I have to agree - Viet nam and Soviet Afghanistan are not good comparisons. US involvement started low then went to 500,000 while the Soviets started with about 90,000 and I don't think they ever broke 110,000. Also Afghanistan has like 5 times the area of Viet Nam. The Soviet economy was on the rocks which is why they could not increase the commitment needed to subdue the place.

Afghan strentght was about 40,000 at 1983, later 250 000(1986).
