If you get into this.....go get David Bowie's "I dig everything".....essentially a beach boys knock off.
EVERYONE famous started somewhere...some closer to their goals then others...some tried everything else before they figured out what they were good at.
There was a promo film in '67/'68 of The Hassles/"You Got Me Hummin" that kicked ass. I had the film but it got ruined from heat & humidity. Such a shame on my part. Sorry Billy.
If your uncle is Richie McKenna, he lives here in Palm Beach Florida, it seems. He's offering guitar lessons on Craigslist and mentions this band and clip being on YouTube. That's how I got to this clip.
They are on Amazon. Just look up Hassles, and it should be there. It was re-released as "You got me hummin'" Also, their second album, "Hour Of The Wolf," is available on many low budget Billy Joel compilation releases, even though it is the Hassles.
Billy makes a mistake and looks right at the camera at 0:06, also at 0:42 it looks like Billy is having a convulsion with a sudden facial jolt. Funny stuff!
The Hassles two LPs are frequently available on Ebay, as well a handful of their 45s. In 1999 a CD was released called YOU GOT ME HUMMIN (THE BEST OF THE HASSLES). I have them all.
I HEAR VOICES was a track from the Hassles' debut LP on United Artists Records. Billy Joel's bandmates in the Hassles were Richie McKenner (guitar), John Dizek (vocals) and Jon Small (drums). Bassist Howie Blauvelt curiously is not present in this short clip. Maybe he was there although he did leave the band for a while to perform in a folk duo (!).
Wow! Just found out on Facebook bout this bein Billy's band back then. Cool sounds

When this video started... I was surprised to see what Billy Joel looked like in 1967. If it's Billy Joel on the left... who is on the right?

That was Jon Dizak. He was my room mate in school

Pronounced Dizak, spelled Dizek. He grew up around the corner from me we played on the same little league team together.

I think Billy was only 18 at this time.
