That was beautiful sir! I'm only sixteen but my Dad brought me up on great bands like Rush! Makes me proud to be Canadian! You did a lovely cover, almost like listening to the CD itself. Please keep it up! It's inspiring me to start playing the guitar myself. (: Thank you, well done.
If you guys have ever studied Neil's lyrics, you know where his influences in objectivism come from. I'm no disciple of anyone, but I'm running a congressional campaign that will be based on those same philosophies. I'd be much obliged if you'd all critique my video's for my campaign.
PS I also put a few of my old guitar solo's in there for you.
The tuning is DADAAD which means that the strings which need to change go down a tone, except the G string which needs to go up to A. Some people have commented that the G string tends to break due to extra tension (and so they tune the whole thing down to C#), but I've never had any trouble.
This is the best version I have seen on YouTube, even though it is a bit too fast. Your timing is perfect and the sound is clear, but if you slowed down a hair, you'd be able to hear the hammer ons and pulloffs a little better. Very nice tone in your guitar too.
This is going to sound so stupid of me... But I am not certain what is meant by 'tuning up'. Does that mean that I tune my eadgbe strings to the format suggested? What ever it was, DAADAD or what ever it was? Sounds dumb, but I am just picking up the guitar again after 35 years and was curious. This version is super! I will have to check 911tabs for the transcription and then find someone to help me read it!! lol. Keep it up!!
Hi - you will need to retune the guitar to DADAAD. This means three strings, E,B and E all drop a tone to D,A & D respectively. If you look at some of the other post, where you might have trouble is in tuning the G string up to A as it tends to break for some people. I haven't had any problems but look at some of the other entries if you do.
That one part at about 1:40, where you play high, on a 12 string you can play that aroud the same area (on the fretboard) as the rest of the song, I gotta say it's harder to play with a 12 string (and a million times harder to tune for Hope) but sounds a bit better. Still sounds really good though.
Thanks for the comments. Yes, I agree, I was trying to compensate for the lack of 12 strings but I've started playing it lower down and it sounds OK. Would love to try it on a 12 string but dont fancy the tuning! Cheers.
I think I played it just a tad too fast and with hindsight, I should have done it "unplugged" or at least turned off the snare on my drum kit so I didn't get that annoying and rather tinny rattle in the background.
hey has thew G ever broek on you when playing or tuning up to the A? know what should I do to prevent that - its happened twice in only 5 times playing the song!
I've played this quite a lot and never had any problems. I know some people here receommend playing in C# to avoid breaking the G string but I've always managed to tune up to A with no difficulty.
Don't know if it will help, but I'm playing a Takamine TAN45C with D'Addario EJ16 light strings (0.012 - 0.053) with a 0.024 G string.
hey thanks, i may try putting on EJ16 strings next. I had EJ15 on there before and it broke, so maybe the light strings will be better. I also have custom light strings. .011 - .052 with a .022 G. may try those as well.
Doesnt sound 100% accurate, but it does flow really well, brilliant cover, and nice guitar :)

neither had I. I found a tab on this and the melody is very strange, but... it´s a strange life(son).

such a beautiful song,
pity you play it too fast,
it leaves lesser room for emotions,
still great

where did you learn it
jbrooks95 3 years ago
I mainly learned it by ear and from watching some of the other great versions in here.
I also found a great transcription by Michael Robbins through 911tabs which is spot on.
I play a couple of notes high up the neck towards the end to try to make up for the lack of 12 strings, but with hindsight, I wouldn't have bothered.
Good luck!
