  • drummer looks funny

  • SAGA,,memory:..BEST OFF =Y please let us IN to then USA! (as we mentioned several times ago) BUT - On the Loose Is the most Best OFF!We'll be becomes AMERICANS!

  • yes - i like it !

  • This version has the BEST audio. I'm thinking of DLing this just for the audio... just sayin.

  • Man - editing is everything. If you have no ear for music - can't determine WHY things sound good - then you might miss the keys to SAGA's impact: voice + keyboards + guitar: ya, Sadler has an amazing voice (no shit), and the tune is well crafted - but if you have a modicum of guitar knowledge, you hear how Crichton has to frigin' fight for every note (square wave vrs modular) and it's an exercise in talent versus horsepower. Yeah Ian -

  • so much better than the studio version, and look at the raw energy of that crowd, they are going freakin balistic!

  • @flyvibe71

    ..upstage, owning all, downstage!

German Crowd, they knewd about good music!

  • Strange the nature of success. Growing up in Toronto during Saga's heyday the band's music was definitely popular radio fare. My impression was that Saga was a modest success, certainly not as sought after as Rush or Max Webster, despite the proficiency of its players.

Years later I was astounded to learn of Saga's mass appeal in Germany, the market that elevated David Hasselhoff to the ranks of pop stardom no less. Strange indeed.

  • Saga knows how to made great Music and Lyrics...- not just 3 chords in 1 Song

  • Excellent musicians and singer.

  • @sLdGlD This is just such a well crafted number. Look at how the flow of the music just draws the energy out of the crowd. The melodies , the breaks , the opening elevation into an explosion. This is what every songwriter wishes to achieve. Well done Saga

  • Wow never got to see these guys live, I missed out

  • 2 years ago, my dad introduced me to SAGA's Worlds apart. At first it took a few listens to get a feel of the music, but when I did it was one of the BEST albums I have ever heard, since then I have collected every SAGA album. They are now one of my favorite bands along with Pink Floyd, Byan Adams, Boston, Genesis, Rush, Styx and ASIA.

Im 23 years old, born in 87. Long live the classics

  • @FalconFBDT64

Wow, you are only 23 and into this stuff. Rock on, bro. Spread that energy cause today's music has cancer.

  • I was looking forward to seeing how they played the insane keyboard solo. I had always imagined him playing just the lead with two hands. Instead, he's quite easily playing it with only one and playing chords with the other - holy crap!!! Amazing musicians!

  • great song but he didn't have to spew his liberal BS lies in the begining.

want to save the planet? never vote democrat again.

  • @wickedrums: I wasn't aware that cleaning, maintaining, and caring for one's home was a 'political issue'. Seems like anyone with a sense of responsibility would want to show some care for where they live...

  • I met Ian from the band in the early 80's after a Sunday baseball game . At that time i didn't know who he was. I happened to be at Marty Moran's place , the drummer from Goddo , i didn't know who he was either. Really nice poeple and a great memory from my early days in Toronto.

  • 4:15-4:44 = Best part :)

  • Forgot the instruments. The DX7's are not what I expected to see used in Saga. :-D I had 2 and loved them for a long time. Word of caution: DON'T buy one cheap without a look inside & an hour of playing it! Some are balky in power supplies (they may turn off suddenly or even have high voltage switches), extremely delicate in the aftertouch/velocity strips (may be dirty, bent or misaligned), plastic keys possibly broken & glued together at the tip of the individual keys. VERY HARD TO PROGRAM.

  • OMG. Here we are in Musicians' Wasteland of 2011 and there are NEW Saga fans??? There is hope for this world. :-D Progressive rockers don't get SPIT for learning how & actually performing with their instruments. There were excesses (Emerson's saber-stabbing organ) & songs that just had too much depth for radio. But when a group broke into the popular front, songs like Roundabout, Aqualung, & On The Loose showed the world there CAN be more than 3 chords per song. @ 4:24: guitar problem! :-)

  • who is the hot guitarist..does anybody know

  • a very good Canadian group..

  • different, fresh..funnyyyyyyyyyy i like this version,,,

  • i just heard this song on the radio today and i said "I GOTTA GET THIS SONG ON MY IPOD"

  • I just loved saga from the start...!

  • The last remnants of prog. I have Worlds Apart and Heads or Tails. Both excellent recordings. I love this ~ 3:40

  • The guitar tone is one of the best Ive ever heard live especially at 1:35 to 1:38. Simply awesome, this songs still kicks ass and I believe it was written in 1978!!!!

  • That was my first thought as well! Not even close to the original sound patch! A cheap Yamaha keyboard can do better...

  • The intro/theme was originally performed on Yamaha CS-80 using a string-type sound with a quick attack. This huge, horribly unreliable beast left their live rig in1983. Filling in here is a more percussive Marimba type sound on Yamaha DX-7. Normally I wouldn't approve of playing CS-80 parts on DX-7 but I think it works here. The sound really cuts through live, where the CS-80 could get muddy. I'm also not one of those that believesa a band should try to slavishly repeat their old sound.

  • @mfitz1969 Hey, works for me too.

You can get a DX7 for $350 on craigslist!

At the time, this band used to prepare their shows a day or more in advance for the set up; they were ahead of the time .

  • Ian was spot on like always though!

  • if you have such hatred why are you even here?

  • The best reply!!! If people dislike certain bands or musicians so much, why did they search them out on YouTube. Why do they waste time watching something they don't like? I guess sometimes folks just like to voice their negative opinions. It's o.k. I guess? This is YouTube after all, and I believe free speech should be protected. Excellent comment though, I've often thought the same thing.

  • Brilliant Stuff

  • Yep. I mean, this guys was world class already in his early 20s...

  • Michael Sadler at 4.23.....best singer/frontman ever!!

  • Germany probily loved this band the most.. got many gigs there

  • Probaly one of the best gigs Saga ever did!!! After this gig and Security everything bégan to get smaller and smaller and smaller... Holy shit, they still could fill places like that one! SAGA 4 EVER!

  • He has the most awesome voice ,in the same league as Mike Patton and Mathew Bellamy.

  • These guys can really play! The guitarist is a beast!

  • minibar62 you suck.

    Hard and long.

  • What great lyrics....great sound! The 80's produced some of the best music in decades and still resonates through our cultures.

  • The Greatest Rockn Roll Band in history!

  • Yeah, seriously!

  • this is my all time favoite.. im soo happy you posted this.. they sound AWSOME live.

  • Does Saga tour in the US?

  • Likely "(You Were) Never Alone" - or another song that was not released on a Saga album, called "Push It".

  • Push it is only on the German release and on the US the Song Thin Ice

  • Zebra! I can't believe anyone remembers Zebra.

  • the first 45 seconds or so of this song are just off the fuckin charts awesome. what a great riff.

  • Not only this, they made so many, the more I listen the better they get!

  • Awesome. This is really an underrated band that has stood the test of time. Glad to see their stuff on itunes sounding phenomenal 20 years later.

  • This song kicks some serious ass!

  • This song always reminds me of sunny Tuesday, June 19, 1984, near beautiful Canon City, Colorado, and also of sunny Friday, June 21, 2003, in friendly Pueblo, Colorado. Those were great days.

  • Do yourselves a favour - get a copy of 'Generation 13' and listen to it in one sitting - it will exhaust you, but it will be a sublime experience!

  • Saga IS a GREAT band ^^ This song is one of my favourites ;p it's just too bad that their not so big in little Norway.. ;(

  • They used to be great in Norway. ...back in the early eighties..

  • I didn't live in the eighties .. :'(

  • Excellent sound quality, very clear and then suddenly full 'n crunch at 1:31. A very good representation of Saga for the YouTube audience.

  • great performance!!

  • wow the music is so crystal on the keyboard

  • wow I really like how they made the music in the intro I never heard the intro like that before

  • On the Loose and Wind Him Up are two of my fav somgs to do cardio to. :) Saga is/was an awesome band, too bad they never made it bigger in the US.

  • "Worlds Apart" great album. Hi from Texas

  • Great song... great band... fan 4 ever!! But it really sucked that they cancelled a gig in Helmond (NL) in Nov. 2007, which took me a 3 hrs. drive. So thanxxx for that guys... NOT!!! :(((

  • LONG LIVE SAGA

  • Viva SAGA!

  • I took a girl to a SAGA concert that I did not even like, just to hear them play, they were the opening act, but blew the main band off the stage..Of course they didn't spout this enviormental crap!!!!! Man that song still ROCKS!!! Semper Fi SAGA!!!!

  • SAGA is one of the best bands EVER i love there music

  • Such high energy music, I love it.

  • estos cabrones son chingones.

  • GothMog. This isn't Awful. It is great. It is TIGHT AS HELL, and voice and instruments sound fantastic. THIS BAND ROCKS!!! Saga is SWEET and very good. Great Singing, Bass, Drums, Synth, Guitar, and MESSAGE!!! Get your head out of the dirt!!!

  • Awful? How does anyone sound over 25 years later when singing is their job? Easy mog...

  • How in the world could anyone think this sounded awful? Unless you aren't a Saga fan. After seeing this footage I couldn't get it out of my mind. This was an awesome performance; they sounded great! Sadlers' voice just soared towards the end of the song. I wished I could have seen it in person..ROCK ON SAGA!!

  • In this day of modern music, I figured the DX-7 was dead. Owned one in the 80's(hated it). I'm a true Roland fan, but the main keys don't sound the same like they were made on the DX-7? Anyone on what the keys were recorded on the album?

  • Possibly Moog synthesizers that were seen in the original music video.

  • PPg Wave 2.0, micro/poly/multimoog, yamaha CS80,

  • yeah they are great in Holland and Germany.

    I saw them eight times...........great guys....great music.

  • Saga's new CD is coming out this October 2007 called 10,000 days hence 1977-2007. I'm also saddened to say Micheal Sadler, the lead singer is retiring from the group and this will be their last album. aaaarrrrrggggghhhh!

  • i love saga since the 80s..and Michael Sadler,,,,THE BEST Gustavo from venezuela-maracaibo

  • This song allways gives me A HARD-ON!

  • Gilmore plays KORG now. They r still out there rock'n. Their drummer has been replaced with Doerner. Another great Canadian.

  • Yeah, like a guy said before, bigger in

places like Brazil or Europe. Like Rush.

    Fuck you Canadian radio.

  • Used to love this video back when it was on Mtv...

Man, wish it were on Tube...

  • great group. I think they are more famous in Europe than in America. Too bad, this song rocks!!!

  • these guys were great and should have been a lot bigger here in north america - they did ok regionally here in toronto. anyone know if there was a video for "scratching the surface"? love that song. good to see "only time will tell" is on here.

  • I spotted two Yamaha DX-7 synthesizers used by the keyboardist.

  • it's amazing how michael has kept his vocals dead on. typical singers seem to lose it decades later.

  • I know he's xlnt. Even after all these years. This is my fav Saga song.luvin' it.tube on! : )

  • classic song....never gets old!

  • WOW!!! I never realized this song was as popular as it is. I love this song and I'm happy that you guys love it ,too.I always caught shit for loving and playing their music never understood why. never, ever got it. My son (he's 3) looses his f'n mind when he hears this song. up & down on the couch... down the hallway...he's a trip.anyway.tube on. thanx again : )

  • Im always on time!

  • I *loved* this song as a kid, and hadn't thought about it in years until I heard it on the radio yesterday. Now I can't get it out of my head, and have spent the morning researching Saga online. I wish this song was available on the iTunes store!

  • IT IS NOW ON ITUNES!

  • Woo hoo! You've made my day! I just bought it. :-)

  • Great to hear you all love them as I grew up loving them. But trust me, if these videos come down, it's not because of them. My dad was the one that showed me the website with links to this and other videos. He thinks it's funny he's even on here.

  • All you guys talking about never having gotten to see them live? They're still playing! (I'm the bass player's son :p) They've got a show in Puerto Rico in August.

  • hey melodic, i have been a fan of your fathers band since the 80's. i was the kid that turned everyone in my town on to saga.. i am proud to say, so tell your pop i have enjoyed his band for a long time, thanks bro, johnny from jersey....

  • Can you please, please beg your dad and the rest of the band to let videos like this stay on youtube? Too many older bands are getting really awful about taking all their videos off this place - to be honest it's AWESOME advertising, especially for older or little known bands (Everyone in Canada knows Saga, but most of my American friends have no clue!)

  • If these videos come down, it's not because of them. My dad thought it was funny they were even on here :p If they come down, either Youtube THINKS it's bootlegged, or the poster took it down.

  • **POSTPONED ** 08.11.07 - New Collosium, San Juan Puerto Rico :-(

    greetings from germany : sagaplanet

  • Awesome Song!!!!

  • sounds like WHITE SISTER!

  • Yeah this is a great song, I also would like to know where to find the original video for this. If anyone knows?

  • The original video was on youtube but was taken down a few months ago :( can't find it anywhere else !

  • with all due respect, Rush and The Guess Who would have something to say about that...

  • The Greatest Canadian Band Ever!

  • Does anyone have the original MTV video for this song and also The Flyer?

  • i am also looking for this original video, if you find it let me know thanx....

  • Saga is the Pink Floyd of Canada and I personally Think this is they're Swan Song. Micheal Sadler can out sing the best of them. His bandmates are amazingly great musicians and unbelievably accurate in tune with the studio song. Hands down, Saga is the best Canadian rock roll band ever!!!

  • Rush get's top billing, THEN Saga.

  • RUSH, TRIUMPH, then SAGA. Then........?

  • Still a hot song - I never get tired of these guys. I wish they had been really huge in the States. But thank God for the days when MTV had a far more diverse and truly global playlist than they do now...

  • Wow, forgot all about these dudes. What a great tune, I love this song. Reminds me of my brother Phil.

  • What can I say, simple one of the best Rock tunes of the 80's. Great band, they just didn't give'em enough credit...

  • Thank you for posting this. This is not an ez tune to find. One of my 80s favorites. I wish he would have used the original keybrd sound. Gives the strut more depth ya'dig

  • Freddie Mercuruy crowd influence is there for all to see in michael repatoire

  • Maybe i've been in too many coverbands, but, that's the worst patch for on-the-loose I've ever heard... It's like tubular bells or something... yeech...

  • underrated awesome musicians at least in the US anyway. Love em

  • Brutal!!! Freakin' SMOKIN'!

  • mullets and digital synths! ;) 1992!

  • kickass baby

  • Someone removed the '80's video version. Someone please upload it, again!

  • sorry i have removed the last posting here !!!

( I have not any other "On the Loose" Videos (or from the eightiest)

  • This is the first record I ever bought!

    I still love this song.

    Thanks for posting it.

  • Great song. Never got to see them live either. Loved the music video for this. Haven't seen it in ages then I saw it here and it's been taken down. :-(
