@nicholaevitch It is definetely Mairis Wedding in the beginning. Just read the description of the video. It ist a Medley with Mairies Wedding and some other tunes.
is there a dislike crowd! seriously heard needs trimed! yer listentin to jimmy shand get a grip troops know what am saying! folk argue over the over the the colour of shit! get a grip my troopers get a grip
@yumyummoany - Please don't blame the dancers for being out of time!
Much of the video footage has been 'borrowed' from Corryvrechan just to accompany the soundtrack and has nothing to do with the dances (see video response for original - and loads more on Corryvrechan's own channel)
Didn't there used to be a programme on BBC (back in B&W days) perhaps in the 50s called something like the White Heather Club? I'm fairly sure Jimmy Shand's Bluebell Polka was the signature tune.
Three dances are demonstrated: 1/ Reel of the 51st Division, 2/ Round Reel of Eight and 3/ (unknown) although I truly enjoy seeing highland steps done "correctly" when included in a Scottish country dance.
@HRHStewartIIRegina - Much of it was filmed at Kilkenny Castle, Ireland as part of their annual festival - see video response from Corryvrechan for original (and the correct music...)
The people dancing are actually dancing the Reel of the 51st Division, not Mairi's Wedding.... followed by the Gay Gordon's. All of which have different music.
Och Aye, a wee dram of Fine Music from Bonnie Scotland. My Mom had several 45 RPM Vinyl Records of Sir Jimmy Shand many years ago. I remember this from when I was a child. I'm so happy to know that I'm a decendant of the Clan Wallace on my Mother's side of the family.
I should point out that the full, bassy sound you usually get at modern accordion-led dances is actually a synthesizer controlled by MIDI signals triggered by the bass buttons on the accordion. I expect that this Shand recording pre-dates that technology, but the point is that there is no reason why you couldn't now incorporate MIDI into an accordion of any shape or size.
up4itbristol, I remember Corryvrechan, the place, from that scene in 'I Know Where I'm Going!' - that tiny boat just poised there as they struggle desperately to survive...
Cheers :), I'm actually from here I was just asking Scottishcutie which way they pronounced it in that particular case. In Inverness, we say it 'Vah-ree', or 'Mah-ree' if there is no H in it. Tha mi ceart?
LOL! Me to! I'm a Scottish mongrel! My Grandpa from Gairloch would say 'Vah-ree' my Gran from Mull would say 'Ava-reh' and my dad from Glasgow would say 'Buckie'! Only joking he would say 'Mah-ree'. My folks are going to Inverness on holiday in about a weeks time funnily enough! My mum cannot wait she loves it up there! She's not been for about 15 years though!
Excellent! I hope they have a great time, the weather is expected to get very good towards next week! Inverness has changed dramatically in 15 years, it's gone from a town of 30,000 to a city of 70,000 so a lot of the changes might come as a surprise - both good and bad! :)
Les Français connaissent Jimmy Shand ? Je sais que tout le monde ici en Ecosse le connaissent, mais je n'ai pas su qu'il était si célèbre ailleurs aussi !
Of gatherings in the Glasgow Highlander's Institute to Young Farmer's gatherings above byres with the seating consisting of bales of straw,(preferrably with the jaggy side faced downwards) and attended posh Highland balls. From Arran and Skye to points in between and danced by the light of the peat fire flame.
I love Mairi's Wedding but check out the video responses (or search for Corryvrechan) to enjoy our "original" dance / music combination for Angus MacLeod, Saxmundham Reel, Reel of the 51st and many others (all in glorious colour!)
Great to watch how Scottish Country dancing should look - perfect timing and co-ordination and nice to hear Jimmy Shand - my granny's next door neighbour from Maryhill when they were both young and Glasgow was dancing mad.
ok Semio, ur right, i spot the gay gordons etc,,,,, however its a great way to keep fit, and last week a group of us did the seige of ennis to the masons apron n had a great time pity its bigger on ur continent than ours these days
This song reminds me of my heritage. I am damn proud to come from the kilts.

But it was much faster though, and more rough than what's seen here

Scottish music is better on a piano accordion with a full range of basses to give that rhythm
shands sounds like a toy it is horrid
Proper is a 120 bass piano (italian)
those button things are rubbish!

It depends if you are singing in Gaelic or English. Sometimes is Gaelic is a pronounced 'A-vaha-ree' due to Gaelic dialect. Hope this helps.
