This video is beautiful. As one who is investigating Reform Judaism to see if it is right for me, this video just blew me away. I am gay, and it is heartwarming to see gay Jews who are comfortable being religious and Gay. Judaism seems, I don't know. I don't know what I was expecting but I never knew how open and forward thinking Judaism is. Simply amazing.
This is beautiful, and I'm delighted that the IGB project is getting pro-religious input. But I'm disappointed that Orthodox Judaism was portrayed as hostile to GLBT folks (although the reference is brief, it is poignant). Many Orthodox Jews are just as troubled as Reform Jews by the idea that people would have to decide between being out and being religious. People like Rabbi Steven Greenberg are working hard to free Orthodox Judaism from its homophobic reputation - let's help them out.
@aflevy@aflevy I think you need to take Jonathan's comments about growing up Orthodox in the context of the time that he was experiencing his feelings of alienation. It's his personal experience and not meant to be a reflection on the current state of debate within the Orthodox community.
The music is a Brazilian melody that Merri Arian brought to the school. (She's also playing piano in the last scene.) Send me a private message and I'd be happy to send you a PDF of it.
A lovely testimonial. As someone who returned to Judaism through an LGBT-centered shul, I know well how LGBT people are weaving creative communities that are actively engaged in tikkun olam.
