I've been using the slicker brush on him primarily as it was more effective, but you are right, it is a bit harsh (esp when I catch myself with it!), and does not leave him glossy - so shall use his pin brush in future.
Their big old shovel paws are deceptive aren't they? I spend ages on his feet!
