@EricTheCarGuy Hi, I have a 2006 Expedition King Ranch that just shut of while driving 2 times already , real scary, with kids in the car. I watched your video, I will probable give it a try.I know Auto-Zone does free engine light check, but my engine light it is not on, so what do I check for? You think is something I could fix, something easy? Thanks in advance
@poop4256 Short the grey connector located under the passenger carpet below the glovebox, turn the key on and count the flashes you can then take that code and put it into the search box on the homepage of my website to find out what the code is for.
@EricTheCarGuy hey eric can you please help i have a nissan micra and the check engine light does not work but all the other lights work checked all the fuses and relays everthing seems ok. i dont understand why the check engine light does not work as i cant start the car.
@karlakatie2215 There is no Automotive tool that will give you handouts on exactly what part to replace or how to fix a car. There is no substitute for automotive mechanics training, experience and knowledge. Reading a code is just the tip of the iceberg. You need to look deeper into the freeze frame, live data monitoring and recording to be able to make a through diagnosis.
Did you hear that boys & girls, it does not diagnose. The reason why code readers came about was for the consumer to read and erase codes, not necessarily fix the problem. Parts stores may provide this service but cannot erase the code(s) without repairing the root cause. To comprehend a data stream you need years of knowledge. If you think, a $60.00 item will tell you what part to replace you might as well as have a doctor diagnose your health problem(s) using WebMD.
Hi there!.. because you replied my question REALLY quickly I felt like asking one more.. haha. Actually is more like a suggestion. I decided to get a real scanner (after using a KIWI for a while).I've been reading reviews and looking around and it's hard to understand the differences. I noticed some give you error codes, others add live info and/or recorded info, ABS Info? do all read all sensors? It would be awesome if you could put this in a video.. how to buy an OBD scanner. THANKS! Nico
@sazunike Actually if you watch the tool show videos that I'm posting starting today I talk to the people that sell the scanners about that very thing, you might want to check those out.
@EricTheCarGuy Thanks!.. Now that I've seen that Pegisys thingy, my new scanner looks like a 1989 gameboy! What i can do is sell my Motorcycle to pay for the scanner I want to have the next time I get a CEL :) ... or maybe I'll have to sell both my motorcycle AND my car to pay for it. That is a sexy scanner!
@sazunike Wait to see Wednesday's videos as I go back where they cover more affordable solutions, they have several different 'trim levels' that are much more affordable, there were some other tool makers that I interviewed that also had solutions that were more practical and affordable.
Hey eric love your vids man! I was wondering if you could make a vid on how to diagnose iac valve and throttle position sensor. Kind of an overview on some conditions that whould happen se and other sensors fail. Again love you vids keep em coming stay dirty
@rjhty TPS's hardly ever go bad but they are easy enough to check with a scan tool if you have one that reads a data list, as for the IAC I kind of covered that in Solving Honda Idle Problems but I agree that a video just on the IAC would be a good one. Thanks for the suggestion and comment.
@EricTheCarGuy o rite a no problem u might be able to help me i got a mercedes shes coming up with system to lean bank 1 and a secoundry air injection code also it idles high at times and low at times and wen u shift it in to drive it almost stalls biut then returns to normal idle have u ever seen anything like this
@THOLIM90 I don't think it's the sensor, it may be a vacuum leak or more likely a problem with the AIR system. If the O2 gets bad readings it will screw up the mixture when the engine is warm and performance issues and poor fuel economy will result.
@EricTheCarGuy ya i got an egr valve solinoid i want to check its a 2 pin solinoid what voltage would be safe to activate it would 12 volts be bit much
@EricTheCarGuy Hey eric love your vids man! I was wondering if you could make a vid on how to diagnose iac valve and throttle position sensor. Kind of an overview on some conditions that whould happen se and other sensors fail. Again love you vids keep em coming stay dirty

Had my mechanic check my engine light and tested it and said its not my 2 o2 sensors or the fuel enjectors. He did a tune up and throtle plate cleaning and re set the codes and i dont even see it come up no more.
I had Autozone check my engine light and the code read that he said, its either a O2 Sensor or Fuel Enjector. Fuel Enjectors for my ford is like 60$ a pop, so i cant afford to buy 4 at the same time, so how the heck would i know if its the fuel enjector and which one. Guess i take one out and put new one in and if no ligh comes on, guess that was the bad one.
hi.My check engine light is on...I want to pass the emission..I am running out of time...mine is 97 saab 900 se...Can I delete the codes and take it to emission test??...will it pass the emission??
eric, i have a 2001 dodge grand caravan with a code po135. words on scanner coming up fuel, catalayst,o2 hr. gas smells funny on the vehicle also. where can i start to look for this problem, thank you for your help.
@reddog9401 Normally heater codes are pretty straightforward and mean that the O2 needs to be replaced. I would replace the O2 and then clear the code and see if any problem still exists.
Dont mean to bother but i have a 97 jeep grand cherokee 4WD 5.2L I have been have problems with it not having any power it will not go past 50mph and revs very high and just recently got is scanned and got a codes that were. transmission failure solenoid 2 (or something like that) and also something about open and closed circut Im new to jeeps and any help would be greatly appreciated also i am planning on going back to auto store to get exact codes just hoping you can help until then
@MrAnt797 I hate to tell you this but I've put in my fair share of Jeep transmissions and it sounds like you might need one. Check the fluid and clear the codes, if the fluid is good and the codes don't come back you might be OK but I think you will find that you will need a trans in the end.
I accidentally linked a video response to "Check Engine Light Basics". I meant to write a post asking if you could help me out with my P0300 code, not link a near senseless video to your informative video. My bad.
If you have the time to look at it and provide some insight, I'd really appreciate it. If you don't have the time, that's cool too.
One suggestion, do remember to address the flashing check engine light while driving the vehicle. For what I understand, as I am not a mechanic that means a serious problem has been found. Not sure if this is true for all CEL's in all vehicles, but still a good point to make.
@tenchidbz That is part of the strategy it means that the computer has detected a condition that could potentially damage the engine such as a misfire. Great point, thanks for the comment.
Hello Eric ! I supose you must not remind me since you have sa many question but anyway i wanted to give you a little feedback... So the check engine light is off now :D you were righ , the 02 sensor was okay it was actually the connection that was bad.. Ended up buying the Spill-free funnel for the coolant bleeding but find myself using it lots of time its a great tool. And finally the head on the sidekick had way too much warpage ended up selling the parts. See ya Eric keep rocking !!!!
@KoolCordell Before OBDII each manufacturer had their own method of handling codes, you will need to research how to retrieve and interoperate codes for your particular vehicle.
@EricTheCarGuy the only one i could find is like 280 bucks then get some one on one of the gm forums to literally build a custom cable for it. surly there are other options. was GM the only company to use 1.5? (My car is a 1994 olds 88)
@KoolCordell How about a paperclip? Jump across the top 2 terminals on the connector (the only 2 with metal in them on the upper right) then turn the key to the "on" position and count the flashes of the check engine light. Do a google search on GM OBD1 codes to determine what the code stands for.
Hello Eric ! the check engine light just appeared in my 1994 toyota tercel 214 000 km , i've managed to get the code even if its OBD-I ( thank god toyota has the handy-dandy paper clip trick ) . anyway , it says Air-fuel ratio Lean malfunction . ive watched your video on O2 sensor but i would like to know which procedure do You follow when you have this trouble code what are the things to check/test Thanks a lot Eric ! Keep on Rocking !!
@qaz3000 First don't condemn the O2 straight away, what the code means is that it detects a lean condition it's not likely to be the result of a faulty sensor but some outside factor such as a vacuum leak or insufficient fuel. I would first look for vacuum leaks OR exhaust leaks before the sensor as this is the most likely cause of the code.
@EricTheCarGuy Thank you so much Eric , i was actuallly going to start by replacing the O2 xD , now that you talk about it i think that an exhaust leak could be the problem ( lots of noise ! but not more than usualy that's why i didn't think about it ) once again thanks for lightning my path toward home repair you rule !
@EricTheCarGuy So first of all i started by removing all the cardbord in front on the radiator cleaned the Egr valve which was semi-stuck put some jb weld on the manifold rust hole , threw a bunch of carburator cleaner everywhere , didn't noticed anykind of vacuum leak. Check engine light still on But now that i removed the Cardbord car doesn't reach normal operating temperature even after 20 min drive ?? radiator is in pretty good shape and i replaced the water pump and temp sensor any idea ??
@qaz3000 Well it sounds like you have multiple problems so take them one at a time. I would start with the engine temp issue perhaps by replacing the thermostat with an OE unit and bleeding the cooling system. Engine temp has a lot to do with how the engine runs. In my opinion it's not a good idea to put cardboard in front of the radiator as it does not allow airflow, this is a good thing with diesels in the winter but not with passenger cars.
I can't find a conector on my truck (2006 Mitsubishi Warrior Pick Up) I looked under the dash, behind the ashtray, in the glovebox and under the hood, where is it? My truck was bought new in the UK
@CanadianCharlie64 I'm not sure how it works in the UK but in the states it is mandated that it be mounted blow the drivers side of the dash, in your part of the world that might mean under the glovebox. I have found some behind the fuse box cover so you might want to check there also. It should not however be located under the hood.
eric, have you done any videos on abs, mine pops on sometimes along with traction light also. i have checked both front wheels near the hub. wiring seems to be okay? i have 2003 buick century. i think the sensor is built right into the hub, dont really want to replace the whole hub assembly, any ideas thanks bro.
@reddog9401 I don't have any ABS videos yet but you need to find what code is stored first in order to diagnose the problem. It usually requires a special scan tool to pull the codes.
Eric, my car bogs down at low rpm's and doesn't want to pull the load but when you push the gas pedal all the way to the floor it picks up speed and works normal, Also when speeding up it will shift down in the gears and over revs. please help
@partyboyperk With no CEL I would look to the basics, first check timing both mechanical and ignition. I might also be looking for an exhaust restriction in your case, you might try dropping the exhaust at the exhaust manifold and then driving it, it may be loud but if it performs better then you would know that an exhaust restriction is your problem.
@EricTheCarGuy actually there is a light on but i didn't see it and if i heated the motor up would that help loosen the bolts on the exhaust cause i don't have a torch set.
@partyboyperk What is the code for the light? No, running the engine will not heat the fasteners up enough to get them loose, watch the video I did on getting bolts loose with a torch.
@EricTheCarGuy i dont have a meter or what ever you call it and i probably could get a torch but it runs perfect at idle but the temperature is a little hot and from my experience with cars that could mean that the exhaust could be restricted. Im thinking that it might be the catalytic converter but again im not for sure also the exhaust steams even when the car has been running for while. it has puzzled me.
@partyboyperk Sometimes you need the right tools to repair things effectively. Don't make the assumption about your catalytic converter, assumptions get expensive. Good luck.
Unfortunately Honda ignored the OBD 2 connector location requirement on my 97 Accord It's behind the ash tray. Almost like they were hiding it from us.
Luckily it's simple to get to apply the parking brake and shift to low to get clearance open the cover and pull straight out.
@syphilistic Actually they didn't "ignore" it because the original mandate for OBDII was that the DLC be located "under the dash" and was not specific on placement until 99-00 model year when they changed the regulation on it's location. Personally I think it's easier to get to the one behind the ash tray as I'm too fat to bend over to reach under the dash.
@EricTheCarGuy Ahh interesting bit of info. Also at least on 97 Accords they still have the 2 pin wire to pull codes like OBD 1s had. So you have the option to not use a reader. The 3 pin wire for Honda's proprietary code reader from the OBD 1 days is gone though.
Hey Eric. I always watch ur videos whenever I get stuck with something. I appreciate the help u be giving and hope that others do too. Well, I had a problem recently with my 94 Honda Civic and when I drive for around 10 minutes at least, the check engine light comes and stays on and still drives normal. Whenever I shut the car off and start it on, the light doesn't come on til I drive again for a bit. I jumped the connector to get a code and got 43, fuel system supply. What could be wrong?
@VietBloodXIII That code is for the O2 sensor and probably means it is out of range. Given the age of the car it's probably not a bad idea to replace it. Also the way the CEL comes on is typical of an O2 problem since the computer doesn't even look at it's input until the engine reaches a given temperature.
Hi Eric, stumbled upon your video looking for answers. I had a check engine light come on in my 2001 chevy malibu today. It's been leaking something for about 4-5 months, but i brought it to the shop last month and didnt find a leak. i was told it might be exhaust leaking - condensation or something?? anyway the colour is very dark, but not oil. I havnt changed my air filter in 3 years...unless they do that during oil change . Do you have a suggestion for me? Should i take it back to the shop?
@jaruss0225 The CEL and leak may not be related. You need to find the code that is stored for the CEL in order to proceed with that. As for the leak it's really hard to say without seeing it for myself. I could be condensation from the exhaust or just condensation from the HVAC, both of which are normal.
Hi Eric, i like to watch your video and its very helping, its owesome. I'm have a 1990 Honda accord LX, and my car is shacking a lot when i pushed the brake, and also the check engine light (when the ignition key on) wont on at all before i started the engine, only sometimes the ceck engine light is on (when the ignition key on). So please give me some idea to what happen with my car. I appreciated thank you.
@6015414 Sounds like you might have warped rotors, watch the video I did on changing captive Honda rotors. As for the check engine light you need to get the code to know where to start there. I plan to do a video on this at some point in the future, sorry I don't have it for you yet.
@EricTheCarGuy Thank you for the quick reply. I had my rotor fixed today, thank you for your suggestion. And i ask a lot of mecanic about my check engine light problem, they said it was fine but i didn't pass the smock check because of my check engine light wont on at all (before i start the engine). Anyway i will wait for your next video, thanks ERIC, i appreciated a lot.
@EricTheCarGuy I had my rotor fixed today, thanks for your suggestion. I ask a few mecanic about my check engine light, they said its fine and no problem but honestly i didn't pass the smock check because of the check engine light wont on at all (BEFORE THE ENGINE START and the ignition key on position on, only sometimes the light on). Anyway thank you very much for your quick reply and suggestion. you're owesome, i'll wait for the next video.
Just the vid I was looking for....my 03 Saturn Vue gets one engine light after another.....it never ends ! So what vehicle is in this vid...a frick'n Saturn Vue ! lmao
My friend has a check engine light on in his car, and the code that was retrieved indicated a faulty MAF sensor. Is the "tap test" (tapping it while the car is running - if it goes to stall, its bad) a legitimate test for determining if the MAF sensor is faulty? Thanks very much!
@founditnow54 That is a valid test however I would also check for air leaks in the air tube leading to the engine after the sensor, any leaks here will cause a problem and also set the code for a MAF sensor. You might also try cleaning it with some carburetor cleaner to see if that helps before you replace it.
@EricTheCarGuy Ok I will look for leaks on the intake as well. I think he said they already tried to clean it out, and it was ineffective. Thanks again for answering, its greatly appreciated.
@founditnow54 I meant leaks in the rubber hose leading from the sensor to the intake but checking for vacuum leaks at the intake would not be a bad idea either.
@bemeathome Well Evap is short for the Evaporative, part of the evaporitive system that handles gas vapors in the fuel system. Not sure what the "cont" means. What is the code?
@bemeathome Hi, i have a question, my car after 3000 miles tells me to change the oil, but after 1000 miles, my check engine turns, changed the oil, how can i reset the check engine?? Its a bmw 330i 2004. And one last question, my car leaks oil, what could be the first common problem.
1994 dodge caravan 3.0 liter....for some reason the check engine light comes on after about 5-10 minutes of the engine being on....I had a mechanic scan it and no data came up..=(
That's interesting. Check the fuses for the ECU, better yet check all the fuses. If you don't find any bad ones you might have a bad connection at the DLC (the connector for the scanner)
I havent checked the fuses yet but I know its not the connection as the mechanic used 2 different chords and tried it 4 times and made sure it was tight
What about the wires going into the back of the connector on the car, the terminals inside it, or some other location in the circuit? There are usually a set of tests that get performed (often specific to manufacturer) whenever a condition like the one you are experiencing happens to find out if the signal is getting to the DLC.
do you know where I can get a printout of this so I can give it to my mechanic as I am not sure....he wants to find out as he said the engine seems to be working fine
Maybe take a snapshot of this page and print it? Either way every manufacturer has a trouble shooting tree for no communication with the DLC, THAT is what you really need.
hey how much is it to replace a map sensor roughly? I checked the engine codes on my 94 honda civic and it flashed 5 times. I looked up the code and it said "Code 3 and 5 Manifold Absolute Pressure" if you can tell me I would greatly appreciate it. also is it something that can be replaced easily?
First, I don't do pricing here so I can't answer that. Second MAP sensors rarely go bad, if they set a code it is usually an indication of a condition elsewhere or a problem with the wires coming from the map. As it happens I think on that car their are 2 similar connectors on the throttle body that can get mixed up and cause that code. You can tell if a MAP is bad by looking at it's reading on a scan tool and comparing it to the BARO sensor KOEO, if they read the same, the MAP is good.
Hey Eric I got my 2000 Silverado 1500 checked out and it has a code P0753 "Shift Solenoid A Electrical". I read up on this and it says that the wiring may be short circuiting. If I have a short to ground what do you recommend? Do I need to replace solenoid. I also went to Auto Zone and they didn't know what type of solenoid i needed??
If I'm honest I don't know either. As for shift solenoids or any electrical component you need to see if it has the things it needs like power and ground at the proper times, the wiring also needs to be checked for shorts to ground or power. I'm sorry but I just don't have the capability to go through these tests in a text response. I will be covering basic electrical diagnosis in future videos however.
Eric, i have a code P2119 with my mazda5 2006 the local car shop did the test. Then i went to the nearest mazda dealer to fix the problem since is under warranty. The light is off, but out of curiosity since i have my own OBD reader, I plug it in and check if the code is still there. The code p2119 is still there but there is no check engine light. Why? do i have to erase it using my OBD or return it to the dealer?
If the light is not on but the code is still stored it might be that it was not reset at the dealer. If you don't reset it yourself it may go away on it's own, usually after 50 starts of the vehicle. It may still be there as a "soft" code, something the the PCM is motoring but does not detect a fault with at this time.
I have a question How set the timming, did I need to disconnect a sensor or a wire on my 93 mercury villager minni van is 3.0 engine and how to jump the computer to check for codes Thank you very much.
I'm sorry but I don't know the exact procedure your looking for as far as the timing goes. If memory serves however all you need do is look under the passenger seat for the PCM and look for blinking LED's that will tell you engine codes. I think.
Oh yeah, I then opened my manual book and it states that modification to made to transmission exhaust or fuel system can affect emissions controls and may cause the service engine soon light to come on. Also isn't the filter contaminated because they did flush the transmission?
Well I don't know what kind of car we are talking about here but these are the basics. Perhaps someone at the shop accidentally disconnected something during the procedures they performed. What I would start with is finding out what code is stored for the light and go from there. It could also have nothing to do with the transmission service.
Eric I also have a question. I went to a shop where they replaced the transmission filter and gasket before flushing the transmission. I also had the gas filter replaced along with rear differential. My Service Engine soon light turns on after I leave, what do you think it could be?
I have a question why the check engine light blinks once when i turn the key to the on position, but then when i turn the car on there is no check engine light.. i just want to know if there is anything i should know, i have a 1990 GMC Sierra that has a 5.7L v8 chevy 350
The light is suppose to come on for a few seconds while cranking as a bulb check and then go out. If it is blinking it might indicate a problem, you can check this by hooking up a scanner and checking for codes.
i just finished the engine performance class and my instructor said if the engine light is blinking it means severe engine problem as opposed to just being lit indicating an emissions problem.
hi i have a question what does exhaust pressure sensor malfunction mean i been trying to look and i cannot find the meaning can you please help me out? thank you so much
I don't know of exhaust pressure as being one of the things that would show up on a CEL. Is the car turbocharged? If not you may be referring to the EGR which stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. Some manufacturers monitor pressure here to monitor flow.
well i have a 1997 ford aspire and the light just went on yesterday i recently bought it from someone and had to do some repairs right after i got my front brakes replaced thats when the check engine light went on so i dont know what it could be the machanic checked the code and its P0470 and it came up as exhaust pressure sensor malfunction i dont know what to do the car has been sitting at the previous owners drive way for a year do you think that could be it?
Would high heat make the check engine light come on?
it came on about 2 days ago when i was going up a hill when it was 37C(100F) outside, but when i restarted the car on a flat surface it hasnt come back on since
Depends on the model and what the code was. Heat can contribute to a lot of failures in a lot of systems. Based on what you described check for an exhaust restriction.
With OBD1 there were no standards between manufactures. I would need to know make and model, then I MIGHT be able to help, I don't know all the procedures or the codes for all manufacturers. You could do a search on your car to see if there is a site where you could go to get procedures and codes and an explanation of what what they mean. Good luck.
ok u know when u put the key on the car like some lights come on and then my engine light is off. so when u start the start the car after 10 seconds all lights going off u know what i mean. i take off the speedometer and chechked the light thats stilll same and i asked u if i willl change the speedometer the engine light will be work or no...
I would say that the most likely cause of the bulb not working is a burned out bulb. I'm not so confident that replacing the instrument cluster will solve your problem. In normal operation when you first start the car the light should be on for about 10 seconds then go off, this is referred to as "bulb check". I would check to see of you have power and ground at the bulb when you first turn the key on, if not, follow the ckt back to the source to find the problem, use a wiring diagram 4 this.
hey body i have a question about my car i have a 99 honda accord 2dr lx 3.0 engine and my engine light is doesnt work i checked the light and speedometer still same. what can i do to fix the problem??? if i get a new speedometer its gona be ok or what??? thanks for help again....please answer me...
people must understand scanners give your codes dosent mean thats whats wrong eg lean bank one and 2 most un experienced people would change 02s but a tech knows most common vac leak separate the men from boys
i have a 04 vw golf and the check engine light was on when i bought it. a few days i decided to change the air filter and i did but after i was done i turned on the car and the light was not there no more but the day after i was driving back home and the light went on again!!! i went to autozone and i got the PO411 AND PO420 codes and its something about the catalyst system and the secondary air system..
Good question. I think the air filter replacement had little or nothing to do with the check engine light. PO411 is a secondary air injection system incorrect flow. Secondary air is injected into the catalytic converter to increase it's efficiency. PO420 is a catalyst efficiency below threshold code. Both codes seem to point to a problem in the catalytic converter and it's related system, it MIGHT be bad, it needs further diagnosis. You can PM me for more info if that will help. Good luck.
hey there ,i was replacing some of de fuses on my car jetta GLI 2005,after that the computer on the dash board ,the screen got black, and the check engine turns on, what does this mean? can i keep driving my car ?
Have you installed anything new like a stereo or sat nav or anything like that? It sounds like you have some kind of short somewhere that you need to fix.
Well Done.. I've run into a few "Lean" codes on Fords. Looks like maybe a dirty Mass Air but if ya look closer the Baro is out of range. Ya have to disconnect the Batt for 10 minutes to reset Baro to 29.9 or above. A customer went into the mountains and returned.. The Baro never reset..
Good eye my friend! I was under the impression that the baro took a reading just before engine start but I stand corrected. The truth is this car is my neighbors and he had already bought an O2 sensor and asked me to put it on. I told him it might not be the problem but he insisted. I put the sensor on and I haven't heard from him since. I don't like this video for a variety of reasons and it will probably get a redo in the future, I think I can do better. Great comment thanks!
I actually changed my own oil (2001 Saturn) and even rotated my tires. I have lifetime rotation included with my tires (got them a year ago) from a shop about 1 mile away and yet I never actually have it done.

@poop4256 Short the grey connector located under the passenger carpet below the glovebox, turn the key on and count the flashes you can then take that code and put it into the search box on the homepage of my website to find out what the code is for.

Hi there!.. because you replied my question REALLY quickly I felt like asking one more.. THANKS! Nico
sazunike 6 months ago
@sazunike Actually if you watch the tool show videos that I'm posting starting today I talk to the people that sell the scanners about that very thing, you might want to check those out.
EricTheCarGuy 6 months ago
@EricTheCarGuy Thanks!.. Now that I've seen that Pegisys thingy, my new scanner looks like a 1989 gameboy! What i can do is sell my Motorcycle to pay for the scanner I want to have the next time I get a CEL :) ... or maybe I'll have to sell both my motorcycle AND my car to pay for it. That is a sexy scanner!
sazunike 6 months ago
@sazunike Wait to see Wednesday's videos as I go back where they cover more affordable solutions, they have several different 'trim levels' that are much more affordable, there were some other tool makers that I interviewed that also had solutions that were more practical and affordable.

rjhty 6 months ago
@rjhty TPS's hardly ever go bad but they are easy enough to check with a scan tool if you have one that reads a data list, as for the IAC I kind of covered that in Solving Honda Idle Problems but I agree that a video just on the IAC would be a good one. Thanks for the suggestion and comment.

@EricTheCarGuy o rite a no problem u might be able to help me i got a mercedes shes coming up with system to lean bank 1 and a secoundry air injection code also it idles high at times and low at times and wen u shift it in to drive it almost stalls biut then returns to normal idle have u ever seen anything like this
THOLIM90 8 months ago
@THOLIM90 I don't think it's the sensor, it may be a vacuum leak or more likely a problem with the AIR system. If the O2 gets bad readings it will screw up the mixture when the engine is warm and performance issues and poor fuel economy will result.

@EricTheCarGuy ya i got an egr valve solinoid i want to check its a 2 pin solinoid what voltage would be safe to activate it would 12 volts be bit much
THOLIM90 8 months ago
@THOLIM90 I think it operates on 12V if I'm not mistaken, you could just start by checking it's continuity, if it's open then you know it's dead.

Had my mechanic check my engine light and tested it and said its not my 2 o2 sensors or the fuel enjectors. He did a tune up and throtle plate cleaning and re set the codes and i dont even see it come up no more.
Arcane1Soldier 8 months ago
@Arcane1Soldier That sounds like a win, many O2 sensor codes are actually for something else other than the sensor itself. Thanks for the comment.
EricTheCarGuy 8 months ago
I had Autozone check my engine light and the code read that he said, its either a O2 Sensor or Fuel Enjector. Fuel Enjectors for my ford is like 60$ a pop, so i cant afford to buy 4 at the same time, so how the heck would i know if its the fuel enjector and which one. Guess i take one out and put new one in and if no ligh comes on, guess that was the bad one.

reddog9401 11 months ago
@reddog9401 Normally heater codes are pretty straightforward and mean that the O2 needs to be replaced. I would replace the O2 and then clear the code and see if any problem still exists.

How do i retrieve obd 1.5 codes i cant seam to find a scanner other than teh tech 1 that handles these.
KoolCordell 1 year ago
@KoolCordell Before OBDII each manufacturer had their own method of handling codes, you will need to research how to retrieve and interoperate codes for your particular vehicle.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
@EricTheCarGuy the only one i could find is like 280 bucks then get some one on one of the gm forums to literally build a custom cable for it. surly there are other options. was GM the only company to use 1.5? (My car is a 1994 olds 88)
KoolCordell 1 year ago
@KoolCordell How about a paperclip? Jump across the top 2 terminals on the connector (the only 2 with metal in them on the upper right) then turn the key to the "on" position and count the flashes of the check engine light. Do a google search on GM OBD1 codes to determine what the code stands for.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
@KoolCordell Like Eric said use a paprerclip or wire or they even make a "code key" that jumps the terminals.
travjg 1 year ago
Hello Eric ! the check engine light just appeared in my 1994 toyota tercel 214 000 km , i've managed to get the code even if its OBD-I ( thank god toyota has the handy-dandy paper clip trick ) . anyway , it says Air-fuel ratio Lean malfunction . ive watched your video on O2 sensor but i would like to know which procedure do You follow when you have this trouble code what are the things to check/test Thanks a lot Eric ! Keep on Rocking !!
qaz3000 1 year ago
@qaz3000 First don't condemn the O2 straight away, what the code means is that it detects a lean condition it's not likely to be the result of a faulty sensor but some outside factor such as a vacuum leak or insufficient fuel. I would first look for vacuum leaks OR exhaust leaks before the sensor as this is the most likely cause of the code.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
@EricTheCarGuy Thank you so much Eric , i was actuallly going to start by replacing the O2 xD , now that you talk about it i think that an exhaust leak could be the problem ( lots of noise ! but not more than usualy that's why i didn't think about it ) once again thanks for lightning my path toward home repair you rule !

@qaz3000 Your welcome, keep me posted on what you find.

Check engine light still on But now that i removed the Cardbord car doesn't reach normal operating temperature even after 20 min drive ?? radiator is in pretty good shape and i replaced the water pump and temp sensor any idea ??
qaz3000 1 year ago

CanadianCharlie64 1 year ago
@CanadianCharlie64 I'm not sure how it works in the UK but in the states it is mandated that it be mounted blow the drivers side of the dash, in your part of the world that might mean under the glovebox. I have found some behind the fuse box cover so you might want to check there also. It should not however be located under the hood.

reddog9401 1 year ago
@reddog9401 I don't have any ABS videos yet but you need to find what code is stored first in order to diagnose the problem. It usually requires a special scan tool to pull the codes.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago

@partyboyperk Do you have a check engine light on? If so what's the code?
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
@EricTheCarGuy There isnt a light on and I dont have a tester
partyboyperk 1 year ago
@partyboyperk With no CEL I would look to the basics, first check timing both mechanical and ignition. I might also be looking for an exhaust restriction in your case, you might try dropping the exhaust at the exhaust manifold and then driving it, it may be loud but if it performs better then you would know that an exhaust restriction is your problem.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
@EricTheCarGuy actually there is a light on but i didn't see it and if i heated the motor up would that help loosen the bolts on the exhaust cause i don't have a torch set.
partyboyperk 1 year ago
@partyboyperk What is the code for the light? No, running the engine will not heat the fasteners up enough to get them loose, watch the video I did on getting bolts loose with a torch.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
@EricTheCarGuy i dont have a meter or what ever you call it and i probably could get a torch but it runs perfect at idle but the temperature is a little hot and from my experience with cars that could mean that the exhaust could be restricted. Im thinking that it might be the catalytic converter but again im not for sure also the exhaust steams even when the car has been running for while. it has puzzled me.
partyboyperk 1 year ago
@partyboyperk Sometimes you need the right tools to repair things effectively. Don't make the assumption about your catalytic converter, assumptions get expensive. Good luck.

Unfortunately Honda ignored the OBD 2 connector location requirement on my 97 Accord It's behind the ash tray. Almost like they were hiding it from us.
Luckily it's simple to get to apply the parking brake and shift to low to get clearance open the cover and pull straight out.
syphilistic 1 year ago
@syphilistic Actually they didn't "ignore" it because the original mandate for OBDII was that the DLC be located "under the dash" and was not specific on placement until 99-00 model year when they changed the regulation on it's location. Personally I think it's easier to get to the one behind the ash tray as I'm too fat to bend over to reach under the dash.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
@EricTheCarGuy Ahh interesting bit of info. Also at least on 97 Accords they still have the 2 pin wire to pull codes like OBD 1s had. So you have the option to not use a reader. The 3 pin wire for Honda's proprietary code reader from the OBD 1 days is gone though.
syphilistic 1 year ago
VietBloodXIII 1 year ago

Should i take it back to the shop?
jaruss0225 1 year ago
@jaruss0225 The CEL and leak may not be related. You need to find the code that is stored for the CEL in order to proceed with that. As for the leak it's really hard to say without seeing it for myself. I could be condensation from the exhaust or just condensation from the HVAC, both of which are normal.

My friend has a check engine light on in his car, and the code that was retrieved indicated a faulty MAF sensor. Is the "tap test" (tapping it while the car is running - if it goes to stall, its bad) a legitimate test for determining if the MAF sensor is faulty? Thanks very much!
founditnow54 1 year ago
@founditnow54 That is a valid test however I would also check for air leaks in the air tube leading to the engine after the sensor, any leaks here will cause a problem and also set the code for a MAF sensor. You might also try cleaning it with some carburetor cleaner to see if that helps before you replace it.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
@EricTheCarGuy Ok I will look for leaks on the intake as well. I think he said they already tried to clean it out, and it was ineffective. Thanks again for answering, its greatly appreciated.
founditnow54 1 year ago
@founditnow54 I meant leaks in the rubber hose leading from the sensor to the intake but checking for vacuum leaks at the intake would not be a bad idea either.

djchangsta 1 year ago
That's interesting. Check the fuses for the ECU, better yet check all the fuses. If you don't find any bad ones you might have a bad connection at the DLC (the connector for the scanner)
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
@EricTheCarGuy
I havent checked the fuses yet but I know its not the connection as the mechanic used 2 different chords and tried it 4 times and made sure it was tight
djchangsta 1 year ago
What about the wires going into the back of the connector on the car, the terminals inside it, or some other location in the circuit? There are usually a set of tests that get performed (often specific to manufacturer) whenever a condition like the one you are experiencing happens to find out if the signal is getting to the DLC.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
@EricTheCarGuy
do you know where I can get a printout of this so I can give it to my mechanic as I am not sure....he wants to find out as he said the engine seems to be working fine
djchangsta 1 year ago
Maybe take a snapshot of this page and print it? Either way every manufacturer has a trouble shooting tree for no communication with the DLC, THAT is what you really need.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
hey how much is it to replace a map sensor roughly? I checked the engine codes on my 94 honda civic and it flashed 5 times. I looked up the code and it said "Code 3 and 5 Manifold Absolute Pressure" if you can tell me I would greatly appreciate it. also is it something that can be replaced easily?
ChiefMojoRisingLives 1 year ago

I also went to Auto Zone and they didn't know what type of solenoid i needed??
chapino101 2 years ago

BrunsBrielle 2 years ago
If the light is not on but the code is still stored it might be that it was not reset at the dealer. If you don't reset it yourself it may go away on it's own, usually after 50 starts of the vehicle. It may still be there as a "soft" code, something the the PCM is motoring but does not detect a fault with at this time.
EricTheCarGuy 2 years ago
I have a question How set the timming, did I need to disconnect a sensor or a wire on my 93 mercury villager minni van is 3.0 engine and how to jump the computer to check for codes Thank you very much.
TANQUE102030 2 years ago
I'm sorry but I don't know the exact procedure your looking for as far as the timing goes. If memory serves however all you need do is look under the passenger seat for the PCM and look for blinking LED's that will tell you engine codes. I think.
EricTheCarGuy 2 years ago
Oh yeah, I then opened my manual book and it states that modification to made to transmission exhaust or fuel system can affect emissions controls and may cause the service engine soon light to come on. Also isn't the filter contaminated because they did flush the transmission?
chapino101 2 years ago
Well I don't know what kind of car we are talking about here but these are the basics. Perhaps someone at the shop accidentally disconnected something during the procedures they performed. What I would start with is finding out what code is stored for the light and go from there. It could also have nothing to do with the transmission service.
EricTheCarGuy 2 years ago
Eric I also have a question. I went to a shop where they replaced the transmission filter and gasket before flushing the transmission. I also had the gas filter replaced along with rear differential. My Service Engine soon light turns on after I leave, what do you think it could be?
chapino101 2 years ago
mines been on 4 years and runs good
harryahmed420 2 years ago
That can happen depending on the fault that caused the light in the first place, however your gas mileage may be off as a result.

The light is suppose to come on for a few seconds while cranking as a bulb check and then go out. If it is blinking it might indicate a problem, you can check this by hooking up a scanner and checking for codes.

i just finished the engine performance class and my instructor said if the engine light is blinking it means severe engine problem as opposed to just being lit indicating an emissions problem.

hi i have a question what does exhaust pressure sensor malfunction mean i been trying to look and i cannot find the meaning can you please help me out? thank you so much
italianmami0112 2 years ago
I don't know of exhaust pressure as being one of the things that would show up on a CEL. Is the car turbocharged? If not you may be referring to the EGR which stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. Some manufacturers monitor pressure here to monitor flow.

well i have a 1997 ford aspire and the light just went on yesterday i recently bought it from someone and had to do some repairs right after i got my front brakes replaced thats when the check engine light went on so i dont know what it could be the machanic checked the code and its P0470 and it came up as exhaust pressure sensor malfunction i dont know what to do the car has been sitting at the previous owners drive way for a year do you think that could be it?
thank you for trying to help

Ford uses pressure sensors to monitor EGR flow, I suspect you have an issue in that system.

I got an 02 ford explorer and got a number 4 misfire. Can that be due to old plugs, and wires? bought car a year ago and haven't changed them yet?
sarahandjim92405 2 years ago
That would be the first place I would look to correct a misfire. I would recommend Motorcraft plugs if you can afford them.

i have a quick question eric
Would high heat make the check engine light come on?
it came on about 2 days ago when i was going up a hill when it was 37C(100F) outside, but when i restarted the car on a flat surface it hasnt come back on since
IIGrayfoxII 2 years ago
Depends on the model and what the code was. Heat can contribute to a lot of failures in a lot of systems. Based on what you described check for an exhaust restriction.

i have an obd1 and i tried the paper pin trick but i dont get any flashes on my dash... any suggestion?
princejaa 2 years ago
With OBD1 there were no standards between manufactures. I would need to know make and model, then I MIGHT be able to help, I don't know all the procedures or the codes for all manufacturers. You could do a search on your car to see if there is a site where you could go to get procedures and codes and an explanation of what what they mean. Good luck.

ok u know when u put the key on the car like some lights come on and then my engine light is off. so when u start the start the car after 10 seconds all lights going off u know what i mean. i take off the speedometer and chechked the light thats stilll same and i asked u if i willl change the speedometer the engine light will be work or no...
bozkurttolga28 2 years ago
I would say that the most likely cause of the bulb not working is a burned out bulb. I'm not so confident that replacing the instrument cluster will solve your problem. In normal operation when you first start the car the light should be on for about 10 seconds then go off, this is referred to as "bulb check". I would check to see of you have power and ground at the bulb when you first turn the key on, if not, follow the ckt back to the source to find the problem, use a wiring diagram 4 this.

bozkurttolga28 2 years ago
I'm not exactly sure what you are asking. Do you mean that the light for the check engine indicator is not working?
EricTheCarGuy 2 years ago
people must understand scanners give your codes dosent mean thats whats wrong eg lean bank one and 2 most un experienced people would change 02s but a tech knows most common vac leak separate the men from boys

hey eric i have a question ..
i have a 04 vw golf and the check engine light was on when i bought it. a few days i decided to change the air filter and i did but after i was done i turned on the car and the light was not there no more but the day after i was driving back home and the light went on again!!! i went to autozone and i got the PO411 AND PO420 codes and its something about the catalyst system and the secondary air system..
any clues? im confused now. please help
thank you
bfg8652 2 years ago
Good question. I think the air filter replacement had little or nothing to do with the check engine light. PO411 is a secondary air injection system incorrect flow. Secondary air is injected into the catalytic converter to increase it's efficiency. PO420 is a catalyst efficiency below threshold code. Both codes seem to point to a problem in the catalytic converter and it's related system, it MIGHT be bad, it needs further diagnosis. You can PM me for more info if that will help. Good luck.
