roger's all right, after all these years; his words early on were very moving , to love these guys means sometimes it is difficult. syd, richard , nick, and dave were always wonderful people, and now roger is endearing himself again. let him be . we are all closer ,because they fought. love them all
While the band's manager mentioned some of the pressures on Syd, I think Syd had a good laugh over that old fart's comment of "Why is the music so loud". It's hilarious and the look Roger and Syd give each other is priceless.
I mean, what did this guy do when Led Zepplin hit the scene?
I think Syd was stable enough to make the conscious decision to leave the music industry. Whether he was happy with that is another question. I mean, whether he would've fronted Pink Floyd or had an amazing solo career, he had to have thought many times "What if..." during the years. Especially with how big Pink Floyd got.
Love early floyd and syd barrett stuff... the seeds, 13th floor, etc... but I've never ever liked david bowie's stuff... ever... no matter how many times I listen to it over and over... nothing... except the song Heroes is alright.
@EbolaReston12 Yeah. It's his voice and style that I've never liked. I'm sure there are many things I love that others can't stand, such as Autechre, Funkadelic, etc, etc..... hehe
I'm glad Bowie found Sid's being 'not quite with us' so charming. For crying out loud, the poor guy (Syd) was mentally unstable and really suffered a really ruined life. But Bowie found him very appealing. Nice.
He asked a perfectly sensible question, and Roger answered him perfectly. Older people couldn't stand new music because there wasn't a lot of noise around when they grew up. To us it's normal. Noone is right or wrong. It's just the way it is. If you weren't exposed to a lot of noise when growing up, you would ask the same thing.
Very nice video - and Syd radiates. Peter Pan quality? Hmmmm...think Bowie is a bit jealous. I'd say Syd was a genious. Ah, I love that short clip where Roger and Syd almost go giggling over the question why the music has to be so "terribly loud". Wonderful they were, Pink Floyd in the old days!
you may be right that Bowie was a bit jealous, but we have to say that there is one genious talking about another :)
Bowie made a cover of "see Emily play", released on the 1973 album Pinups (it's listed in the box on the right side).
Anyway,
Syd Barrett was a tragic person and I think Bowie compares him to Peter Pan to keep up some hope (for himself and us fans) that Syd may have found another place where he could be lucky...
Lol, well I don't think he meant "Peter Pan" quality to be an insult. I think it was more of a comment on Syd's out of this world nature. Sorry about the late reply. :P
or that peter pan is the vivid, energetic, adventurous child in all of us. The defiant, the boy that refuses to grow up and be boring like the late PF work
@BreakingGlass77 Same. I wish people thought more this way. Nobody I know listens or knows anything about Syd Barrett era and his solo songs. They constantly listen Roger Waters era and thats what they know. So, because nobody knows Syd Barrett I know, I say "Roger's Pink Floyd sucks".
The black and white clip of the girl is from the movie Nebulosity. I believe there are clips of the movie here on you tube. Very surreal like this song.
I love Syds Floyd. I read a rumour online a year or so ago about Johnny Depp playing Syd in a movie bout the Floyd, does anyone no if this is just Bull sh*t
The most significant line was next right after the cut off-- "But Syd Barrett didn't want to be a household name." (I saw a longer version of this). Nobody ever wants to consider that Syd possibly intentionally turned his back on a greedy, bloodsucking industry and would rather concentrate on the "He went bonkers" theory.
