I like this version better than the Ventures. The Ventures, in the video I saw here on You Tube play it too damn fast, in my opinion. My admiration of the Ventures, btw, is second to none. It may even be that the video I heard of the Ventures may not even be at the right speed after 45 years.
I had only heard the Ventures' version, which is great, too. I didn't realize this was the original. Now, they're doin' some fancy guitar playin', there - excellent! It's got that big, spacy, clear, full reverb guitar sound. Nice! Regards, The '62 Mathew St. Band (1 Man-Full Group Retro)
hey - how's it going. Do you mean that you are one guy doing all the instruments? I'm doing something similar. I have a drummer, and we do all 60s only. I recorded all the instruments and vocals and we play to this backtrack and it sounds pretty good, I'm kinda new to doing that thing, though I've been a musician all my life. We intend to play out - is that what you do? Do people respond well to you being alone with tracks, if that's what you do? Where do you live? Jersey here
@80sVideoLord - hey, that's cool. Wish you two lived closer-the 3 of us could really crank it out! Check my channel & you'll get a better idea. Regards, '62 Mathew St. (Total Retro Rock)
Whoa!!! The long , far and wide influence of Dick Dale and So-Cal surf music!!! Along with Merseybeat, the Dakotas played awesome Brit surf music. Rock on!!! Funny thing was, several second-generation So-Cal surf bands covered Cruel Sea in the early 60s. I guess it came around full circle. An earlier example of So-Cal surf influence on UK music are the instrumentals in the soundtrack of the James Bond movie , Dr. No.
Wonderful wonderful guitar. Thank you for posting.

Is this considered "Mersey Beat?"

This is the very first version of this tune. Beautiful!

Back in the early 60's we had some fantastic guitarists in the UK.
Hank Marvin, Mike Maxfield, Mick Green, "Lek" Lekanby, Billy Kuy, Vic Flick, and loads of others.
Blues players included Eric Clapton, Peter Green, and Jeff Beck. A lot of these guys are still playing.
I hear that Mike Maxfield has been ill recently, hope you get better soon Mike.

This going to date me, but two of the first instrumentals I learned to play were 'Wipeout' and this brilliant tune. Magic stuff.

Nice instrumental. Great back-up and front band. This music rules. Love the Mersey Beat Sound or about any other British rock or pop.

This song was a solo recording for The Dakotas ( their only UK hit ) & was nothing to do with Billy J Kramer so I`m not sure why he`s name checked.

Quite right - nothing to do ith BJK! But isn't the drummer Elke Brooks' brother? I think her real name is Elaine Bookbinder
