There was an album released on Columbia records called "the first great festivals of the seventies" it was a 3 record set of cuts from Isle of Wight and the Atlanta pop festival... It had the Allman brothers on it performing "Statesboro blues" and was the best I ever heard them. It also had amongst others a blistering version of "Grand Junction" by Poco. If you ever see it BUY IT.... it was a great 3record set!
I live in Phoenix where they have a music museum, and they have live performances sometimes. They should have an exhibit and live show of every performer playing the slide...it's an awesome sound.
@Electrica990 Yeah I'm an old f*** at 64 and saw the original band 67 times over a two year period. Duane Allman was the ONLY slide player in the band. That is Dickey Betts playing the first solo as a lead guitar.
When I first saw them Duane played a Les Paul Goldtop and Dickey had a Fender Strat. Then Duane got a brown looking Les Paul and Dickey had a Gibson SG. Dickey then gave the SG to Duane for a slide guitar and got a Les Paul himself. Dickey went through about four different Les Paul's
@Electrica990 between late 1970 and 1974 with the last one being a sunburst with zebra pickups. He also got another SG for slide after Duane died then he got a real bright and pretty Les Paul sunburst for slide. In 1975 Dickey began using his famous Goldie Goldtop Les Paul which was his main guitar until 1994. I noticed between 1980 and 85 Dickey also would use an Ibenez electrick guitar. In 94 Betts switched to Paul Reed Smith then a red Gibson ES-335 & by 97 he used two Fender Strats thru 2000
@Electrica990 I noticed in 2000 Dickey still used the Strats but also would play a red Les Paul half the time which turned out to be Goldie. It sat in the Rock N Roll hall of fame for several years and turned an ugly green so Dickey painted it red. Dickey was kicked out of the ABB in 2000 & in 2001 began using special signiture Les Paul's made for him by Gibson. I think there are about 5 of them. A couple of Goldtops, a red one, a sun burst, a brown one and one which has some very dark brown.
I wish I could say that I was around and young when this was made but I wasnt. However through my father I am now an have been for at least 20 years been a lover of this music. I tell my dad all the time, for the money, Yalls music is so much better than my generations will ever be. Love the Allman brothers . Love them so much. Just straight up jamming.
no dickey just played regular electric you can tell because duane slide tones are very recanazible and so is dickeys tone. Also dickey did'nt play slide on the electric guitar into after duanes death you can hear this in ain't wastin time no more and poney boy.
I agree--------Allmans at the Fillmore is the best live recording ever...and my guy is usually Hendrix.(I see you're mostly musicians so: musician also)
Really cool after the guitar break when the bass player comes in at 3:18 it seems like a train wreck & hes right back on at 3:23.Don't know if that was planned or not-but its cool.
I don't think it works that way. It may have been Duane's answer to Led Zep. But, I'm sure the country didn't contract the band out to specifically battle against England.
I hear you. Besides, it's best not to battle with the giants. That is, unless you are David. Still, one shouldn't rely on miracles. Don't outspend the competition; outthink them. Best business advice I ever read from a magazine. Peace!
When I was a kid it was the best, I just listened to all these Gods and dreamed of being them. Now I'm older and like everyone else, I'm full of opinions and speculations about whose who. Ugh.
God why did you go and leave us with the innane crap that goes for music these days after having blessed us with such fine examples of music such as these dear departed former Allman Bothers?
They're in storage, but when I get 'em out I'll probably post 'em on my Myspace site. It's gonna be awhile though so be patient! I took most of the shots of Johnny that night, but I got one of Duane and one of Berry as well.
This, along with the live "Crossroads" by Cream on the album "Wheels of Fire" - are the best live recordings EVER !! These recordings captured both bands at their very best - and, were both recorded and engineered by the late, great Tom Dowd ! I have been listening to this song since 1972 - and it still amazes me to this day !
Tom Dowd invited me down to Criteria Studios in Miami one night in April 1990 to sit in on a session with The Allman Brothers for the Seven Turns CD. I got to watch them lay down "Good Clean Fun" and "Gambler's Roll". He invited me back a second night to watch Warren Haynes lay down the lead part for "Gambler's Roll". It was an amazing two nights to say the least! I'll never forget the experience. God Bless you Tom, I love and miss you greatly. There will never be another like him...
I saw thm at the Fillmore East on 3/12/71 the wekend they did that amazing live album and opened for the mighty Johnny Winter. Still have the color slides I took that night. Whatta show!
lived in Maconga for awhile.Duane is much loved.Gregg is reviled as a snitch.

Also Greg, very underrated as a blues singer. He deserves more respect. Plus he was also a player, not a frontman.

With all due respect, were the Allman Brothers America's answer to Led Zeppelin? Due to the 32,298 views, the answer seems to be yes.
