@steeeeker lulz i trained bjj and boxing. boxing is much more difficult to master and much more skillful art. bjj is not. bjj is very simple and easy to learn. its practically worthless for me to learn it because i can learn it as easy as i did by watching vhs tapes on them. boxing is very technical compared to bjj cuz bjj lacks science and technicality. boxing takes a long time to learn while bjj can be learned overnight and u can get a black belt in bjj overnight in 1 session.

Its everyones first nature to think that a boxer will have an advantage on that front. But, due to the different glove sizes, covering up would change dramatically, distancing would be a huge issue as well if the two are within punching distance, they are well within takedown and clinch range

The stance and foot work would need to be heavily worked on, in a way that is WAY out of the comfort range of high level boxers. A lot of work in angles for Defense and Offense would be necessary. IMO, w/ out grappling practice focusing on straight punches, and leaning away from hooks would be a boxers best bet.

When we think about Couture and Toney fighting we have to consider the fact that Brandon Vera as a light heavyweght would hit so much harder than the boxing James Toney. Couture took that punishment for 15 minutes though so I believe that Couture is in no danger of being unprepared for the power of Toney.

Sending him in against the Klitschkos would be like sending a man to the gallos.

He's 41 with 80 pro fights and no telling now many ammie matches.........not gonna happen.

Some of his drills are pretty sport specific; just like MMA is a sport and doing some of these moves in self d or no holds barred won't be effective.

@steeeeker lulz i trained bjj and boxing. boxing is much more difficult to master and much more skillful art. bjj is not. bjj is very simple and easy to learn. its practically worthless for me to learn it because i can learn it as easy as i did by watching vhs tapes on them. boxing is very technical compared to bjj cuz bjj lacks science and technicality. boxing takes a long time to learn while bjj can be learned overnight and u can get a black belt in bjj overnight in 1 session.

Its everyones first nature to think that a boxer will have an advantage on that front. But, due to the different glove sizes, covering up would change dramatically, distancing would be a huge issue as well if the two are within punching distance, they are well within takedown and clinch range

@JaredReynoldsTV A boxer would have to completely change his gameplan to even have a shot at a mid level MMA fighter. LOL REMEMBER, I SAID MID LEVEL, so UFC is out of the question.
The stance and foot work would need to be heavily worked on, in a way that is WAY out of the comfort range of high level boxers. A lot of work in angles for Defense and Offense would be necessary. IMO, w/ out grappling practice focusing on straight punches, and leaning away from hooks would be a boxers best bet.

He got two eliminators against Sam Peter and lost, one eliminator against Rahman, and was given a gift of a draw. He then goes on to win a very disputed decision against a very low level fight in Danny Batchelder. After that fight James tested positive for setroids, again. He had his chances, and failed. Sending him in against the Klitschkos would be like sending a man to the gallos.

James ''was'' a warrior. He has been having trouble with mid level guys in boxing. I applaud James for his fighting spirit, but the guy refuses to train seriously for huge checks in boxing. Noone actually believes that he's gonna train hard enough to learn take down defense, kick checking and even a basic guard. Lots of boxers could make the transition and do ok. The second time he lost badly and got knocked down badly. Sam has gone on to not being a very serious contender since then because he can't handle top guys. Toney slurs his speech pretty badly which is kind of sad. He will definitely bring some hype to the UFC when he fights. I think him vs Kimbo would get a lot of media interest.
But he´s rather old and will probably fail to make much of a mark in competition. It´s rather late for him at this age to pick up wrestling and submissions.

@jyakin Penn uses basic boxing to defeat a lot of his opponents, cept that last guy. With the exception of one or two tussles on the ground it was all standup and all pugilism. Floyd is by far the superior athlete than soft bellied Penn.

You cant really employ basic boxing in the top tier levels of MMA. The gloves are not big enough for boxing's ridiculous D. The distancing is radically different and more active. And because of the wide variety of attacks and counter attacks available, you really shouldn't lay in full force behind your punches.
That along with Floyd's COMPLETE uselessness on the floor, pressed up against the cage, and lack of take down defense... C'mon I cant believe I had to spell it out for you.

@jyakin - We're talking two different sports. Would you use football rules during a baseball game? Well there you go. Elite athletes are elite athletes; talented world class hall of fame athletes. In this instance, the footwork and speed of Money would likely negate headlong tackles to his legs. And if Floyd, who makes more money than all top UFC guys COMBINED, chooses to fight MMA, he'd be ready. He is an elite athlete; Penn is just a chubby rich bitch boy.

The correlation between money made and actual talent is loose to non existent. Boxers get paid so much because there are more fans in boxing than in MMA, granted MMA is virtually new to the mainstream media, keep in mind we are growing in fan base exponentially, and yours is dying

@jyakin Athletic talent required to top an established global sport is immense; MMA isn't there yet. I'd love to FMJr. dropped on his head; but the mediocrity of BJ Penn? Compare the conditioning alone relative to their sport, their records, how often they show up ready for a fight. The "Prodigy" is a media creation to sell PPV. GSP vs. Floyd, maybe you got something, but BJ Penn is a retard. Boxing isn't dying, it's actually thriving with MMA competition, as are all martial arts.

@jyakin As for hypothetical Floyd / BJ Penn in a clinch, Floyd is stronger than Penn; Floyd knows a million ways to turn around an opponent; having said that, Floyd is a third generation boxing champ, he's been slipping punches and doing 6 punch combos since he was 2 years old. Some of his drills are pretty sport specific; just like MMA is a sport and doing some of these moves in self d or no holds barred won't be effective.

@superninja13 Okay man...Bj Penn is a mutha fuckin beast. His cardio is always in question... But Its silly to think that Floyd would come in to MMA and dominate one of the best light weights around right off the bat. He doesn't possess the tools, strategy, correct muscle memory and development required, that these atheletes in MMA have been honing for years, and in some cases (penn, florian, sanchez, etc...) decades.
There is no question FMWjr has talent, but theres nowhere to run in the cage.
