no, all of you are wrong, LOL.this is just Woody Allen taking all of the things he wish he could be and projecting that on to his character in this movie.he's an ugly, old nebbish but he writes the script or has it written that this hot young chick is hopelessly in love with him and is half-suicidal when he dumps her..when in reality without his money no hot chick would touch him with a ten-foot pole...and this bit about the Nazis is that he's making his character out to be brave...he ain't.....

His general character is a satirization of a type but in this particular scene is is showing the impotence of people who overly intellectualize in the face of real world dangers. Their apreciation of somthing that mocks the danger is merely cowardess and lazyness. It is showing that they aren't connected to the real world or taking real responsibility for it.

When I was at Hebrew University I had a professor who had run the Jerusalem Film Festival. She said that they invited Woody Allen as the guest of honor one year but he declined. The professor characterized his feelings towards Israel as abivilent. He did send a nice new print of Annie Hall, though.
