Florence said he was difficult on set also. That is not demeaning a dead man, just telling it like it is. He should have realized it was just a Friday-nite kid's show, not Shakespeare. When you are lucky enough to get a network show, it would be well to not keep the cast, crew--and people footing the bills--waiting while you work off your temper tantrum. As for the gay thing, there were NO open actors or performers in those days, including Liberace and Paul Lynde.

@wesinalabama It wasn't just the fact that Robert Reed got uncomfortable during love scenes with Florence Henderson on account of his sexual orientation,but he was a trained actor.Kudos to him for keeping that under wraps until the day he died.There's no way he'd have been able to do that in this day and age.

After watching a couple interviews with Sherwood Schwartz regarding Robert Reed's behavior, I can't help but feel sorry for Reed. I think it is horrible of Schwartz to continue to belittle Reed even in his death. Why speak ill of the dead? So what if he would walk off the screens and have fits regarding the script! It only made the show better. Schwartz made it seem like he was a burden to the other cast members, yet I read elsewhere that they genuinely cared for him.

because what you base your opinions of gays on are what you see on television. i used to think the same way but after meeting MANY gay people i know that is a huge stereotype. It only takes ONE flamboyant gay guy to give gay people a "bad"name and to make people think that's how ALL gay guys act. I've learned that can't be any further from the truth.

I dont care if he was gay in real life. This show would not be what it is w/o him. He is the ideal father and husband. Although he and sherwood argued often, it was good for the show. Robert Reed died in 1992 at age 59 in Pasadena, California, from bladder cancer; he was suffering from complications of AIDS at the time. He is buried in Skokie, Illinois.

I don't think The Brady Bunch really pushed Robert Reed. The plots were pretty simple largely based on seemingly endless growing pains. I always marveled at the way the whole family would appear as if by magic. Try getting kids to do that in the real world.

Beautiful! I've thought about how tortured he must have been, living in a time where what he was was viewed as 'deviance'. I wish he had lived to see today: can't you just picture him having fun on a "Will and Grace" guest spot? He deserved that. Such a damn brilliant actor, too. He hated, and loved, Brady Bunch. I think he wanted it to be real, but then appreciated the escapism it had become - for millions, and for himself. He was my TV Dad. Love and miss him. Very nice job.
