that's not at all what he means. jailbreak is to run iphone of a different network i think, but root i know for a fact is getting full access and privelages to your phone's OS. This will let you install anything you wish on it. The carrier wants you to install only the stuff they want to sell you. This is how you run free stuff.

Android phones just need to unlock one setting which lets you set root terminal access on anything via the GUI
