From time to time it has been death to shoot a Royal Swan or Stag or .... in England. This was far from the only reason that my some of my ancestors left England in the 1600s, but they much enjoyed their new freedoms in the New World, and I still do. From a game management point of view, swan, like any other wildlife, need to be controlled to keep from overpopulating their environment. Whis is why a very limited and closely managed harvest is permitted in the U.S.
I have a YouTube video up on the wmhoveysmithsmith Channel on cleaning and shooting the East India musket that I used. This particular one was made by Wilkinson in England and although from Nepal is of better quality than the Nepalese-produced versions. My gun was hard used, but sound. I proof tested it before using. It was purchased from Atlanta Cutlery.
When swan have been on good feed, like the grain and corn they eat at Mattamuskeet, they are the best eating of all waterfowl - like a dark rich roast beef. If they are feeding from greens in the western U.S.'s alkali flats, that is a different story altogether.
Nice p42 musket! Did you get it from IMA? I know it's an East India issue musket, but what model? It kind of looks like an "F" or an "E", but it's hard to tell from the pics. May I ask how much you payed for it? Mine was around $550. What kind, if any, restoration did you do to it before shooting it? Mine seems to be %100 functional but being so old, I'm a little scared to fire it. Hope to hear from you!
Great video Mr. Smith! I got lucky enough to get a swan permit this year and will be hunting the week of Christmas for sea ducks and a swan. Very Nice gun to take a swan with, I duck hunt sometimes with a 97 Win 12ga take down. What does swan taste like????
Is swan tastes like goose or duck?
