It's special effects. They weren't trying to make it believable, anyway. It's just something they did for entertainment. Unfortunately, that's most of what "psychic phenomenon" is. Take Ms. Cleo for example, she had a disclaimer on all of her commercials saying that it was for entertainment purposes only. Surprising how many people don't pay attention to disclaimers, or think with common sense for that matter.
