to anyone who may be speaking as if they don't think vinnie is one of the greatest drummers of our time, you have no idea what you're listening to or you have no idea who vinnie colaiuta is.
What I mean is that yes, Vinnie is amazing to most drummers... I mean for god's sake, he's my favorite drummer and my inspiration for playing. But Peart is great as well. His playing speaks to many other people as does Chris Dave, Brian Blade, Mike Portnoy, Greg Hutchinson, Billy Ward, Spanky, etc... That's like trying to compare "artists". Each one is painting something different. STOP comparing! So tired of petty arguments about who's best. No one is the best. Its just whoever u prefer, PERIOD
Again, I'll say it again and again and again to every person I come across. You just aren't supposed to compare to drumming individuals. You have no idea the impact each drummer has had on other people. It's unfair to say Vinnie is better than Peart in all regards because the point of music is the soul of the individual playing. And each drummer has a different soul and something different to say. If you're saying the same exact thing, you ain't saying nuthin new. Open you minds... Ain't hard...
Kids! I never read replies 2 my comments-I just delete-but 4 those who've taken time 2 get upset & write, understand I enjoy expressing my contempt 4 groove-meisters & dropping bombs on guys thinking EVERY composition needs a drummer working out a groove to inflict upon it. I loved Billy C & Lenny W back in the MO and RTF days but imposing one's groove everywhere at all times is just loathsome 2 me & it's immaterial 2 me how complex or difficult to play it is. Save ur athleticism 4 mom's garage.
Very smug dan - 'groove' has more than one meaning, it's another word for a drum beat, and also refers to the feel that a musician plays with. In this case i'm talking about the cross-sticking patterns Vinnie plays here.
If you say. Only I still maintain neither you nor he get it. (And for what it's worth, I was being contemptuous not smug, as I am able to appreciate how difficult what he does is, motor skills-wise).
Well, contemptuous AND smug, certainly. I get what he's doing, you don't, nothing wrong with that. You seem to suggest that anything a drummer/band plays is only worthwhile if it makes people get up and dance; i'm not sure that has ever been the purpose of fusion music
The thing i admire about this particular example is the musicality of the groove rather than it's technicality. It's a prime example of what Vinnie does best - subtle and interesting parts. If you only see chops you miss the point
'motor skills wise'...what a dick. Vinnie's groove and feel have helped shape modern drumming. Most of us are still trying to figure out what Vinnie was playing with Zappa when he was a teenager...and here's some egg 'dantean' making wank statments about groove as if you have to have people dancing in front of you to qualify it as a groove. Go to your local pub and ask your favorite covers band to play something you can clap your hands and sing along to...thats a groove right there.
@dantean Go dance somewhere you dancing fool. Some people think dancing and music go together like mashed potatoes and gravy. I am not one of those people. If dancing happens great. However, if you sacrifice artistic merit so people can have a good time and dance to your music (like most dance music)... you are part of the problem. I think your wrong. You could dance to this song cause the groove is there... that doesn't mean you should.
"You think this is good, you should check out Neil Peart!" Don't you hate it when you're at a party and someone says that? You automatically know you're both in a different universe. All you can say is, "Yeah, he's great. Crank up Tool!!!" Uuugghhh! Anyway, this shit IS the shit!
Poor Neil, he routinely gets bashed by any of the drummers on here that really PLAY their instrument. To All the pimple faced kids he's worshipped. just like Tool...OVERRATED.
Well thats a bit harsh isn't it? You gotta give credit to Peart too, he's great drummer, musician and person. Comparing one drummer to another never really made sense. Or at least it wont make YOU better. :)
Or you could just bash Neil Peart fans and not Neil himself. I don't know where is enmity towards Neil comes from as he has never once fucking said anything about being a good drummer himself, and always has been willing to pay respects to the greats and improve himself. That being said he still had a very big influence on drumming (specifically rock and metal types). Everyone should hate the fanboys, not Neil.
@kirk7524875248 OMG for real!!! excuse me if i am misunderstanding ur point, but ppl who put peart up there with vinny and weckl and BR dont hear what i hear
I was at this show. You have to appreciate all this stuff from these shows with Greg M were improvised (around Greg M's songs) Vinnie tunes into almost telepathically, with whoever the soloist is (in this case Abe Laboriel, you can hear him saying 'yeaahhhh!!')
This is some of my fave VC ever; everything he plays here is just so tasteful/musical. The singles at 1:14 are just the most perfect thing for that space in the music.
one of my favorite grooves and drummer oat.

U can't play like him or better. U r so new to drums four years. Look him up. Vinnie will rip ur ass when he's on his death bed. I hope u are joking.
ediot6969 1 year ago
wut. it is gud, but i can play things liek this and i have taught drum lesson for 4 years.
it is kind of good, but it is not very good, i can play faster and better, not to take anything away from him, but it is 2 out of 5 star.
YaqoHomo 1 year ago
@YaqoHomo
being able to play faster doesn't have anything to do with the groove in this clip and doesn't make you automatically better either.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
When you say "groove," did you mean everyone got up to dance? 'Cause I don't see anyone shaking their hips to this drummer's so-called "
groove." It's entirely possible I have misunderstood...or perhaps either you or he have. Thanks.

To make hard left hand accents and instantly go back into "in time/strong" cross sticking like this is nothing short of massive skills at work.
Looks easy. Cross sticking is labor, there's no rebound, it takes strength and this sure isn't candy-ass cross sticking.

The Bridge part of the song ( 0:03 - 1:01 ) ... OMG ... Vinnie was killing as always ..... the stick groove doesn't make me go OMG.. but it's nice
