Hey man! :) Very, very nice sound of your Screamer. I was just wondering how and what you mic it with? How do you record your sound?
I'm using a SM57 in the middle of the membran and straight into my Line 6 TonePort UX2, and then into Cubase. Haven't got this awesome sound that you got yet.. :/ Could you give me some advice? Thanks! :) Again, great sounds and great playing! Those at MusikSchmidt should hire you for some demos for sure!
I am also using SM57, half way between the the ring and the cone of the speaker. The mic is tilted (approximately 45 degrees) towards the ring. That, together with using similar guitar (Gibson LP Standard) should produce the same sound.
crazy i just test drove one this weekend and i didnt know much about engl.. and thought to myself man this is a killer jazz blues rig.. didnt even realize it was so metal capable.. and marketed as such... thing is amazing clean to kill
Had one of these briefly a few years ago.Sounded amazing in the store-super clean and medium to high gain sounds- just like this demo but "the point of breakup" sound for live was unusable.Changed to a fender twin amp-now theres a beast!
@Ibik The thunder and screamer amps are amazing. They sound great at all volumes, even the slightest bedroom level. You can set all the eq knobs at 12, and its sounds great. Hard to make this amp sound bad. However, I have ditched the Vintage 30 speakers in my cab and replaced them with greenbacks, sounds much better.
hi man, I've just bought a screamer 50 head, USED.....after many years do u say it's better to chenge the valves? It's very important, please reply soooooon! Thanks!
Hi, I am normally changing the tubes on my Engl amps, even if they are new :-). And if they are old, probably the power tubes are gone, and the amp is very quiet. I am normally using TAD (Tube Amp Doctor) tubes 6L6 ( the short version) and TAD 12AX7 selected .
@epicvsfvror under pretty regular playing, 18+ hours a week, power tubes change out after about a year, preamp tubes you can sometimes squeeze out 2 years...........honestly, I change all mine once a year
@epicvsfvror under pretty regular playing, 18+ hours a week, power tubes change out after about a year, preamp tubes you can sometimes squeeze out 2 years...........honestly, I change all mine once a year
Amazing playing! As for the ENGL, I find it has a large upper mid spike that may not be super desirable. Perhaps it's just the V30 for mike, but still not a terrible gain sound at all.
I have heard lots of top players in my time but your almost effortless accuracy blew me away. I was interested in one of these amps and you just clinched it for me. You should get ENGL to put a link from their website to your video. They would sell thousands of these amps! Thanks for the perfect demo!
Tell me, do u think it is better for me buying a Thunder or a Screamer, considering I love playing solo guitars tracks and hard rock from the eighties? (Europe, Van Halen, Whitesnake, Survivor, Def Leppard, Queen, Malmsteen)
Actually I did try the Drive version, the difference is that there is lead gain control instead Reverb, Thats kind of cool option if dont use the reverb to much, but I do :-)
About the tubes, I am using 12ax7 Highgrade TAD in V1 position, 3 x 12ax7 TAD, and 2 x 6L6 short bottle TAD
@koliok Did you really improve your sound with these new tubes? better than stocks? I own an engl screamer combo, really I like it, but it doesn't sound so nice like yours. What pickups in your LP? Great playing
Thanks. Which of these amps would you say probably does the best "classic" rock/hard rock/blues tones - (think: Fender 6L6's on 10)? I'm not that into so-called modern or metal tones which all sound like processed cheddar or buzzsaws to me. But I like a powerful singing expressive lead. I'd have a Mesa Lone Star but too expen$ive.
For me its the Screamer, especially the crunch is great and it doesn't have to much to do with modern metal sound. What I like most about those amps is that when you lower the gain, they get very creamy (with the right tubes inside)
Btw about your question about the amp in gig conditions. The Screamer has separated gain and master controls for the clean and lead channels Also in the master section, the Screamer has something called A.V.L. which basically acts like solo boost
Hey very good playing, 2 more years and I hope I'll get your level ! Btw, do you think playing some Guthrie Govan stuff is possible on this amp ? Jazz-fusion player.
Great man!!!!....it sounds awesome. I have bought one Screamer too and I would like to use your settings to try approaching this sound. Can you specify knob positions??.Do you use any additional pedal??...Which gear you play??...thanks a lot....
Yep...but the image is not really good and the positions can't be identified properly...maybe I'm the one with this problem....however, do you use any additional effect or pedal or do you connect directly to the amp???.....You sound really awesome ( first of all due to your skills, of course ), but it seems I can't approach that bright and sustain with my Screamer and my dear PRS. Any comment???
I'm not the video owner/player! Strange that you can't identify the positions, as it are chicken-head knobs :d ... anyway, a lot depends on the guitar and pickups, that said, it's lead at 1,5 o'clock, bass at 12, mid at 13, treble at 10, presence at 9, reverb at 9
@Sick1982 Thanks a lot I guess for explaining the knobs positions for me, its exactly how you write. I guess a lot of the differences in the sound comes from the way of picking and everybodys individual way of playing. The microphones placing during the recording is also very important for the overall sound. Normally I have 45 degrees angle and the position of the mic is in the middle between the ring and the center of the speaker
Great playing, great demo, great amp, great recording. I've just bought one of these, expecting delivery in next day or two. How did you record? Mic, cam, direct?
Pretty cool demo... great playing and lovely sounds! Have you also ever tried the Sovereign ? I'm looking into getting either the Screamer or the Sovereign as I'm mostly into metal
it isnt the amp or the guitar....just his fingers, great skills

Hey man! awesome skills... you 're really multi-talented.
I want to buy an engl combo soon.
I'm not sure which one is "more metal" the Screamer or the Thunder.
Maybe you could give me some advise \../

Thanks for the helpful comments. I don't suppose by any chance you have tried the Thunder Drive model as opposed to the Thunder Reverb?
Also: are you able to share what valves you have experimented with in the Screamer?

Hi, Yes it did. Of course, the amp still sounds like Screamer, but the tone is warmer and rounder. The stock tubes make it sound a bit harsh (IMO)
koliok 1 year ago
What are the differences between the Screamer and the Thunder combos? Do these sound very different?
philxyz200 1 year ago
@philxyz200
Not very different but quite a bit, the clean channel and the crunch mostly. Also the gain of the Thunder is a bit more.
