The story of this game was how Bill Belichick and his defense kept the Bills high powered no huddle offense in check. Bills were 10 point favorites in this game. It never should've come down to a FG. Jim Kelly was schooled by Bellichick ....They let Thurman Thomas have a big game but shutdown Kelly and didn't let Buffalo score quickly and play the style they wanted too.
for people blaming the kicker, it's not his fault the team lost. If the team put up more points earlier in that game, Norwood wouldnt have had to kick that one.
Why is Norwood seemingly only to blame? A 47 yard field goal is not easy, even in this day and age in the NFL. Ridiculous that he is blamed so much for the super bowl loss. Some people just need to find someone else to blame for their own shortcomings
@Bk6346 i never understood why this guy gets killed the way he does for missing that. a 47 yard field goal on a grass surface like u said was only 62 percent. no throw in the pressure of the super bowl on the line and i bet u with most kickers it drops significantly. it had the leg was just wide right.
the hold was fine on norwoods kick, and no you don't feel sympathy for him, it was his fault. make it you win, miss it you lose. thats how it works. he was a pro bowl kicker, make the damn kick. you have one job if youre a kicker, so do it.
The hold was NOT fine..I use to kick in high school...the first thing was laces to the goal post....Frank had them facing him....ball will travel to the laces side...the longer the kick ...the more it will travel in that direction...BLAME THE HOLDER
a 47 yd Field Goal has about an 80% chance of hitting in the NFL. 80% chance the Bills win that game when they lined up for the Field Goal. The team was obviously cursed.
@armadalevodka yeah still bas but that wasn't for the win, it was to tie, the real heart breaker was the drop be lee evans in the end zone...that would have won the game.
47 yards is a difficult kick to make. It definitely wasn't a guaranteed thing. The bottom line is, you win as a team, and you lose as one too. It wasn't Scott Norwood's fault that the Bills weren't able to get a comfortable lead, and it wasn't his fault that the Giants held on to the ball for an unprecedented 40 minutes. I think the Bills and the city of Buffalo showed a lot of class by supporting Norwood.
Give Norwood a break he was attempting a 47 yarder he had only made 2 of those all season at the BEGINNING of the season y'all really can't expect him to have made that
I so agree with you Fitness...I use to kick in high school...the first thing was laces to the goal post....Frank had them facing him....ball will travel to the laces side...the longer the kick ...the more it will travel in that direction...BLAME THE HOLDER
Scott Norwood is the only kicker in Super Bowl history who has attempted a potential game winning kick when his time WAS LOSING. Also, it was 47 yards. Not at all a gimme.
Being a kicker is probably the hardest position mentally on a player. A foot right or left can decide whether you are a hero or the most hated player by the fans
Man those Giant teams were great back then..Being a Niner fan those regular season games against the Giants were the Super Bowl.Bill Parcels was the only head coach that could throw a wrench in the West Coast offence machine back then.
Norwood attempted suicide over this. He went home, took out his gun, placed it against the side of his head, and pulled the trigger. Fortunately for Norwood, the bullet was wide right.
@BettorOffSingle OMG! I started to read this (your) comment and began to feel such sympathy for the poor bastard....and then before the punch line--as soon as you mentioned bullet--I knew what was coming. lol. I'm from the buffalo area...too. fucking sad ;)
@meetdiamond I was a HUGE Gians fan at the time, but had made a ton of money betting the Bills that season. They scored three touchdowns in 1:07 against Denver and I thought "only champions do that." They were 10-1-1 against the spread after that. I then bet them in the playoffs, and liked them here. I was laying 6.5 points in the Super Bowl so it was lost anyway. Yeah, the first suicide joke was Buckner, who ran in front of a bus, but fortunately it went through his legs.
ray finkle was sent to a mental institution called shady acres in tampa and then went on to take the identity of a missing hiker in a diabolical scheme to frame dan marino who would be blamed for the entire thing!!!!! ace ventura pet detective
That is not an easy field goal for anyone to kick. A 47 yard field on a grassy field with basically no grip is difficult even for the best kickers, and Scott Norwood was a Pro Bowl kicker and he won a lot of important games for the Bills, it's just unfortunate he's always remembered for Wide Right. Adam Vinaterri kicked the two game winning field goals for th Patriot on Turf and both in domed stadiums. Scott was playing outside on grass field that wasn't very durable.
Note the hold at 0:06: the laces pointing toward the kicker. A cardinal sin by the holder Frank Reich. The ignominy falls on the holder inasmuch as the kicker, here. Probably more so. An excellent effort by Norwood, esp. considering the pressure of the situation & the fact that he had never kicked one successfully from this distance on grass in his career. (The Bills' Rich Stadium is covered of course with the ever-dreaded career-killing Astroturf.)
The Bills were a better team than the Giants but on that day, the Giants did everything right. Controlled the clock and that the biggest thing the clock. 40 Minutes for the Giants compared to 19 minutes. If it was lets 35 to 25 the Bills when that Super Bowl. That plus the 3rd down by Ingram killed it for the Bills. Too bad they didn't have Steve Christie 2 earlier( he was in college) because if they had him then that kick goes through.
@nolen89 dude thats a 50yard FG. with thepressure and the field turf and the laces turned his side, thats a kick that is difficult for any kicker in history.

But I guess that's kind of like saying Benedict Arnold was a great general (which he was) until he committed treason.
@JohnnyBoyMagic Maybe its because I have friends who are Vikings fans and oh boy, they know what disappointments are.I was more aware of our dynasty SB than the 4th one,I guess. Our dynasty win I was excited as fuck.4th one excited yes,but not as much.
@JohnnyBoyMagic Wow,Really ? Im Pats fan,but that wasn't that bad.Come on now, many franchises die to get one SB in 30-40 years and we were a dynasty.Sounds like spoiled more than feeling bad.And as long as we have #12,we're not away from 4th SB.
@JohnnyBoyMagic deffinitly the pats going 18 and 1...that was the most devestating feeling ive ever had watching a sports even in 15 years of being a sports fan
Forget about Scott Norwood's wide right FG attempt. that ain't shit!! how about the fact the Buffalo Bills made 4 goddamn Superbowl appearances. 4!!!! and loses all 4 of them!!! Im sick of people especially you dumb beer drankin', shotgun toting, Bills fans put all the blame on Scott Norwood, and all the blame should be put on your no clutch havin' BUFFALO BILLS for wining 0 out of 4 super bowls!!
"wide right" still echos 2 this day, even on the eve of the 2010-11 season in my heart....so if i would ever see mr.47yrd professional nfl kicker; i really think i might try that jaw....quote me "he could have been a LEGEND a HERO in BILLS COUNTRY" !!!!
Scott NorWIDE i had to wear Giants boxer shorts and walk through a bar,in the HILTON! cause of that kick.then it was 3 more years of misery.oh well i forgive you.
@UnionKid15 I am sure today till this day at times he sleeps and thinks of that there! This is not Ace Ventura as that was made up, but he missed a chance at their only superbowl they could possibly win and misses it! I am sure it burns to this day.
Funny thing is his kick in the 1993 "The Comeback" gave Buffalo another chance at the Superbowl

"The Jets have held their training camp in Cortland for two years; which football team really rules in Central New York?"
And below are the results of that poll:
The Buffalo Bills 53.67% (351 votes)
The New York Giants 35.17% (230 votes)
The New York Jets 11.16% (73 votes)

@JohnnyBoyMagic Maybe its because I have friends who are Vikings fans and oh boy, they know what disappointments are.I was more aware of our dynasty SB than the 4th one,I guess. Our dynasty win I was excited as fuck.4th one excited yes,but not as much.
God Bless the #12.

@JohnnyBoyMagic Should of been this one because they were outmatched against the Cowboys

No kicker would ever rag Norwood - shit happens, especially in sport. I can't believe you so-called fans still ranting about this.

gfscarface13 1 year ago

He was a pro bowl kicker and it is really unfortunate that he and the buffalo bills did not win that super bowl. God bless Scott Norwood.
UnionKid15 1 year ago
@UnionKid15 I am sure today till this day at times he sleeps and thinks of that there! This is not Ace Ventura as that was made up, but he missed a chance at their only superbowl they could possibly win and misses it! I am sure it burns to this day.

That's not a "gimme" FG at all. Unless you were somebody like Adam Vinateiri you have only a 50-50 chance of making that.
