I remember the LKJ songs when I was 17 and I smoked 45 joints per day and all of his songs were my head I was full of dub music, coming from him and I was so happy it was my best part life ( sorry for my english I'm french ... and you know ... french people we're so stupid ... sorry again ...really ...)
I first became aware of this song via the movie LESS THAN ZERO. When I listen to this I can see Julian reclining on Rip's deck heating his crackpipe. "You owe me a lotta cash an' I'm carryin' you like I'm stupid!" I'm learning to play Reggae bass now. : )
I saw LKJ play last sat night at the Spirit of voice, no band, nothing jus himself doing spoken word.. i'm teling you it was amazing, he had the whole crowd in a trance, the way he recites.. breathtaking!
yeah, they are the Dub Band, btw I think Dennis Bovell is the finest Bass player I have ever heard, plus he has a blast playing, but make no mistake, he IS the band leader and is key to LKJ making it big, without Bovell he would just be another poet.
Great video of one of my favourite songs from LKJ.
With the age of 15 I got my first LP,..Live 1984.
With nearly the same musicians.!!!!!
But no one of these young spectators in the audience knows really something about this band,..they listen reggae because it's hip to listen reggae,...the background is missing in their heads.
Poems were rhyming well before rap was called rap. Songs rhymed well before rap was called rap. This is Dub Poetry. He writes poems and recites them to the riddim, and uses his voice to bind them together, although that's not always the case. It is here.
Rap spawned after Jamaican toasters like U-Roy came about.
I borrowed the compilation cd "Independant Intavenshan" from my ... laid back friend once, and immideately saved the content to my pc. Man I love this song, and the whole album :P .
But anyway, can anyone interperate the lyrics for me. For example what does want fi goh rave mean :D ? Haffi mek a raze kaw mi come of age? (or something like that, lol)
he has to make something of himself cause he's old enough(Haffi(have to) mek(make) a raze(raise) kaw(because) mi come of age) and wants to have some fun (want fi(to/for) goh rave) ...that kinda sums up everything he's saying...moral of the story kinda thing..he goes on to kinda say it dont matter how you make it..rob, steal run a racket...patois isnt far off from english..its broken english..listen carefully and u'll catch a lot of it..as you did...Cheers...
Hey,..here I have now discovered again my favorite song of LKJ.
Twentytwo years ago I bought a live LP from a unknown Reggae-artist which I heard the same day in the LP-Shop,..it was the Live LP recorded 1984 from LKJ.
That day, for me a knew music century started,..I began to love this fantastic and cool rhythm. But here the trombone and trumpet misses,..but excellent. Thank you from germany. Mike

John Kpiaye -- Guitar. Dennis Bovell -- Bass. These are two very inspirational musicians. John's guitar work on LKJ's albums is phantasmagoric.
