Groups with existential crisis (spiritual voids or low self-esteem etc.) will create a popular mythology to combat this sense of worthlessness. One of the defining traits of a myth is that it is not real. This explains why the typical "thug" is a facade, a fake, an image and not a reality. In fact "thug" like myth, cannot be substantiated by reality, its survival depends on the reinforcement of the untrue, the unreal.

I'm a college student. I remember this specific incident after I got off the bus at the campus stop. I was walking to class and there was a group of black men(I assumed they were students and that makes this event much more sad). Mind you, I'm danish, so I can't really say much about how it is in the states, but the black people we have here where I live, all seem to adopt that same "thug life" attitude, and it only turns people against them.
