Firstly, hilarious first 2 minutes. I know I told u this in a private message, but to have ur own website is key in the coming months/years. I think of mine as a base.
FINALLY got Encore and intend to learn/use it to host my vids in a dvd menu without the use of YT. A Myspace music page hosts my demos. Everywhere else - Netlog, Facebook, flickr, etc., basically links to my site.
Man, I feel like such a Luddite. This reminds me of growing up in Los Angeles, where everyone was chasing the latest thing and never stopping to catch their breath. Speaking of which,I felt out of breath just watching this video. Think I'll go fishing instead, less 'clutter'.
I love twitter so much. I think my tragic flaw is that I REALLY want an invite to 12 seconds but I did not receive one and now I feel left out. That is in my head and my issue to deal with, however. I can't work stickam and it greatly perplexes me. I wonder what Beverley would tweet?
Really like this vid, Phil. Yes there is an explosion of so many sites ...hard to keep track...amazing is the internet. I have been getting into the various ezine sites lately.
Oh and don't forget Tailcast and NING. I don't know where the hell we are going and how long we'll be there. I'm just enjoying the ride. Interesting and humorous thoughts here Phil. I enjoyed listening to you.
I'm sorry I watched 12 seconds and then forgot that over here things are longer :)
what I like about 12 seconds is i can check my friends page in less than an hour and because you only have 12 seconds, it seems to get some thoughts.
I don't get facebook or Twitter. I am on friendster but haven't given it much time.
Oh just in case you run out of 12 second invites, what i did was send myself one on my other email so i had 20 invites instead of 10. Yes I'm a cheater
That's a lot of sites you're a part of, I mostly whittled down my online activity to just YT (I used to post in a few forums too), although I do have myspace and recently facebook-which I only use to get in touch with old school friends, which is cool for a minute to hear from someone I haven't seen in years, but then I never kept in touch with them since school, and after the 'wow haven't seen you in ages' thing wears off there's not a lot else to say lol!
I couldn't agree more about YouTube. Even though I'm not posting videos actively anymore, I still love the community. One of the best out there.
I must say Phil, your take on social networking sites is not only hilarious, but hits the nail on the head for most. I haven't heard of half of these websites but I guess the social network sticking's pretty much true.
This was great Phil. What I don't get is the reason why only 12 seconds are allowed? Apparently Andy Mooseman checked it out and the reason given was that anything over 12 seconds was deemed to be boring. Check out his video Phil, it really clicks with this one.
I have accounts at all of those thingies (except 12 seconds - I didn't get an invite boo hoo!) but don't really use any of them - facebook is a total mystery and time waster, twitter is just for stalking the same people you stalk everywehere else!
I only have YouTube and , coupled with absolutely no desire to vtenture outside of that.
First/last time on Stickam I saw a guy getting killed, livevideo and the other imitators are a bit ridiculous, twitter frightens me and sounds completely vapid and as far as the new ones go, I'll let others try them out to see what they think of them.
I honestly use Facebook as a place to catch up with old friends and that's all. I log in once a week, if that. YouTube is my home, and I like it.
thank you for this post...i appreciate it because I didn't know about these other online social networking and I trust your thoughts...I'm saved from too much trouble...thank you.
I think it definitely is the case that people make contacts they wouldn't make without their PCs, but overall it seems to me the more time we spend using this crap, the less time we spend in more meaningful and engaging real life activities, especially social ones. I'm seriously thinking about decomputerising myself altogether. Nice video. You raise some questions needing raised. :)
Wow, I'm worn out just thinking about all of that! Facebook just annoys the daylights out of me. I dropped it because it just seemed like a way for more sponsors to get my email address. MySpace I use to keep up with family members and a couple of friends. Most of the rest is more than I care to mess with. But then what the heck - most people my age can barely email! LOL. Nice to see you Phil - I've missed your clarity of thought.
I think the best alternative to making friends and meeting new people is to combine real life and the net, preferably real life more than the net. Great friendships can come from YT, etc., but we do need to get out in the real world too. A nice mixture makes for a happy well balanced life, IMHO. Hope you are feeling well these days!
maybe I should just send you an icon of some money, that way Baby when you sitting around with your plant icons you can feel, not just green, but rich too.
I keep up with very little, least of all all the 'spaces and 'sters and 'books out there but I'm at least glad that you're able to keep up with the one thing that matters, Youtube, so that compels me to keep up with it as well.
I'm noJungleKiss on YouTube, Livevideo, Stickam, Vimeo, Blip, Sevenload, Metacafe, and Dailymotion. YouTube is the only place I know for quality subscriptions. The others are just there for me to upload stuff. Otherwise, I just ignore them.
Saw a facebook page where the holder had 780 friends. I worked in a dep't store for 8 years, the store had a mere 350 employees, and I never learned all their names. So I think we're watering down the definition of 'friend.'

I feel lucky to have started web design/development study in 2000, years before any public display of self was "cool."
Scripting is NOT easy and there's more to go (html, css, javascript, php, mysql, actionscript for flash, xml, etc).
Anyway, I'm rambling, but where are we going u ask? Hehehehe. That's exactly what I'm online to talk about.
OH and Xtube. You forgot Xtube. lol
