did the landing gear break on landing? anyways i was gonna tell you myuncle has 2 of those planes in mint condition hanging in his garage and wont sell them for nothing, beautiful plane!! he used old chain saw motors for his,
Great video, Dave. A Byron Pitts is a love/hate relationship. When it is working right, I love em, when it wasn't working right, I hated it. There really was not much in between. LOL You actually had a a Byro drive that worked. Rossi's are so tempremental. This prompted me to dig up my old footage of my Pits and post it as well. : )
Great story... I think I caught this on RCGroups too... you've got some great stuff going on in RC... I'm subscribing. I'm surprised at how effficient that Byro-drive really is, I've seen them years ago...but you've got it dialed in here. Good stuff man. :)
do i need a speed controller for a nitro rc plane? i am building a profile edge 540 45" and planning on using a cox 049 with the throttle ring to power it and am not sure if i need a speed controller as it is my first plane. my radio is a spektrum dx6i if that makes a difference...
that is sweet --- what a sound ---- nice job on the rebuild too --- I get a kick outa the smile on your face at the end ----- "big kid" good for you !!!!! I'm going to watch the corn field video now.
magnificent lane Mr Dave... i love it... i can only fly that one on my simulator and it was awesome watching your video... more power to you and God bless
Good video, I have a question about the byron company. There used to be Byron air shows, with spectacular landscaping, I was told even shipps on water and so. I could not find any info about it on the internet, nor did I ever see any of it. I´d appreciate any hints.
The introduction music is appropriate for the time this kit was originally built, and fades out at the correct time for the body that follows. The descriptions of what is needed to get the model flying again, and the narrations of the engine tests, maiden, and subsequent flights are very well laid out. And yes, the engine and drive system sound great! Overall, this appears to be of professional quality. THIS is how you make an RC video.
So the belt drive trades RPM for torque? Beautiful plane. It could use a 45cc gasser, although it's probably more true to scale with your setup. These days, planes rip into the sky after five feet. Yours is graceful,
Looks like this grandpa flies as smooth and steady as any trainer would!!! Its a beautiful model, hope it lasts at least 30 more years flying like that ^_^
hey im in the process of putting together a pitts arf from hobbico, but heres the catch, it was left in a friends backyard in 2001 and they gave it to my dad, (the plane wings struts, not even the tail was on!) i was wondering how u mouted ur throttle servo and struts, also waht engine do u have on that? if u dont remember me i was pspboyy55, my dad had an aircore....
I have, what I believe to be, an entire Byron Pitts Kits stored away. As I recall some minor construction was started then set aside for all these years. I have several boxes of parts and I would bet they are all there. No motor or radio gear of course ... just the plane ... waiting still to be built and flown. Im in So Calif. near Los Angeles. Maybe you interested in building a new one with a newer more potent power plant? Reply if you are.
Back in the day, just the plane was $500, then motor $300, then Byrodrive $199, then radio, $1000..:Plus.fuel monocoat, etc.ect. It was not too cheap, but lasted me a long time.
Nice video! I just purchased at an auction yesterday is what I believe to be one of these kits. It is mostly made of foam. The top wingspan is around 66 inches. Do you happen to have any documentation on the plane (mainly the CG location). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Thanks. I balanced mine upside down, as I do with all tail draggers and just in front of the high part of the wing, it should hang a few degrees nose down. I do not have any documentation. Sorry.
If you know how to fly, they are all easy. However, bigger planes are easier to see and more stable, because they do not get bounced around in the wind as much, but still all fly using the same controls.
Yes larger is easier, much more stable. As of the pitts I have one and once its in flight it is very easy to fly. Getting it of the ground and landing it are a different story. Take offs aren't to hard once you get used to the torque and the short tail.
It is 1/3 scale. I love the Byro drive for the sound. Byron used to sell Quadras for his birds about 3 years later. This was very innovative at the time and like any antique, I will leave it as is. I know Byron pretty well and he loved his Byro drives and Byro jets.
I am refurbishing one of these 30 year old 33% Byron Originals Pitts S-1. I have installed a Zenoah G-62. Model weighs only 17.5lbs all in. Should go like stink. The original had a terrible fibreglass job. I've stripped it all off the foam and am redoing it with 3/4oz cloth and Zpoxy Finishing Resin. Hopefully airborne Summer 2009 up here in Canada.
I had one of these! One of our club members had it, cracked it up on it's 1st fligh, (broke both (foam) wings in half) He just gave it to me. I repaired the wings, installed a Supertigre 3000 in it. Yep. I usually use starters, but this one is a little big for my starter. I loosen the glo plug to release compression. Seen the second video I put up on this yet? In the cornfield.
I have cut my hands arms fingers and broken 4 bones in my foot playing with helis and planes, so I can appreciate what you mean when you say your more careful now. LOL. Thanks.
If you saw how narrow the road was and the drop in over cars and lamp post, I guess I was lucky. I forgot how heavy it was. But my 2nd video, was better, eh? See above.
Belt drives are not common anymore, with bigger gas engines and gear drives. But back then this was really something. I appreciate your comments.. Dave
I love it !!! The good ole' days .. Has one when I was 13 years old. Grannie Sibbie thought if she bought me sweet rc airplanes I waould stay pot of gangs and become a pilot like great uncle Neil. lol. I sure miss the byron line and grannies credit card. It did work though..lol
sry I spoke too soon. You have a mechanic devise to get a lower prop speed. Do you know if an electric engine can be used to start the gaz engine? And eventually recharge the battery when the gaz engine is running.
There used to be some starters around, but they never recharged the batteries. My drive is a belt reduction system, but there are plenty of gear drive adapters for motors and engines now that do the same thing.
Thanks. I have the AMA (academy of model aviation) insurance. IT covers up to 2.5 million in damage, if I crashed it into someone. Its a good idea to have, cause you never know.
Dave i just keep on coming back to this video as that byron pitts special is one sweet r/c plane and you are right it do sound real nice,so please keep your great videos coming as i know we all do appreciate them,5*
Hey Dave, an old timer I fly with has this plane, he has th old Byro drive to but no longer flies it with that, I thinks hes got a 90 or a 120 on it it goes like stink and is still one of his regular fliers, looks absolutly awesome doing inverted flie byes about 4-5 ft of the deck, hes a good old flier that guy, starts about a 1000 ft out and up flips her over and dives inverted to the runways and blows by us just smoking all inverted, not amazing technical flying but impressive to most
Thanks. Yep, I have flown the Gas versions too with Quadra 50s too. They do cook pretty good. I like the sound of mine however, and since it was the first version for Byron, I wanted to keep it stock. I will be making another video of it flying soon, doing some nice stunts. Stay tuned.
Those two landings looked heavy. Did you do the gear at the end? The left wing appeared to be higher than the right on the last taxi, or is that just the cambre of the road?
Yes, I had obstacles to drop in over so it looked heavy. It is fine and I will fly it again soon as I can find a bigger place with no curbs. Thanks for your comments.
You're luckier than most then. A few years ago a friend of mine was tuning a 91FS when he inadvertantly leaned it out too much and it kicked back hard enough the prop spun off and walked up his arm for quite a few stitches. I also saw a brand new Zinger split in half across the prop shaft and a piece of it nearly severed the fellows' ear. We picked up the other piece over a 100 feet down the pits. It does happen and it usually happens to someone that's been flying a while.
Not lucky. I was in Marine Corps aviation for 33 years and totally check my equipment. Guess that is why I get the big bucks. I bend my props. Remind me not to fly with your unlucky friends. You don't stop and seem to want me to hurt myself so you can say I told you so. Ive been an Academy of Model Aeronautics safety officer for 40 years and a LM and CD. I ride motorcycles too. Bet you have a lot to say about that. Shit, a wheel may fall off.
Thanks, yah after all that hard work converting it we made like 5 things that were really hard to make. And it crashed 4th flight :( Well its all a learning experience so atleast we know its possible! I just purchased a alpha 40 by hanger 9 because i have never flew a big plane. Thanks for all the help ^^ i enjoy watching your videos!
Hello, i commented earlier about the conversion from electric to gas. Well in mid air the battery hatch broke open and the battery fell out. The plane did a half throttle into the ground from about 200 some feet up. Now i have a .25 engine laying around. What would you recomend i buy for this engine. I was thinking a some time of sport plane. If you know could you tell me. I've been looking around nd can't find anything for a .25
I thought the flying was good. I just don't agree that your method of ground testing is safe. I too have flown very large gas powered birds and have seen and felt firsthand the damage that they can do. There isn't any plane I know of that can't be strapped down or held by an assistant. I've seen brand new wood props fail that looked perfect. Anyways, it's your life the first time it happens.
Thanks. It looks worse than it was. I have great respect for props Also this prop has flown over 10 years and never had a nick on it. Wood props just don't fly apart unless there is a crack. In my 50 years of serious flying, I have never seen a wood prop fly apart nor has one of mine either. Plastic props break way more easily.
I really hate to say this but the way you test engines would scare the bejesus out of me. Never ever straddle a prop while doing engine tests, especially on a bird that hasn't flown in years. Ever had a firewall seperate? The plane flies great but I know of a man in iowa that got a blade right through the heart a few years ago doing exactly what you show in the video. Get something to hold it back and do your fiddling from the back of the prop.
It looks bad but I assure you I did it safely. Besides there is no other way. Ive done this 50 years, got lots of cuts, even broken bones. I learned so definitely respect the props and rotor blades. Sorry you didnt like my video. Thanks for your concern though.
Dave that's so awesome! I've been surfing around you tube looking at several R/C Models. I watched a B-52 drop bombs there are so many great videos out there. I'm sure you have watched them. I didn't realize how big they are the jets I watched were unreal. I watched a few crash as well a guy started to jut about tear up! I would too! Great plane Dave and another AWESOME video!
Thanks. I had not a problem at all with the radio. It is an excellent radio and I had no frequency worries while flying it or any interference either. Better than what was in it, since old Frequencies were banned years ago.
No problem. My pitts is just a big Foamie and the radio doesn't know the difference in motors. I tested it thoroughly before flying it without a glitch. I would never fly that far away anyway.
Nice plane. I have a beautiful one I tried to sell on rcuniverse for $600 with a new g62 gas engine. Sounds awesome! What was I thinking. Luckily no one bought it.
They have no clue. It weighed 25 with the old radio and a Quadro on it, and I ran it rich this entire flight. It is not overweight, especially with 2 wings that are over 5 feet long and the entire plane is made from foam.
How can they argue with success? Some people talk the talk, but cant walk the walk.
Wow that engine looks so small for what it pushes. I've looed at tons of R/C stuff on here and the gas motors are usually much bigger. That's one cool looking plane how much was that back in the day?
Back in the day, this cost me almost $2000 with the Radio. The engine is an Italian Rossi, and can spin a big prop at 3 to 1 ratio, and really sounds cool.
Dave where was this plane stored anyway's? That is an Awesome plane! I love the engines that's my favorite part of R/C planes is the engines. I can't wait until I have the time t get out flying! GREAT JOB DAVE!
It hangs from the ceiling in my garage and can be seen in many videos of mine, but when down on the ground, it looks much bigger. Glad you liked it and thanks kindly for your comments.
P.S. Knowing my enjoyment of flying, my wife bought me a ...................Hoverlites heli! This one was adjustable by the pot to not spin as bad as yours, but it is a POS. Good news is that it was only $20.
Yep the caster oil that spits out the exhaust gets on the head and smokes showing how hot it gets when it runs. But that is all normal temps in RC air cooled engines.
Not too bad, as it was not damaged, just dirty and needed re-heated to shrink the coating. The servos stayed and it was easy to plug in a new Rx after I soldered on the new servo wires. After that, piece of cake.
It's IronBay that bought all the mold I think, right? I have a Byron ducted fan F16 with a Rossi 1.05 in it, will be flying again this fall at the jet rally again. cool plane, and love the belt drive. They used it to bring the rpm down, instead of a different lower rpm engine?
Yes. Glad your flying your F-16s. I can't as I blew them all up making Blue Thunder..LOL.
The belt drive actually did not let the Rossi rpms drop. They actually run higher at about 21,000 RPMs. But it, like a gear drive, let us run bigger props with more torque. It works pretty good and made a heck of a neat sound.
Thanks kindly for your comments. Crashing is always on my mind, especially with an Antique Aircraft, but I have lots of experience in flying so, if anything, I was worried about the engine staying running mostly.
Nice work Dave. Very Different power plant thant what you would see in a mode l that size these days. i had a Rossi 61 myself, and used it in a pattern plane with a pipe. I am not so sure i would trust 25 year old servos myself. Very Nice.
Thanks. Well, I used to worke at Kraft and built those servos myself. They were $60 a piece back then and are very smooth and strong. I have less faith in a lot of servos today, but thanks for your comments. The Rossi is a very sweet engine, as you know too.
Great job on this video and all of your videos! I was just wondering if you could maybe put up a video of how to tune a gas engine. I have only been flying electrics and really want to get into gas ones, but I don't know how to tune the high speed and low speen needle or even what they do!!! Thanks, and keep the videos rolling out!!!

Nice video.
I have the exact same plane.
It also has not flown for 25 years.
I just got back into the hobby and my plan is to see it fly again.
It has a Quadra 50cc gas motor.
It also has Kraft radio/servoes in it that I have to modify or replace.
I will be using a Spektrum DX8 Tx.
P.S. The quadra sounds better !!

Why would you risk a model like that by flying on a public road, or private drive road, with a curb that almost destroyed your model?

Belt drives are not common anymore, with bigger gas engines and gear drives. But back then this was really something. I appreciate your comments.. Dave

I love it !!! The good ole' days .. Has one when I was 13 years old. Grannie Sibbie thought if she bought me sweet rc airplanes I waould stay pot of gangs and become a pilot like great uncle Neil. lol. I sure miss the byron line and grannies credit card. It did work though..lol

Thanks very kindly. Byron's line is soon to debut again, I hear. Better get Granny's credit card again. LOL.

wooohoo it's got a engine starter. Im interested in putting one in my airplane, where can I find such system?
narfy892 3 years ago
sry I spoke too soon. You have a mechanic devise to get a lower prop speed. Do you know if an electric engine can be used to start the gaz engine? And eventually recharge the battery when the gaz engine is running.
narfy892 3 years ago
There used to be some starters around, but they never recharged the batteries. My drive is a belt reduction system, but there are plenty of gear drive adapters for motors and engines now that do the same thing.
NightFlyyer 3 years ago
Man, that thing took off like a brick! And then the caption pops up that it weighs 21 lbs... yup, that confirms it. Big red brick!
canadianmaple09 3 years ago
It's all foam, and flies nicely. Your point? Are you a qualified Pilot of rc to make that assumption? I think not.
NightFlyyer 3 years ago
very impressive....what insurance policies does it have lol? GREAT video.
zzPOPTARTzz 3 years ago
Thanks. I have the AMA (academy of model aviation) insurance. IT covers up to 2.5 million in damage, if I crashed it into someone. Its a good idea to have, cause you never know.

Hey Dave, an old timer I fly with has this plane, he has th old Byro drive to but no longer flies it with that, I thinks hes got a 90 or a 120 on it it goes like stink and is still one of his regular fliers, looks absolutly awesome doing inverted flie byes about 4-5 ft of the deck, hes a good old flier that guy, starts about a 1000 ft out and up flips her over and dives inverted to the runways and blows by us just smoking all inverted, not amazing technical flying but impressive to most
Graiskye 3 years ago
Thanks. Yep, I have flown the Gas versions too with Quadra 50s too. They do cook pretty good. I like the sound of mine however, and since it was the first version for Byron, I wanted to keep it stock. I will be making another video of it flying soon, doing some nice stunts. Stay tuned.
NightFlyyer 3 years ago
Beautiful plane, Dave.
Those two landings looked heavy. Did you do the gear at the end? The left wing appeared to be higher than the right on the last taxi, or is that just the cambre of the road?
Thanks for sharing again! :)
astrospud 3 years ago
Yes, I had obstacles to drop in over so it looked heavy. It is fine and I will fly it again soon as I can find a bigger place with no curbs. Thanks for your comments.
NightFlyyer 3 years ago
You're luckier than most then. A few years ago a friend of mine was tuning a 91FS when he inadvertantly leaned it out too much and it kicked back hard enough the prop spun off and walked up his arm for quite a few stitches. I also saw a brand new Zinger split in half across the prop shaft and a piece of it nearly severed the fellows' ear. We picked up the other piece over a 100 feet down the pits. It does happen and it usually happens to someone that's been flying a while.
randall1959 3 years ago

Errorx33 3 years ago
Hello, i commented earlier about the conversion from electric to gas. Well in mid air the battery hatch broke open and the battery fell out. The plane did a half throttle into the ground from about 200 some feet up. Now i have a .25 engine laying around. What would you recomend i buy for this engine. I was thinking a some time of sport plane. If you know could you tell me. I've been looking around nd can't find anything for a .25
Errorx33 3 years ago
That is a bummer you crashed. I would look on Hobby-lobby(.)com for an appropriate plane. Good luck.
NightFlyyer 3 years ago
I thought the flying was good. I just don't agree that your method of ground testing is safe. I too have flown very large gas powered birds and have seen and felt firsthand the damage that they can do. There isn't any plane I know of that can't be strapped down or held by an assistant. I've seen brand new wood props fail that looked perfect. Anyways, it's your life the first time it happens.
randall1959 3 years ago
NightFlyyer 3 years ago
I really hate to say this but the way you test engines would scare the bejesus out of me. Never ever straddle a prop while doing engine tests, especially on a bird that hasn't flown in years. Ever had a firewall seperate? The plane flies great but I know of a man in iowa that got a blade right through the heart a few years ago doing exactly what you show in the video. Get something to hold it back and do your fiddling from the back of the prop.
randall1959 3 years ago

Great plane Dave and another AWESOME video!

that looks really nice! not sure about using an ar6100 on it tho
vanepico 3 years ago
Thanks. I had not a problem at all with the radio. It is an excellent radio and I had no frequency worries while flying it or any interference either. Better than what was in it, since old Frequencies were banned years ago.
NightFlyyer 3 years ago
don't get me wrong with th radio, its what i use with most my planes, byut only electric ones, i use my ar6200 in my nitro plane
vanepico 3 years ago

Luckily no one bought it.
rcflyer4fun 3 years ago
Do you have any of the specs on the plane you can share with me. Several people said at 21# its way over weight. But it flies great.
rcflyer4fun 3 years ago
They have no clue. It weighed 25 with the old radio and a Quadro on it, and I ran it rich this entire flight. It is not overweight, especially with 2 wings that are over 5 feet long and the entire plane is made from foam.
How can they argue with success? Some people talk the talk, but cant walk the walk.
NightFlyyer 3 years ago
Wow that engine looks so small for what it pushes. I've looed at tons of R/C stuff on here and the gas motors are usually much bigger. That's one cool looking plane how much was that back in the day?
gunlver 3 years ago
Back in the day, this cost me almost $2000 with the Radio. The engine is an Italian Rossi, and can spin a big prop at 3 to 1 ratio, and really sounds cool.
NightFlyyer 3 years ago
Thanks. Glad you still got it. Now go fly it.
NightFlyyer 3 years ago
Dave where was this plane stored anyway's? That is an Awesome plane! I love the engines that's my favorite part of R/C planes is the engines. I can't wait until I have the time t get out flying! GREAT JOB DAVE!
gunlver 3 years ago
It hangs from the ceiling in my garage and can be seen in many videos of mine, but when down on the ground, it looks much bigger. Glad you liked it and thanks kindly for your comments.
NightFlyyer 3 years ago
Not sure what your saying, but this IS a great airframe and was very famous for Charlie Hillard in all the airshows he flew the real one in.
NightFlyyer 3 years ago
Dave,
Great trip to the past, must have been fun.
Jeff
P.S. Knowing my enjoyment of flying, my wife bought me a ...................Hoverlites heli! This one was adjustable by the pot to not spin as bad as yours, but it is a POS. Good news is that it was only $20.
puddud22 3 years ago
Thanks. Still, the hoverlite heli has reversed tail controls and a non proportional throttle. Good luck with it.
NightFlyyer 3 years ago
Nothing broke. Tail wheel is on a "leaf spring" setup with rubber bands and springs that hook to the rudder.

I have that solder gun in black!! it belong to my grandfather...past away 17 years ago
wichotez 3 years ago
Yep, they work great and never burn out.
NightFlyyer 3 years ago
Yep the caster oil that spits out the exhaust gets on the head and smokes showing how hot it gets when it runs. But that is all normal temps in RC air cooled engines.
NightFlyyer 3 years ago
Loved the "beefy under note" of the engine sound, another great view form the one adn ONLY NightFlyyer , thank you for the video...

NightFlyyer 3 years ago
wow, nice, must have been a lot of work to make it fly again!
mordoringer 3 years ago
Not too bad, as it was not damaged, just dirty and needed re-heated to shrink the coating. The servos stayed and it was easy to plug in a new Rx after I soldered on the new servo wires. After that, piece of cake.

There is a Byron F-16 For Sale on Ebay Now.
JOHNM3791 3 years ago
Yep. Thanks.
NightFlyyer 3 years ago
It's IronBay that bought all the mold I think, right? I have a Byron ducted fan F16 with a Rossi 1.05 in it, will be flying again this fall at the jet rally again. cool plane, and love the belt drive. They used it to bring the rpm down, instead of a different lower rpm engine?
warderseeker 3 years ago
NightFlyyer 3 years ago
Thank you very much. I appreciate that.
NightFlyyer 3 years ago
Thanks kindly for your comments. Crashing is always on my mind, especially with an Antique Aircraft, but I have lots of experience in flying so, if anything, I was worried about the engine staying running mostly.
NightFlyyer 3 years ago
Engine sounds sweet! What is the gross weight?
vetterman008 3 years ago
Mine weighs out at 21.1 lbs.
NightFlyyer 3 years ago
Nice work Dave. Very Different power plant thant what you would see in a mode l that size these days. i had a Rossi 61 myself, and used it in a pattern plane with a pipe. I am not so sure i would trust 25 year old servos myself. Very Nice.
tjtg 3 years ago
Thanks. Well, I used to worke at Kraft and built those servos myself. They were $60 a piece back then and are very smooth and strong. I have less faith in a lot of servos today, but thanks for your comments. The Rossi is a very sweet engine, as you know too.
NightFlyyer 3 years ago
Great job on this video and all of your videos! I was just wondering if you could maybe put up a video of how to tune a gas engine. I have only been flying electrics and really want to get into gas ones, but I don't know how to tune the high speed and low speen needle or even what they do!!! Thanks, and keep the videos rolling out!!!
emidgley 3 years ago
Thanks much. Maybe I can do that kind of video some time when I fly it again.
