wow one of my favorite arias i sang it last year in a recital- i wish i had heard this before simply sublime i listen to Price a lot but never heard her sing this
Love the seamless legato. Can't make a choice who sings it better between Ms. Price and Ms. Fleming. They both hold that high note in the end very well, not cut short.
I find myself, thinking the exact same thing. The person, I always associate with this aria, is Renee Fleming...but, this is the first time I've heard Leontyne Price sing this...and I love it. Such beauty! I can't decide which one I like more.
@Canbelto: Her voice is not overdarkened. It is dark. There are (or were) voices that sound like that naturally. And tension would have shortened her career. There is a video of her on Youtube when she was in her seventies, and not a bit of control is lost.
Beautiful! But for Rusalka, my favorite is Lucia Popp. This piece is best sung by a Czech, but Price sings it as beautifully as any non-Czech before or since!
I never though of the divine Price having the sort of voice to suit this aria. But this is really beautiful. The introspective second verse is especially lovely. Thanks for sharing this absolute gem.
@Canbelto1 Honey....?!!! Where do you hear some tension in madame Price's voice? It is beautifully produced and what beautiful vocal colors she uses to express this gorgeous music. Sorry but I don't agree with you here !!
@Canbelto1 It's not 'überdunkeln' but she's using/mixing her breast register, which gives more colour in the low notes and she has a lovely transitions towards the higher, crystal clear ones. And of course this is her 'Fach'.....
:'O great. the almost mezzo-like sound of the lower register (when she was at her best, as I believe she is here despite being nearly 50!) serves this aria really well. I will be revisiting this post often!
Bravooooo.... unearthly beautiful voice, how much emotion in it hides., She is the first foreigner, I hear to sing Rusalka, with all the tenderness and affection, what this role should have. Magic, breathtaking voice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She's got an incredible voice of course, but what a musician too....so beautiful. Long and happy life to you Leontyne and thank you so much for things like this.
this magnificent lady and Renee Fleming have my vote for best interpretation of this aria...you can definitely feel them pouring out their souls :] I hope to see either one day in this role..and listening to them will also help me learn this aria!
The passion Ms Price has for her singing shines through in this aria. So many wonderful singers, how lucky we are to have YouTube to listen to them all. Yum
@DirectrixM "i do understand the leggato is a bit stretched, because this song is already too needy of sustained lines of voice"
re.search what legato means. sono italiano. legato means link one line or phrase to the next seamlessly without break... that is beautiful singing and the main componients of belcanto
takes my breath away, pronunciation is difficult since it's in czech but she is so SO SO great in this, little vibrato problem on 1:58 but she is really one to listen and transcend ......
There is NO BETTER RECORDING OF THIS!!!! I've heard most of them. Fleming is wonderful with this, but CANT compare in any way to this performance. Sublime!
I love Leontyne Price, and her singing of this, one of my favorite soprano arias, is so beautiful that it leaves me mute -- it's very hard to speak when one is sobbing:) --
You feel the soul behind the voice in this song... - superb! You hang on every note - it is like a ribbon of milk and honey for the ears to savour. . . Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh
A voice from God! this Angel has song to me on earth and I will hear again in heaven, still an Angel. What a talented instrument she has, total control in every Aria she sings. "My Angel"
Dear Onegin65, You got the sound correct this time. This selection sounds fantastic on my speakers! Thanks for all that you do! You have great tastes! :-)
Brava!!!!! Sheer perfection. It is a lesson in singing a song with the correct style, and that style is the style of the "Great Artist." I could care less to hear some other singer try this after hearing, the "one and only," the "sublime and incomparable," the s"sensational and spectacular," Leontyne Price.
I have loved Leontyne Price since I was a teenager. Her beautiful phrasing, lyrical style and magnificent, superb instrument that is her voice has given countless thousands of people a memory they wont forget. This rendition of Song to the Moon is without doubt the best and most beautiful rendition from the heart of a treasure of a artist. Long life and God bless her!
omg, beautiful. I can't say nice things about this recording without talking about the wonderful lady singing. She is magnificent. I meet her on Oct. 31, 2008 at the first annual NEA Opera Honors. She sang with grace, and spoke to me with joy in her heart. Beautiful voice, beautiful lady.
What a lovely story. I've heard many accounts by people who've met Price, and their stories have always been quite similar. By all accounts, a great singer and wonderful lady --
I have two favorite sopranos (For very different reasons!) One is Maria Callas and the other one is this magnificent lady. I can't stop loving her and praying for her to have a long life!
incredible! so many seem to whimper through this aria but Price supports and fills every phrase,no affectation just superb full bodied singing! gorgeous
Believe it or not, there are two... Leontyne Price singing this aria in 1958 at the Hollywood Bowl, and Leontyne Price singing it in 1968 in Munich. :)
@AlenaKaut Indeed she does and her Czech background also gives her an affinity with the composer and the language. Hers is an interpretation that on every level is at the top. So then for me it is just the old question of who's voice do I prefer and still, but only just, Price wins the day!! Thank you for directing me to Subrtova....I have not listened to her for some time and had forgotton how lovely an artist she is and how much we owe to her for popularising her native composers!!
@pjdonagh Listen to Teresa Zylis-Gara. The very best Rusalka. Also a Callas -Lover. Because she could do almost everything. Lyric , dramatic roles and was marvellous in everything. The only soprano which Herbert von Karagan loved to work with.
@prince2000ful Not True my dear.....Von Karajan also loved Price !!! He is the reason she had so many European Triumphs early in her career before her MET debut. He loved her voice and her as an artist. Have you seen the Verdi Requiem he conducted with her from La Scala? ABsolutely Perfect !!!!!!
Adesso posso morire. Veramente incomparabile, indiscussa regina della lirica. "Zasvet mu do daleka, rekni mu, rekni m kdo tu nan ceka!" (Luna, illumina il suo luogo lontano, digli chi l'attende). Price non è la luna, è il pieno sole. Bravissima!
Chills and envy...wow; to sing like God's personal Angel. Amen. Thank you for my hearing, to be denied this music and her voice would be tragic.

The voice is so overdarkened an hooty. It is just badly produced. There is just so much tension in the voice. This is not her fach.
