  • This man was leading RSA to a first world..m still totaly sad he resign. His mannerism, speech delivery is of high intellegent. Each man has his floor, Mbeki had high pontential. Zuma is just appauling, a joke and populist. nothing else. Mbeki may not been perfect who else did our nation have??? I Hate politic...

  • We thank you Mbeki for your leadership. No government is perfect and yes you had your flaws but you did much for our international image and position within world economics. You allowed the world to see that African leaders can be statesmen. Well done, we wish you well and may you remain active in our country - we need you.

  • Khaya you should be the next leader of ANC.

  • that's stupid

  • Shame on Mbeki, but even more shame on Jay Z (Jacob Zuma)

  • You have done your best as a president of south africa Mr Mbeki, being a president of a multi-cultural nation is not easy,so,go with your head held high. You are an icon to many africans. You hav lead by example, and your resignation should be axamplary to african leaders, who always cling to power even if it's time to go.

  • ok No offence to Zuma and Mbeki, Mbeki is bad, But Zuma is even worse!!!!!!! Madiba was the best! whats gonna happen to our country!

  • cory shut the hell up

  • that you for every thing tata mbeki...you have done good for this country and africa..I respect you sir and you would always be my president...enkosi tata

  • Hy verdien om sy gat geskop te kry. REVERS APARTHEID, AIDS MISDAAD en ZIM - Cheers Thabo

  • Well if beer is stale...... Prez Mbeki has done the most honourable thing we need to respect the man no matter his shortcomings in office, too bad his counterpart to the north does not agree. He's among a rare breed of leaders in Africa.good luck

  • who the fuck is shouting like that?

  • If Zuma = Mugabe, then why was it Mbeki who supported "quiet diplomacy" with Mugabe while Zuma's trade unionist allies allied themselves with the labour-based opposition MDC in Zimbabwe? There is no fondness between Zuma and Mugabe. There is nothing to indicate Zuma will imitate Mugabe.

  • Mbeki never denied hiv caused aids you muppets. Stop repeating this ridiculous lie.

  • So is SA now going for the Populist? Would be sad.

  • I mean Zuma.. Just to be clear.

  • They just want zuma in

so sa can become like zim

  • I know Mbeki was not the best (but who could ever fill Mandela's shoes?) but he has done a lot for us South Africans regardless of race. Zuma has been investigated for corruption as well as rape and all of those charges have been swept under the carpet and forgotten about. Oversees that would be a national disgrace but here the ANC/ANCYL applauded him as a hero and SA's new saviour. Life in SA is hard enough with barely able to afford food, education & healthcare. The whole gov is just corrupt

  • People are too pessimistic concerning Jacob Zuma, he has a good history and yes he was investigated on charges of rape and corruption, but was convicted of neither. Who cares how that would be reacted to overseas, South Africans and Africans as a whole need to stop holding ourselves to Foreign standards because our needs are different, Europe has its own problems as we have uniquely south African problems to deal with. I thing JZ is perfect to adress poverty in SA which is a HUGE problem.

  • Only problem is we need foreign investment. More people in SA on disability grants than registered tax payers. We are also not producing much, selling all our platinum and minerals as raw products and buying the value added products back from foreign countries. I'm working in public health sector for 9 years and have seen things steadily getting worse. Not being pessimistic...doing my bit, but we need to keep the Asian and European countries happy!

  • Will Jacob Zuma address the U.N. soon??

  • he decided not go. he has to sort out the transition.

  • Looks Like SA is about to be F in the A soon!

  • mole646,

I haven't "seen" you in a while mole. Good to read from you again.

We should wish SA the best. There are millions there trying give it a "good go".

I'm still trying understand how Mbeki could lose to Zuma. Mbeki has a Master's in Economics from University of Sussex. The few speeches I've viewed by him are very good.

Parlimentary system is very different than USA......

If I lived in SA, I'd vote for Dr.Mangosuthu Buthelezi MP.

Perhaps Zuma will shake Mugabe a bit

  • Hows it going Wolf? I've been busy with the latest addition to the family, and school!

  • thanks for sharing this, cos' obviously we can't get this over here, but I'd really like to hear your commentry on what happened!

  • "Live from Tshwane"

Tshwane is the new name for Pretoria. Correct?

Will Cape Town be renamed "Joe Slovo City"?

  • I think Cape Town will remain Cape Town. It's the first I hear of this Joe Slovo City.

Indeed, that's the new name for Pretoria.

  • Would that be such a bad thing, Joe Slovo was a hero.

  • cory777,

I have much pity for you, because you seem saturated with negitivity. That will eventually take a toll upon your physical health.

Have you been to Japan?? Do you know and Japanese citizens? Is Japan's view of "black african" immigration any different that the Japanese collective view on immigration of ANY non-Japanese?

Japan's population is shrinking, thus, in the future, either the birthrate must increase, immigration must increase,..or entitlements must be reformed..

  • It was indeed a sad day. However better days await SA. Some times we need to press the brakes before accelerating.

  • After dropping the ball so horribly on AIDS - and remember this cost the lives of THOUSANDS of people... thousands of people he indirectly KILLED - I have no sympathy for him whatsoever. This is long overdue. Now that he is out of office, he is open to criminal prosecution and anyone with a family member who dies from lack of availability of ARVs would have a pretty good case against him.

  • ohhhh my....so i suppose zuma takes over now? what chaos awaits south africa? this is certainly a terrible time to hope for a better future, because as we can see and know, the future is pretty dark, and almost hopeless.

  • Thabo has just shown that he has no balls.

Since the ANC leadership fight, the NEC has wanted him gone and they want Zuma in the seat as fast as they can possibly put him there, so he can begin fucking up South Africa that much sooner.

The arms deal I doubt he had much involved in. We know Zuma did because one of his key advisors went to jail for it, which is why he was fired in 2005.

  • I've read that television was not permitted in South Africa until 1975. Is this true??

  • Yes, unbelievably. But broadcasts into South Africa from Rhodesia began in the early 1960s.

  • yeah television came in 1976.

  • I heard about this. Best of luck in your country. You're in for some politically unstable times.

  • The President of South Africa ? So this all came to be because of one guy ... Judge Chris Nicholson ? I don't understand how that happens.

I also heard Thabo Mbeki stepped down to protect ANC President Jacob Zuma - Could you explain that ?

  • this does seem like one of the best speeches he has ever done! I wish he had done this more often in the past.

  • Why a sad day? He's been more or less controversial all along non? I remember frustration over him not taking HIV as a serious problem.

  • Who is in charge now and will there b new elections soon ?

  • there will be elections in 7 months. he will be presidident until all constitutional requrements have been met. the speaker will take over.

  • Now Zuma will be president :(

As an outsider i'd say that is not a good thing

  • I agree. Jacob Zuma kinda smells like Mugabe from here.

  • Sorry Khaya, but I'm entirely ignorant of the situation and Mr. Mbeki.

Why is it he resigned, and was he a good president?

  • I'll make a video commentary about this tomorrow, it's 1:35 am here. lol.

  • good riddance, he should have fu%^$% off long time ago. but now we get zuma, who has no formal school training. he learned to write and read in jail.

  • corry777,

Setting Zuma aside for a moment. There are many people who are "self educated" in USA, having arrived in this nation with nothing but dreams and desire. I personally know two people who came to USA with NOTHING, NO FORMAL EDUCATION and they are now far more prosperous that MOST Americans.

When speaking to them, you would never have guessed that they have no "formal education".

Formal education does NOT equal intelligence

IQ. You either have it, or you don't..

  • Agreed. A leader does not necessarily need to have a 'formal' education to be able to lead a nation. A good leader displays charisma, the power and responsibility to bring about change. However, when it comes to running a state, and when it gets down to 'administrative' tasks like representing a country at the World Economic Forum, here we need education. Leadership is separate to the ability to govern. A country needs both.

  • Khaya, I want your commentary on this news!

  • will do so tomorrow :-)

  • whoa...
