • oops wrong song, looking for Herbie!!!

  • @Mamasan41 HA!!! Check out Tim Hardins "Tim Hardin 2" from a year before (67') The HEADhunters similarly titled tune! I think he actually got some type of writers credit for this or some other Council classic.

  • One of my all time greats, man is exceptional , met him when he was with SC, true gent and very appreciative of his fans. Thanks for posting mate....

  • What happened to young Tracie...she was awlright....is she still kickin around...?

  • @dodgysparks She's a radio Dj/Presenter now ;)

  • he couldn't sing for toffee before this! They became credible after this!

  • @nicolarichardson1 I think afew Jam fans might have something to say about that!

  • Yes and lost the plot. The SC were always a very average band unless they stayed within the northern soul big brass sound - shout top the top, solid bond, walls come tumbling down. changing moods etc Nothing the Jam couldn't have done with more panache and "Style" this attempt to tune into the youth of the eighties backfired badly..how long did respond last till it went under 2 years 3 how many hits....all from Tracie nuff said.

  • @jenkcam It's important to not ignore the fact that people move on, evolve, change. Paul Weller was, it seems, through working with the Jam and wanted to do something else. Working relationships can be difficult to maintain, especially within a creative, personal context. Imagine dealing with some of your co-workers for several years - it can become dismal.

Not every SC song is great but a lot are very good, and thats much more than most, especially for someone his age.

  • WHAT the ?... this isn`t herbie hancock!! :P

  • The bass is total class.

  • What a time to have lived - Weller split The Jam and I heard him on Kid Jenson saying he had no other material - the next thing I know I am up in Paddington watching something called a 'video jukebox' putting lots of 50p pieces and with me mates and playing the video to this to death - Brilliant

  • class ..enough said ....

  • fucking blinding!

    Cheers

  • i'm a big weller fan and this is one of the style councils best, but they wouldn't be able to release this today as the pc lot would say it promotes peadaphilia

  • @TheRatChaser HAHAHAHA!!! My thoughts exactly!!

  • the mike shadow on wellers shirt is dancing!

  • Muito bom

  • complete class love it

  • Got a look of Ian Curtis here!

  • Love this song. The girl is called Tracie and she won a Smash Hits competition to sing with them. She also a two hits in her own right make the top 40.

  • whose the chick there??

  • perfect song. love this live sound.

this is quality art in the form of music.

  • Damn I am digging this version waaayyy more than the studio one due to that sick ass bass and of course Tracie looking all drugged up as she did.

  • I like the way he looks angry when singing, even though it's not an angry song.

  • Classic! Thanks for posting!

  • such a good song!

  • I Remember This one. Good Stuff.

  • Oh, boy. This is simply P-E-R-F-E-C-T

  • The b side to this was a million times better. Should've released that instead Paul.

  • Weller wa actually born in Surrey England, a long way from Belsen methinks!!!!!

  • Weller was born in surrey England, a long way from Belsen methinks!

  • fuxake weller looks like a Belsen victim

  • He was born in Belsen, whats so funny?

  • Still freakin great stuff. Timeless.

  • dunville park 1981,,,belfast,,,sean says hi bonanza...tudor janty and all the wee mods punks dirty glue sniffers

  • @kellycoleclan hi owen ,i wonder are you related to michelle kelly ,bapper,of ross rd now,i used to go out with her mate denise s..if not,,,it was fun,,best of luck m8

  • forgot all the modettes you were lovely...im sure your all fat and ugly now....lol

  • Wasn't Tracie only 17yrs or 18 yrs old here? Why does she look older than Paul?

  • Lefty singers are very adept at using music to engineer the ideas of young people to the extent of brainwashing.

(Did you know, that in so-called 'hymn practice' at school, we kids were made to sing Bob Dylan and Ralph McTell songs in the 80s?!)

Is this why Labour MPs are so keen to fund special recording studios with public money?

Let's hear behind the scenes of a session with my own Labour MP Johnathan Leftwinger!

Paste title into bar: LEFT WING RECORD MAKERS AND HEART BREAKERS!

  • The band behind Paul on this were a protegee band of his called The Questions. They had one minor hit, but otherwise never really broke through.

  • @TheDustpile You need help man. This is music and you're ranting about left versus right. Are you in a sticky divorce case by any chance? You sound like it..

  • TSC Weller's greatest and oh Jam fans ppl move on but some didn't :)

  • good tune now, willed myself to like this.

  • The bass player looks about 15!! Great song, all the same.

  • DAVID

  • Thanks for the post thecatkeaton. What a great live performance. Tight. And ShirleyAnne, I'll look for The Complete Adventures of The Style Council. All should!

  • first and still the best ..weller youre a fkn genius..

  • Christ, Weller was a cool fucker - still is.

    National treasure

  • The STyle COuncil KICK ASS on The Jam. They are FABULOUS!

  • I thought the Style Council were ok but didn't forgive Weller for years for splitting up The Jam

  • Me to and years later he did the same to Mick Talbot of the council.

  • Could have sworn he was singing "Speak like a hedgehog" when I was at school.

  • Fantastic.

  • Matches his haircut at the time too.

  • fucking love this

  • you've summed it up brilliantly :))))

  • Hmmmm...Tracie Young, had pics of her all over my bedroom wall...:)

  • I'd stay back from all the Tracies... they're nothing but bother!!!! :D

  • Yeah, especially if they've been on the Creamola foam!!!!!

  • Yip you know what they say... never mix a Tracie with a creamola foam... its just asking for bother!!! :)

  • I love the sound of the Aria sb bass real funky

  • What a man, what a band, what a song absolute TRUE LEGEND.

  • Comment removed

  • I think Weller is a bit uncool without his guitar but hes good singer and song is nice

  • mick talbot

  • It's all in the keyboards...who is the keyboard player?

  • Keyborads was Mick Talbot as I remeber

  • Mick Talbot rules....I can't make out the lyrics, his accent is too extreme...presently trying to learn how to play this tune...then I will get all the chicks...

  • what a debonaire and dynamic show.awesome...

  • Class. Was just as awesome in concert last year.

  • Rocked the roof in Boston.

  • i didnt realise he toured in america nevermind was popular.

  • Tracie now works as a radio DJ for southend radio in Essex

  • Wow! I spent more money shipping Council recordings to the states from london then they actually cost!!! I absolutely LOVE Paul. Anyone can direct me to complete lyrics?

  • My Style Councils were all imports too. Yikes! But worth the price because I still listen to them. There are so many Weller fans out in the Internet hinterlands and Paul is known for his aversion to computerization so he probably doesn't even know about all these ardent fans of his, 'tis a shame, don't you think? I got The Complete Adventures of The Style Council and it has all the lyrics, and a 112 page booklet. Very cool..

  • enjoy love x

  • Has anyone responded to you on this? You can use the google search and it will show you all the lyrics to his songs.

  • paul weller was 23 here he had just split the jam . what a fucking talent

  • @THEGGTV - And the best thing he ever did!!! The Style were a great talent, but none other than Paul Weller the man, himelf!! =D

  • Comment removed

  • I hear this and I'm 15 again :(

  • is that paul weller?

    cool shit man!

  • So ahead of his years.

Thin sound of the keyboards & bass are a shame, but all in all a hint of greatness that was to follow.

  • is that the picture sleeve for the Questions "Price You Pay" single in the background and one of the Barry twins on the bass?

  • We'll never see his like again

  • Just brought out another album.

  • Tracie was awesome just wish I could find a copy of her lp somewhere. The is my fave Style Council song. It reminds me of my girl.

  • I believe it's Whiteys brother.

  • this was weller x mrs before dclee

  • the lovely Tracie, wot a babe. She was great, I wonder who the bloke next to her is though. Maybe he should have done a few records himself.

  • Is that Whitey on drums?

  • The way he holds the mike stand - obviously missing his guitar!

  • Was this performance ever released on VHS or DVD? I also wondered if there were videos of artists on Weller's Respond Records, especially the Questions. Good Stuff, Post some more!!!

  • last i heard she was working as a dj on a local radio station cant remember the name of it though

  • Type Tracie Young into Wikipedia to find out about her

  • great song one of there best what ever happened to Tracie.

  • Paul and Tracie, two great tastes that taste great together. This made my day...

and tom581, if you think Tracie looks like a fella, check out any of Annie Lennox' vids from this time period. Now THAT'S a fella...

  • doesnt paul look like rodney trotter

  • This is such a great performance, good to see Weller finally chilling out after that "spokesman of a generation" rubbish with The Jam. And who's the fella with the mullet??

  • Sheer perfection!!!!

  • i've been looking for this for ages. cheers for posting it
