  • Damn... Jimmy sings the guitar part at the end....just like I do when I'm listening to Black Dog.

  • HOLY SHIT!!!!!!

  • something makes me think JPJ came up with this riff.

  • that bass'll make u shit ur pants

  • he has to have the same hair person as Farrah Fawcett

  • JJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJ

  • This is amazing to hear. Holy crap! Hearing Bonham is genius. This has always been my favorite Zeppelin song. Bonham's inside out beat is just simply perfect.

  • SWEET , THANKS , COOLNESS , AL

  • @Rawbeautyrecords i wish i could like ur comment 100 times

  • haha bassists have a tendency to play when others are talking. i do it myself.

  • i give jpj credit for black dog now lol!

  • F$%^ING AWESOME!!!!!

  • THIS IS CALLED MAKING MUSIC. Not something pre made, and pre written. Most popstars today dont even write there own lyrics and they are given pre made beats.

  • wow john paul jones was really leading them there

  • They're Human!

  • Very very cool!

  • Way Freakin' cool!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Plant looks like he's totally tripping... xD

  • the bottom number can also exceed 32, technically. you could have, say

    20/64, 20 64th beats to a measure.

I just don't see how you would have 5/9/11/13 as the bottom number because you can adjust the notes in the measure with symbols to say exactly how many notes you want to hit in a beat. You can go as far as double dotting, and even triple dotting notes (double dotted would be 1 note length + .5 note length + .25 note length, tripled dotted - etc.).

  • @SqueezeMyLemonBabe I seriously doubt Zeppelin wrote out the 20/64. I would say... They just were playing, wrote a riff, jammed to it. There's Black Dog. The amazing creation out of nothing. The more you think mathematically about music, the less creative you'll be. Just write songs. PERIOD.

  • @SqueezeMyLemonBabe

    Irrational Time Signature.

    Situation resolved :)

  • ...and for the idiot saying 13/12 is a time signature... you are a jackass.

The bottom number can only be a 2, 4, 8, 16, or, 32... the top number can be ANYTHING. 1,235,743,245,987/16 IS a time signature.

    13/12 isn't.

  • @Who2Are1You I think you should have done some research before scoring off someone. The bottom number can NOT only be 2, 4, 8, 16 or 32. It can be 5, 9, 11 and 13 as well. In fact there might be more odd time signatures I don't even know. Most likely in ethnic music styles. If you don't believe me and need a proof then go listen to some Turkish or Gypsy music. They often play 9/8. Another good example is Dave Brubeck's take five which is 5/4.

  • @guru1349 Okay. What is a 5th note? What is a 9th note... or an 11th or 13th note?? Odd time is when the TOP number is odd. 3/4 is 3 quarter notes per measure. 9/8 is 9 eight notes per measure.

Tell me where you get these secret 5th and 9th notes..........

  • @Who2Are1You About my first comment; I think I misunderstood what you said.Guess it's a pointless comment right now.But forget it I'll respond to your latest comment. I think my English is not enough to explain well enough but I'll try.Well 5th or 9th note is not impossible. It's just the number of fractions of a whole note(which is four quarter notes). Here's an example: 4/4 implies a bar construction of four quarter-parts of a whole note 4/3 implies a bar construction of four third parts of it.

  • @Who2Are1You So if you break down a whole note to 5 pieces, they are each 5th notes. It doesn't have to be 2, 2x2, 2x2x2, 2x2x2x2...

Again, I'm sorry about my first comment. Apparently I misunderstood what you said.

  • @guru1349

The bottom number can only be 2/4/8/16/32.

4/8ths mean that there are 4 8th notes to one measure. 4/4 means there are 4 quarter notes to 1 measer. 4/2 means there are 4 half notes to one measure. 5/4 means there are 5 quarter notes, 5/8ths means there are 5 8ths notes to a measure.

9/8 means 9 eigth notes to a measure, and 5/4 means 5 quarter notes. These are not strange time signatures, they are just how many notes go to each measure, simple as.

  • @SqueezeMyLemonBabe

It's rare, and I know it will blow your mind. But the bottom number CAN be something other than a multiple of two. You're not going to find it in popular music, but some contemporary classical music (works by Brian Fernyhough, for example,) contain meters like 3/10 or 2/6 or 5/16. Look up "irrational meter."

  • @pulykamell That my friend is called mental masturbation ! We had a guy writing shit like that in my high garage-band. He used to roll a joint in the middle of the song too - the point being is it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing and I don't thing anybody canawing in 3 / 10 ! Maybe Zappa used some of this I'm not sure

but I'm sure if he did the composition doesn't swing

  • @phase901 Seriously, look him up. He's quite a respected composer. There's a good argument for why someone would want to write a piece in irrational meters--it actually does look simpler if you understand what you're looking at. I confess, though, it's all beyond my ability to read, but that's because I was taught within a typical classical framework, where only powers of two can be on the bottom of a time signature.

  • @guru1349

It would be five quarter notes, written as 5/4.

  • @guru1349 This is because when you read music, they have dots and symbols which symbolize which notes should be cut short, and which notes should be held for longer.

A quarter note dotted would be a beat and a half, A half note dotted would be 3 beats. An eighth note dotted would be one 8th note + one 16th note, etc. So there are very many ways to manipulate time in a simple time signature.

most likely if you listened and counted out the beats, you could count it under a steady beat.

  • @SqueezeMyLemonBabe Well about that, forget everything I said about "odd times" like 5/4 and 9/8 because it was a misunderstanding that made me talk about those.I figured they had nothing to do with our topic.Wish I could explain my thoughts better.Well I might sound stupid but the reason I misunderstood is I didn't read carefully and I thought he/she was talking about the other number.9/8 for example. He/she meant 8 but I thought he/she meant 9.So I couldn't help but intervene :)

  • 2:09 For all of you saying it's not Zeppelin... listen to Robert's Plant laugh. It's very, very unique.

Compare it to the very end of 'Boogie With Stu'... same laugh.

  • Yes, this was originally a JPJ riff. Tricky timing!! Thanks for posting!

  • The sound is magic, pure Zeppelin! Whatever they smoke, I got to try it out it must be some crazy ass Kashmir, well, they got the creative and the knowledge too! John Paul, Bonzo, Page and Plant is way much better than all the braindead pop musicians today!! Agree?

  • JPJ is amazing on this!!

  • God. I feel like I were there.

  • the bass guitar sounds fuckin bad ass. the tone is sik!

  • 0 people are...wait what?

  • Lots of respect for such awesome musicians. They are admired by all musicians around the world and always will be. At least good musicians. Peace. Oh yeah they got really high too we all do.

  • JPJ IS Boss. Here Here. Great Bootleg. Where can I get these?

  • I don't know what I've been told eskimo p.... is mighty cold.

  • lol i love how jones knows his bass part and page seems unsure of what hes doing

  • @angusyounghero That is because JPJ wrote the riff and presented it to the band. So Page had to learn it from him.

  • @USAvictory2010 Yes...JPJ presented it but you can hear how they are all working on getting the final arrangements.

  • @angusyounghero Page isn't unsure, idiot! At this point he's got a lot of different interpretations going on in his head that he's experimenting with. Page is great at doing different versions/alternate takes on things. Partly from his studio session days doing alternate takes of songs.

  • BONHAM !

  • Rip it up JPJ

  • JPJ FTW

  • que sorte teve Jimmy Page, em ter John Paul Jones como integrante do Led Zeppelin

  • Bonzo's chops are so spot on... damn.

  • I love the bass sound...Led Zeppelin! Greatest Band Ever!!!

  • What time signature was it originally in? It was like 13/12 or something. I'd kill, or maybe at least be a tad nasty to hear that.

  • 13/12 isnt even a thing..

  • @benturki How can it not be? Any time sig is possible.

  • @trufflesmell well not realy. as there isnt such a thing as a 12th of a note? describe to me how you would count in like double dotted semiquavers?

  • @trufflesmell Exactly you cant you are wrong 13/12 is a recognised time signature!

  • @trufflesmell The song is split up into sections of 4/4, 5/4, and 5/8

  • @trufflesmell John Paul Jones originally wanted the song recorded in 3/16 time but realised it was too complex to reproduce live. citation - Dave Lewis (1991), "The Making of Led Zep IV" in Led Zeppelin: A Celebration II, London: Omnibus Press, ISBN 1-84449-056-4, p. 22

Pernickety enough? Honestly, you never get this rubbish on Grateful Dead pages.....

  • eu tenho isso completo em CD.

  • Would love to have been in the room for this. This is some amazing stuff, you can hear them working through the song...aaahh masters at work.

  • fuck!!!! where did you find it??

  • is this realy led zeppelin.. if so where the fuck did u get this stuff dude its amazing!

  • This is real. I remember this from a VINYL bootleg LP that i heard back in the mid 80s

  • The kings of rock in action.

  • Wow. What I wouldn't give to see this in action.

  • JPJ is boss

  • sweet...where did this shit come from?...awesome..!!..

  • Bootlegs.

  • this is awesome ive always wanted to hear something like this..... also,i love ur profle pic lol that looks like some really good weed

  • I wish they would release all of the studio outtakes remasterd, like the beatles anthology, greta to hear how songs evolve

  • go john paul jones

  • You're right! He sounds like he's driving the whole thing...helping Bonzo figure out the drum figure to play over the top of the guitar bass part which shifts time in the middle. Love these kinds of outtakes. You can really feel what was going on in the room.

  • These were four superb musicians and Led Zep as a whole being greater than the sum of it's parts. Rehearsal recordings show that even geniuses have to work hard to get it right and at the end of the day it was really just four guys making music. To all of you that play in bands, keep your recordings too. Terrible as they might be, you'll treasure them one day.

  • 2:42!

  • Yeah, this stuff has been out since the late 80's. Classic stuff..

  • jimmy playin his telecaster? what i don't understand is why they recorded the rehearsals....and how do the rehearsals become exposed to the public anyway? i would really like to know that

  • Sounds to me like they're still working the song out so they probably record the session so they can listen back and pick out the bits that sound good. Then one day a producer or sound engineer etc comes across the tape and thinks hmmm...probably worth a few bob this.

  • page has EVERYTHING or shall i say had, everything ever recorded. every soundboard from every concert, all his rehearsal tapes. his "castle" was robbed in the 80s when he was away and someone got a hold of a lot of bootlegs n tapes like these. thats where you get soundboard recordings of concerts and rehearsals.

  • This was a John Paul Jones riff. He came up with it.

  • JPJ is genius. <333

  • YEAH!
