yes I would be posting really soon on my website & you tube. & yes is call Qawaliyah but not many people knows about this gypsy dance, so we call this Iraqi ance to make it easy.
This is Chobi or "qawliyah" dance. Iraq has its a very distinct rhythm and movement it is NOT the same as "gulf style" states or the khaleej such as Kuwait, Saudi, Qatar, UAE and so on. Many mistake this b/c of the "hair toss"... You and your friend did a great interpretation. Its best not to call it Khaleeji please, this is Qawliyah!
@MasriKhaleejDancer: If I say "Chobi" to Iraqis where I live, it means the group line dance (like Debke). Is Chobi used to describe other types of dances as well? I would love more information in this if you have it.
@MasriKhaleejDancer - Well, that all depends on how you want to define "Khaliji"... the term, in the most inclusive sense, refers to the countries and the cutlures of the countries surrounding the Persian Gulf....
@MasriKhaleejDancer: I live in Nashville, TN- the 2nd largest Iraqi community outside Iraq. I've performed this style/song many times. Every Iraqi that sees it is so happy to see their homeland "represented" and are impressed that an American would perform it so authentically. (Kudos to Amani Jabril who choreographed and taught me this style).
@MasriKhaleejDancer- Also, I have studied with the former Iraqi Minister of folk dance who now lives in Nashville. He was born in Lebanon, helped develop Caracella Dance school/company in Beirut. He spent 20 years researching and preserving the folk dances of Iraq INCLUDING "Khaliji" dance FROM IRAQ. He told me that the dance you see above is considered to be a "gypsy" style dance, distinct from other types of Khaliji. But that it is a type of Khaliji as it is from the gulf region of Iraq.
About Iraqi dance, Is from small part from Iraq, this dance has a diffrent name, is also about techniqui, if they are not becareful they can hurt their nake & their spine or worse.. iI perform Iraqi & I dont teache this dance, just cuz its noe easy.. specially if you are not used to move your hair or are flexible with the neck... I do teach my troupe girls & they can tell you that its not as easy as it looks...
@SDStar: Yes, it can be dangerous. When I teach a dance with "hair" moves (mostly gulf styles but sometimes in Turkish and Lebanese belly dance) I teach students how to use their body to create the movement, not just the neck. Maybe we should put a warning on the video "DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!" :)
But there is much more to Khaliji dances than hair, especially when you explore different styles (one of which is this Iraqi Rom style.) I think it is important to share it w/ all students.
There is no such thing as Iraqi Khaleeji. This term is a misnomer. Although Iraq is next ot the Khaleej, this is a dance unique to Iraq. This is a dance done by Iraqi Rom (Gypsies). I've heard Iraqis call it Kawaliya dance since it's attributed to the Iraqi gypies of Southern Iraq.
I'M WITH YOU.. IRAQI KHALEEJI DONT EXIST.. I DANCE IRAQI & IT HAS A DIFFRENT NAME.. ALSO THISE DANCE IS MORE JUMPING & MORE HAIR WORK.... PEOPLE THINKS IS EASY DANCE TO PERFORM BUT ITS NOT.. THEY THINK THEY CAN COPY THE STEPS OUT OF VIDEOS BUT NOT EVEN CLOSE, ONE OF MY FRIENDS WHO IS FROM IRAQ SHOW ME AND TEACHED ME, THATS HOW I KNOW.... GREAT COMENT YOU HAD THERE. PEOPLE NEEDS TO BE MORE EDUCATED... ITS REALLY RARE THAT PEOPLE KNOWS ABOUT THIS TYPE OF DANCE...
@balahadiamark: Yes. But Southern Iraq & the people that do this dance (Rom) are on the same coast as the other gulf states. It has it's own name but as far as dance goes, it is in the same family of dances we call "Khaliji". There are more similarities than differences between this dance and what you would see in Saudi style Khaliji. The basic footwork, body stance, hair, shoulder, hand, & head moves are the same. They differ in terms of the costuming, music, attitude, & additional moves/steps.
