  • This song reminds me of my heritage. I am damn proud to come from the kilts.

  • five prats disliked, probably brain dead, what do they want, probably the loud bang bang crap you hear in cars as the drive by nowdays when they get older they will not have no problemwill as they will be already deaf listing to the loud s**** they call music nowdays, they would not recognize music if it bit them in the ass

  • Nice but..... the dance is the reel of the 51st division NOT Mairies Wedding. The tune is though!

  • @nicholaevitch It is definetely Mairis Wedding in the beginning. Just read the description of the video. It ist a Medley with Mairies Wedding and some other tunes.

  • They tried to teach us a few traditional dances on the wedding of my friend, but it didn't look half that good as in this video...

  • is there a dislike crowd! seriously heard needs trimed! yer listentin to jimmy shand get a grip troops know what am saying! folk argue over the over the the colour of shit! get a grip my troopers get a grip

  • @Hayders666 bloody right . no ,more too sAY..ITS just bloody grea\t

  • spelt mhairi pronounced by the english as vari

  • a wee contrived if a can say so myself. too bad all the real dancers were strangled

  • This looks like a different reel! Are you sure it's Mairi's wedding?

  • @fomoore The music is Mairi's Wedding. The dance is Reel of the 51st Division.

  • Is it me or are the dancers not quite in time to Jimmy?

  • @yumyummoany - Please don't blame the dancers for being out of time!

Much of the video footage has been 'borrowed' from Corryvrechan just to accompany the soundtrack and has nothing to do with the dances (see video response for original - and loads more on Corryvrechan's own channel)

  • Didn't there used to be a programme on BBC (back in B&W days) perhaps in the 50s called something like the White Heather Club? I'm fairly sure Jimmy Shand's Bluebell Polka was the signature tune.

  • Have nothing technical to say. It's just lovely. 'nuff said. x

  • I do highland and have one competitions -- and i am doing this song for my scottish day in school ( I live in scotland)

  • Three dances are demonstrated: 1/ Reel of the 51st Division, 2/ Round Reel of Eight and 3/ (unknown) although I truly enjoy seeing highland steps done "correctly" when included in a Scottish country dance.

  • @saffibaffi you tit

  • is this filmed outside ingliston house, edinburgh? it looks greatly like it

  • @HRHStewartIIRegina - Much of it was filmed at Kilkenny Castle, Ireland as part of their annual festival - see video response from Corryvrechan for original (and the correct music...)

  • I thought this was the wheel of the 51st.... or am i getting my dances mixed up...

  • The people dancing are actually dancing the Reel of the 51st Division, not Mairi's Wedding.... followed by the Gay Gordon's. All of which have different music.

  • Och Aye, a wee dram of Fine Music from Bonnie Scotland. My Mom had several 45 RPM Vinyl Records of Sir Jimmy Shand many years ago. I remember this from when I was a child. I'm so happy to know that I'm a decendant of the Clan Wallace on my Mother's side of the family.

  • braw

  • I remember we had to do these dances in P.E. at School, this tune along with Dashing White Sargeant,

But it was much faster though, and more rough than what's seen here

  • Scottish music is better on a piano accordion with a full range of basses to give that rhythm

shands sounds like a toy it is horrid

Proper is a 120 bass piano (italian)

    those button things are rubbish!

  • @Therehasbeenan

I should point out that the full, bassy sound you usually get at modern accordion-led dances is actually a synthesizer controlled by MIDI signals triggered by the bass buttons on the accordion. I expect that this Shand recording pre-dates that technology, but the point is that there is no reason why you couldn't now incorporate MIDI into an accordion of any shape or size.

  • How come he didn't play a proper Accordion with keys?

  • @ScottishFiddleLesson "Proper"? :/

  • A beautiful song danced to by amazing poeple. I wish the people where I live would recognize the Scottish dance.

  • Wow! Amazing! I used to listen to Jimmy when I was a kid at my Scotish Grandparent's place.

  • That was Beautiful... Oh how I miss my ane folk back in the West Coast oh Bonnie Scotland...wish I was there... thank you for posting.

  • Wrong Jock I have always held the Scots, their culture and their country in high esteem, where are there more beautiful views than those from Mull.

  • Wonderful! wish I was a scot

  • @10SERENDIPITY66 To bad you're a Yank

  • Twud gladden yer heart, lovely music and dance.

  • Are you speaking from personal experience with puffs.

  • no ducky

  • @arrghgarry Lol. No, ceilidh dancing is normally a lot more rough around the edges and not so much about prancing about :P

  • Jimmy Shand taught my dad how to play the accordion and remains a much loved part of music in our family.

  • this is jolly innit?

  • Sweet!

  • "Marie's Wedding" is one of the tunes played here, and another one is "Happy We've Been A' Thigither" (together)

  • The dance is the Reel of the 51st division although the music is Mairi's Wedding

  • Nice dancing! But in the opening dance, the dancers are a full bar ahead of the music...probably just the video being out of sync

  • Please don't blame the dancers! We are dancing to our own tune :-)

    See Corryvrechan's channel for more...

  • bangin' choon!

  • very good

  • I wanna learn this on the accordion it's brilliant. 5 stars :)

  • That is not Maries wedding they are dancing. The tune is though.

  • Yeah - looks like most of video borrowed from Corryvrechan (Reel of the 51st, Angus MacLeod, Saxmundham). See video response.

  • up4itbristol, I remember Corryvrechan, the place, from that scene in 'I Know Where I'm Going!' - that tiny boat just poised there as they struggle desperately to survive...

    h.

  • The traditional scottish is always top of the pops

for me as I used to join in all the dances and got

great enjoyment from a good night oot!!!!!

    Kindest Regards Gavin

  • I know someone named Mhairi and my parents played this at their wedding to bad it didnt have the lyrics

  • Do they say it 'Vah-ree' or 'Mah-ree' ? :)

  • It depends if you are singing in Gaelic or English. Sometimes is Gaelic is a pronounced 'A-vaha-ree' due to Gaelic dialect. Hope this helps.

  • Cheers :), I'm actually from here I was just asking Scottishcutie which way they pronounced it in that particular case. In Inverness, we say it 'Vah-ree', or 'Mah-ree' if there is no H in it. Tha mi ceart?

  • LOL! Me to! I'm a Scottish mongrel! My Grandpa from Gairloch would say 'Vah-ree' my Gran from Mull would say 'Ava-reh' and my dad from Glasgow would say 'Buckie'! Only joking he would say 'Mah-ree'. My folks are going to Inverness on holiday in about a weeks time funnily enough! My mum cannot wait she loves it up there! She's not been for about 15 years though!

  • Excellent! I hope they have a great time, the weather is expected to get very good towards next week! Inverness has changed dramatically in 15 years, it's gone from a town of 30,000 to a city of 70,000 so a lot of the changes might come as a surprise - both good and bad! :)

  • Great playing, my daughter aged 8 now wants me to get her an accordian

  • Och Aye!

  • The noo! and not 7 months ago, at all...

    h.

  • tune look at - mag n bert

  • Makes me want to live in Glasgow once more. ??? Should I?

  • RARE TUNE

  • Classic! 5 stars!

  • Aye, that set brought back some memories.

Of gatherings in the Glasgow Highlander's Institute to Young Farmer's gatherings above byres with the seating consisting of bales of straw,(preferrably with the jaggy side faced downwards) and attended posh Highland balls. From Arran and Skye to points in between and danced by the light of the peat fire flame.

  • bravi

  • I love Mairi's Wedding but check out the video responses (or search for Corryvrechan) to enjoy our "original" dance / music combination for Angus MacLeod, Saxmundham Reel, Reel of the 51st and many others (all in glorious colour!)

  • Really good, thanks but i think this dance is amybe called reel of the 51st division although the song is called mairis wedding. thanks

  • Y'know, they have Highland Games in Austria!!!!

  • search for jimmy shand vs 50 cent "in da club" gr8 remix!!

  • Sounds better on pipes

  • Highlander1758 - especially from a distance...

    ;-)))

    h.

  • Yes it looks like the Reel of the 51st Division to me

  • yes it is!

  • Great to watch how Scottish Country dancing should look - perfect timing and co-ordination and nice to hear Jimmy Shand - my granny's next door neighbour from Maryhill when they were both young and Glasgow was dancing mad.

  • Thought Jimmy Shand was from and resident in Auchtermuchty, Fife.

  • He was, there's a statue in the centre of the town as well.

  • all the same big thanks to u and Bigmanio

  • ok Semio, ur right, i spot the gay gordons etc,,,,, however its a great way to keep fit, and last week a group of us did the seige of ennis to the masons apron n had a great time pity its bigger on ur continent than ours these days

  • The dance isn't Mairi's Wedding it's the Reel of the 51st Division. The root song however is Mairi's Wedding... but it doesn't quite match the dance.

  • great post big thank you, u got great taste Bigmanio
