Florence said he was difficult on set also. That is not demeaning a dead man, just telling it like it is. He should have realized it was just a Friday-nite kid's show, not Shakespeare. When you are lucky enough to get a network show, it would be well to not keep the cast, crew--and people footing the bills--waiting while you work off your temper tantrum. As for the gay thing, there were NO open actors or performers in those days, including Liberace and Paul Lynde.
@wesinalabama It wasn't just the fact that Robert Reed got uncomfortable during love scenes with Florence Henderson on account of his sexual orientation, but he was a trained actor.Kudos to him for keeping that under wraps until the day he died. There's no way he'd have been able to do that in this day and age.
After watching a couple interviews with Sherwood Schwartz regarding Robert Reed's behavior, I can't help but feel sorry for Reed. I think it is horrible of Schwartz to continue to belittle Reed even in his death. Why speak ill of the dead? So what if he would walk off the screens and have fits regarding the script! It only made the show better. Schwartz made it seem like he was a burden to the other cast members, yet I read elsewhere that they genuinely cared for him.
because what you base your opinions of gays on are what you see on television. i used to think the same way but after meeting MANY gay people i know that is a huge stereotype. It only takes ONE flamboyant gay guy to give gay people a "bad"name and to make people think that's how ALL gay guys act. I've learned that can't be any further from the truth.
He was a handsome man and very talented. I don't understand why he audtioned for the role of Mike or why he accepted it if he thought it was below him? Too bad he was gay, sure would have left some handsome sons behind.
@sloopdanb You don;t know how RR was in real life. Maybe he is acting straight to survive in a heterocentric world. Anytime someone tells you that you have to conform to some arbitrary norm, that's the time to fight.
Did his former Co-Stars from "The Brady Bunch", "The Brady Bunch Hour", "The Bradys", "The Brady Brides", "The Brady Girls Get Married", and "A Very Brady Christmas" go to the funeral? R.I.P. Robert Reed. I'll always remember you as Mike Brady.
I dont care if he was gay in real life. This show would not be what it is w/o him. He is the ideal father and husband. Although he and sherwood argued often, it was good for the show. Does a character like Mike Brady actually exist? If he does, that's one lucky family and lady. I love this character.
Oh come on. It was the 70's. Had I been an actor at that time, I would not have wanted the public to know that I was gay. It was not accepted then. We still have a long way to go
The world suffered a great loss when Robert Reed died. But he is in Heaven now and we shall meet with him again one day when we too have passed above the stars.
Killer,,when one's immune system is compromised it is very easy to have cancer and many other deseases.Know one dies of AIDS, but yet the deseases that come when the immune system is nearly gone. Complications of AIDS.
seriously? people can have more than one medical condition at the same time. I'm guessing that the HIV came first, and then the cancer, and that fighting the cancer was more difficult due to the HIV.
Cool dude, they didnt know about Aids too much back then. But now while everyone knows a lot about it there shouldnt be an excuse.. Horrible disease yo
This is a very good Tribute to Robert Reed as well as a very good follow-up on his most famous role as TV's and Stevie's(That is Yours Truly's) favorite TV Dad of Mike Brady.
Robert Reed died in 1992 at age 59 in Pasadena, California, from bladder cancer; he was suffering from complications of AIDS at the time. He is buried in Skokie, Illinois.
yomamadontdanz stop & just think before you speak. Robert had more love & respect for his on screen children (Barry, Maureen, Eve, Chris, Mike & Susan) then anyone will ever know.
Please let the man rest in peace & just leave him alone. Robert was the most kindest & gentlest of human beings & to hear you or anyone else speak ill of him just makes me want to ring your F@#$%^ LIL NECK!
@Witchboy1962 Wise words, I'll never forget Mr. Reed. He was a very handsome man, one of the most handsome actors in all times. He is a treasure for my memory for ever.
nice tribute i grew up with the brady bunch as a kid im now 48 its seems like yesterday and i never forget the show robert reed was a fine actor and performer and was a tribute to the family man thaks
skmstr, you are an ignorant ass...Robert Reed was a fine actor..and he died too young..he brought joy to a lot of people over the years as Mike Brady..you wish you had that much talent, you retarded motherfucker..
I don't think The Brady Bunch really pushed Robert Reed. The plots were pretty simple largely based on seemingly endless growing pains. I always marveled at the way the whole family would appear as if by magic. Try getting kids to do that in the real world.
'Mike Brady' is the undisputed KING of TV dads, but Robert Reed was even greater. Not many people know that he served as a father figure to the 'Brady' kids in real life, in an effort to help them avoid the terrible pitfalls that so many child actors go through when growing up.
Wish you were still with us, Robert. We'll always love ya!
Beautiful! I've thought about how tortured he must have been, living in a time where what he was was viewed as 'deviance'. I wish he had lived to see today: can't you just picture him having fun on a "Will and Grace" guest spot? He deserved that. Such a damn brilliant actor, too. He hated, and loved, Brady Bunch. I think he wanted it to be real, but then appreciated the escapism it had become - for millions, and for himself. He was my TV Dad. Love and miss him. Very nice job.
R.I.P Robert :( We all love you!

@wesinalabama, well, if he was difficult on the set it was because he was an accomplished dramatic actor and found it hard to do a sitcom.

The Brady Bunch dad may have lived an alternative lifestyle, but hey; at least he stuck it out for the kids.
