My comment is this-they play great and it's interesting to note how jazz has in fact changed- dropping bombs all the time like Brian doe's here would have been unthinkable at one time- during bop and swing eras no one wanted this including band leaders- groove was the thing- whether it was bop or swing groove- now drummers often are encouraged to move in and out explosively- after all their not worried about people dancing anymore so why not? Tony and Miles started it all!!
In a time when most music asks nothing of us and gives even less, this reaffirms my conviction thats its good to be on the planet while this man is making music.
I have to see them again... I hope these guys come my way at least one more time. And I hope that after Wayne is gone, these guys continue as a trio or something.
Man, the first year he toured with that new Danillo, Patitucci, Blades band. For me he never matched it again--not after that first year or two. But it was probably the best band I've ever seen. Best jazz band at least. That shit...had me thinking. As great as the most classic jazz stuff in my mind. Right there.
What is this from? Is this a single video clip or is it from an actual recorded concert of his? I'd love to get my hands on the whole thing. Actually, I've been looking for a Shorter concert on dvd or whatever with his new band ie. this one. Does anyone know if one exists? Cheers and love it!
I don't agree with earlier comments that Wayne plays too little and hasn't developed.
For the past 30 years he's done tunes where he just plays a little, focusing more on the compositions and the energy of the band.
This is not laziness or lack of development. People diss Alegria from 2002 for some reason but the arrangements are novel and his solos are INTENSE, e.g. Orbits.
Also, he improvises on motifs, twisting and playing with them, so he's very spontaneous, not a lick-player
I don't understand what some of you are talking about. Wayne has a magical beautiful sound, and this IS one of the only best jazz bands in the world right now.
Why can't people just chill out and enjoy the music? How many of you arm chair critics have accomplished "musically" what Mr. Wayne Shorter has accomplished during his time on this earth making music? How many of you?!? Yeah. I thought so. The word "NONE" comes to mind.
I like what you wrote, certain people just don't understand how great Wayne is. And this band which I saw the last time they were here in New York City are utterly tremendous.
I think Shorter works well as the instigator, in a sense. He introduces new melodies, redirects the groove, and works VERY well with this band. This band is based very much upon intertwining their music, and it's not (at) all about a single soloist as he (they) solos (solo).
The trio behind Shorter is IMO one of the most reactive, creative and intense that has surfaced in jazz "mainstream" in a few years. There's a good reason why I say "mainstream" and that's because there are a lot of bands as intense as this one but they fall under what one would call "avant-garde". Perez, Patitucci and Blade on the other hand manage to stay melodic throughout their explorations. This demands an amazing degree of mastery, technique and good taste.
IMO, Shorter just capitalizes on what he's acquired in the past rather than re-inventing himself which would be needed to really shine with those guys.
No doubt they are the best right now.I saw them a few months ago and they played something that was so "other worldly" It was what would be best described as a suite that went on for more than an hour...simply astounding music.
Like I've said, the rest of the quartet is very good, but it's Wayne's music, and we all know he's written great music for a long time, think Miles Davis second quintet.
Is it magic? art is a beautiful mystery and no one embraces it like Wayne,
You're so right. I was telling a friend of mine that as a soloist and a composer Wayne has very very few peers in entire history of the genre. I live in NYC and went to Philadelphia to see him play because at 75 yrs old, every time Wayne plays live it's an event and I want to be there.
This new quartet is special wow! you're right when you talk about how right they are together. If you haven't seen them, Go!
He's my favorite musician, as much as Miles. They will never be another Wayne Shorter
Wow you're from New York!? funny world. I think you're right about Wayne and Coltrane, they will always be linked musically and spiritually. If you go on you tube, theirs a piece the quartet does entitled, "Adventures Aboard the Golden Mean" It's one of my favorites. You can hear Wayne on Soprano quoting some of John Coltrane's phrasing buried deep in his style. I hope you get a chance to see them play, you sound like a sensitive, learned listener, A real New York Jazz Fan!
There is no one like Wayne Shorter. I've heard those same players in this quartet in other bands and they don't sound the way they do with Wayne. Maybe it's the compositions themselves, maybe it's the very idea of playing with Wayne, maybe it's his generous spirit. Whatever the case, it's great music and I'm happy for it.
ohhh can´t wait to see them live.. one has to admire wayne for doing such innovative stuff at his age! something you usually do when you´re young and experimental
wolfman21, what do you mean free jazz? didnt sound like they even missed a beat anywere in the tune...and it got pretty wild a couple of times, rythmicly. If your not paying close attention it sounds like completley random music. But it is not. There is order within that chaos!
Do you think this is free jazz? These compositions are carefully crafted masterworks. The incredible communication, understanding, and interplay of these amazing musicians is what gives them a freshness. However, make no mistake, these are not a bunch of people thrown together, pounding, thumping, hammering, and screeching out whatever comes to mind, at will. Not that there's anything wrong with that, either.
What Wayne Shorter and this group have done is transcend traditional tune structure.
That is the most intense drummer I've ever seen.

As a matter of fact, this wasn't 2003, but 2001, in Vienne, France. Wayne also played there in 2003 but it was with the 4tet + a symphonic orchestra.
-> bteniswood : this is a french TV program called "Jazz 6". Unfortunately, it doesn't exist anymore.
Great music !
