@boltswagg while I was transporting my GSP from one tank to another and I scooped him into a cup (I don't like using nets) he actually jumped right out of the cup and back into the tank! it was a tall cup too! I was sure to hold my hand over him next time.
@boltswagg mine died.... i almost cried because it was so friendly.. one time i looked at the tank and didn't greet me like it always did.. it jumped out :(
Your puffer is GORGEOUS! I really want a green spotted puff, but sadly I don't have the time for a brackish/full salt tank, so one dwarf puff is all I can manage right now.
@MrGman0909 Mine was about 3 inches long, I think. I had it in a 10 gallon. Try keeping it in a 15, see if the water quality deteriorates quickly, or if it just seems unhealthy or unhappy before thinking it is too small. I think a full grown in a 10 gallon might be too cramped.
@Pop12646Okami it's freshwater and salt water it's like a lagoon. it's not 100% salt but it's not 100% salt I think on the gravity test (salt level) it should be between 1.005-1.008.
@mikeydude319 Ahh... I'm glad I didn't get one, since I have an only freshwater aquarium. What sucks is that at some stores they're all in freshwater. Would they die without the salt or would they just have their lifespan shortened by it?
@smallyellowdevil gsp needs to be housed in nothing less than 30 gallons per puffer and also need brackish water to start after they are about a year old they need full marine setup but you have to step up the gravity by no more than .2 points every two weeks in order to live a good healthy life an they also need to be filterd by atleast double for example if you have a 100 gallon tank you should at least have a filter that does about 400 gallons an hour
can you tell me a website for ocean salt cheap, if you know? How often do you put salt in? Is yours fully salt or brackish? Where do you buy snails? I can't find any locally and want to breed them when I get them, that way I always have them ^_^
Lol 10 bucks thats a rip off these u can get even at walmart for 5 bucks even less i got two for 7 and they eat anything from brime shrimp to the fish in ur tank
@smallyellowdevil you can just get free snails from wall mart get like 20 and put them in a case put 10 in and the other 10 in ur puffer tank i did this before and btw in the place you will put the extra 10 put gravel and some plants so they will breed and u dont have to bother goin to petsmart asking for some snails all the time lol
@kbee951 Yes, five bucks for a Walmart green spotted puffer that has been kept in terrible conditions, is severely underweight because they try to feed it goddamn flakes, and is likely diseased.
It's okay, though. They only sell to people who haven't a clue. People who do things like try to keep two of them together. I say that with confidence because anyone who knows any damned thing about puffers is going to pay the extra five bucks at a real pet or fish store, not buy a sick Walmart fish.
I had 2 green spot puffers, but 3 months ago, one of it jump out the tank, die~ [Cry] feel so sad... now, I wish to donate 'her little partner' (2 inch green spotted puffer) to anyone who LOVE puffer & promise will take good care of her. Regards, Karen (Selangor, Malaysia, Asia) karenz9@live.com
@aquariumStudios1 hi...i dont see my puffy eat..i have had him for about two weeks...i give him tropical fish flakes...are they supposed to eat that or something else? :( help please
this particular fish lives in brackish(freshwater/saltwater mix) water and will attack all crustacians and other smaller fish. its hard to get them to eat dried food(shrimp) but they will eat fresh shrimp and crustacians(snail, hermits, etc)
@paulaxa1 People commonly are misinformed about the water for these fish. While they can live in freshwater when they're very small once they reach about 1.5" you want to start bringing them to brackish water (s.g. of about 1.008-1.0016) and from their around 4.5" you want to raise their s.g to 1.016-1.022 ( or full on marine conditions ) ( If anyone would like to know more about them feel free to ask me in pm i'll link you to the site where i got my information. )
@eedee91 To answer all your comments that you wrote eedee91, it doesn't take long. I would estimate it at less than 2 weeks for a snail to mate, lay eggs, and the eggs to hatch.
Really fucking nice mate, The colours are beautifull, and its really nice quality! Because of this movie im gonna buy a bigger tank, and a Gsp! Whats your salt level? I had two green spotted puffers in my tank but I had to put a dividor between it because they ate several of my fishes. I went to the petshop to ask what they ate and they gave me the same food that the betas fish eat, sometimes they ate sometimes they didn't. i ALWAYS wanted this fish lol their so cute my mom wont let me get some.may i ask is it dangerous to handle them i mean comon their just little puffers not huge ones right.
@tiramisuAsylum It is not recommended. Their skin toxin is very potent and could kill you or make you seriously sick (i.e. if you touched them, then put your fingers in your mouth or handled food).
Really upset today. Bought a 1" green puffer and put him in with my cichlids. I have a 5" beautiful Jack Dempsey that tried to eat him, then spit him out. 2 minutes later, the Jack is dead! Was it because of the Pufffer??
@smallyellowdevil updated: Lost another fish. Male Convict trying to protect its fry. Died minutes after chasing off the puffer a few times. Had to take it back to the store. Not a good day for the original members of my tank. ;-(
@smallyellowdevil They do. All puffers have a mild toxin in their skin to kill predators if ingested. They have an organ inside that creates the toxin. This is the same organ that you hear about killing people who eat Fugu (Puffer). All puffers have this as a defense mechanism. Hence the bright colouring of puffers - nature's way of saying, Warning!!!
@smallyellowdevil I can help you there, I own a South American Puffer (6 years old now) , he's fresh. I also owned Dwarf Yellow Puffers too ( Asian ), they're fresh also.
I did have GSP's too, and I have to say they were the best to own :)
Mind you, three different tank set ups were a pain to look after, worth it though.
I've just decided I want to adopt two little baby puffers from walmart. I've been doing a ton of research on them and so many people are sad that walmart even sells them. :( They only say they need flakes, can live in freshwater, and then surprise, they die from mistreatment!! Poor little babies. Needless to say, I'm going to save two of the little walmart puffs and make sure they get absolutely everything they need to flourish!!
@DhBk88 If you do, be sure to introduce them to proper salt water very slowly. Premix some high concentrate salt water with marine salt (not aquarium salt - two different things), and slowly introduce it into the tank over a few weeks.
My GSP has this weird habit of tucking her tail in and shying away from hands. It doesnt matter who it is, she just hates hands! She's in full marine and has been with me for almost 2 years now. Anyone else see this?

only pet store close to me that gives snails away sell them at $1 per four...its getting freaking expensive...anybody have any tips on breeding feeder ramshorn snails?
That really isn't that expensive unless your feeding your puffers those everyday. They only need fed snails once a week only for there teeth to get trimmed down. Otherwise just feed them frozen shrimp, live fish, or bloodworms which are really cheap. Like my pet store sells feeder fish for 24 for about 2 dollars. You can also get shrimp pellets I feed them that when they run out of feeder fish or frozen foods until i go back to the fish store
mine just pulls the snails out of their shells. (poor snails :() i've never actually seen it but ever since ive got him all my snails were dead and there was only a shell left.
GSP require approx. 30gal of water each. However if you over filter your tank, you could get away with more. I currently have 2 in a 30g tank, an I'm rocking a 70g filter.
As juviniles, they're fine in a freshwater setup, however once they get older they tend to want to move towards brackish, (1.00 salinity).
They are NOT community fish. The only other fish I've really seen them get along other than themselves, is possibly figure 8 puffers
GSP are brackish at young age and need to be in a almost full marine environment when older... i would do you research before making arrogant comments
They'll eat anything meaty, but puffers need hard-shelled animals to eat to wear down their teeth. Not sure how exactly they will die if they don't eat hard shelled creatures, but that is what I read in a few places.
You can buy snails from eBay, in America, when the weather is warmer. They are pretty easy to breed.
I know the store I work in, gives away pond snails, because our planted tank is over run with them (intentionally). We give them away for free... some stores may sell them instead, but you shouldn't have to order them off ebay, heh.
Yeah they are different. These are brackish to full marine puffers and they are very aggressive towards other tank mates. They grow like 6'2" or 17cm.
"as in the end" haha.. nice!

The only other fish I've really seen them get along other than themselves, is possibly figure 8 puffers

hey question what kind of bottom are you using for you GSP? and is your water brackish or full marine? Thank You

@zyquine

...
GSP are brackish at young age and need to be in a almost full marine environment when older... i would do you research before making arrogant comments
koreaSAYS 2 years ago
Maybe you should do YOUR research before sounding like a douche. They're FRESHWATER born, an brackish as adults.
They CAN be made into marine, however naturally they are fresh > brackish.

can i feed them regular fish pellets cuz where the hell do you get snails
dontknow95 2 years ago
They'll eat anything meaty, but puffers need hard-shelled animals to eat to wear down their teeth. Not sure how exactly they will die if they don't eat hard shelled creatures, but that is what I read in a few places.
You can buy snails from eBay, in America, when the weather is warmer. They are pretty easy to breed.
smallyellowdevil 2 years ago
i read their "beaks" get too overgrown if there's nothing to wear them down, hence they can't eat and die.

I know the store I work in, gives away pond snails, because our planted tank is over run with them (intentionally). We give them away for free... some stores may sell them instead, but you shouldn't have to order them off ebay, heh.

are these different from dwarf puffers? and where do you buy these puffers? petsmart or petco? please help
Koreanlion7 2 years ago
Yeah they are different. These are brackish to full marine puffers and they are very aggressive towards other tank mates. They grow like 6'2" or 17cm.

BMF90 3 years ago
i meant to say tbsp of marine salt or instant ocean

I use Instant ocean. I don't do anything special to get its color like that - I guess it is just genetics.
