I think weed is psychologicly addictive meaning you will think about it alot if you stop but not physicaly suffre like stopping opiates. Physicaly addictive drugs including alcohol can have terrible withdrawls and in some cases like with valium and alcohol can kill. So it depends what kind of addiction your speeking of. The only reason weed is a gateway drug is because it's illegal. It introduces you to the underground world of the drug market, and your dealer is likely to be able to hook you up with something stronger. This wouldn't be the case if it were legalized, so it's really a moot point.
