Yes, they are. Freemasonry isn't allowed to solicit members. The potential member must ask. Rules/characteristics are you a) must be male, b) be over 21 and most importantly c) believe in God. Subs are due annually and if you get three years behind, you're "cashiered", and can't come back until you pay the arrears.

@ubertuber2011 It's believed the freemasons originated in England before America was ever even considered. Could have even been as early as around the 10th century or earlier by stonemasons who gathered whenever they had free time in the private rooms which were part of cathedrals etc (now lodges). Handshakes may have originated as a way that different masons could recognise each other when working on different projects.. Oh, then America was founded and dramatised the whole thing
