There was a girl I was in love with. Her name was Ingrid. She was Dutch/Indonesian. She was darker than me. Her mother never accepted me because of my skin color. Obviously her Momma did not know about me.
TOMMY CHONG , from the comic dual cheech and chong , wrote this song . when he was in the vancoovers with Bobby Taylor , back in the day . Tommy Chong ,being of chinese & white background wrote this song because of exsperiencing discrimination while growing up as a young man and marrying his first wife , who was black which gave him the inspiration for this song . f.y.i. ---------- Big Bassett .
I had no idea that this song was about an interracial relationship - Tommy Chong (Bobby's former bandmate and Cheech's future partner) wrote the song and was formerly married to Maxine Sneed (2 daughters: Rae Dawn and Robbi)
For a short while, I was actually a "Vancouver" Bobby Taylor is truly a unique and innovative singer.. I think I still have the scars on the inside of my arm, where he would pinch me if I sang out of tune.. LOL I'm hearing all these stories about Michael Jackson, it was Bobby Taylor who discovered the Jackson 5.. and I know that to be a fact, I was there when he brought them to LA! Where are you Bobby? You've gotta be at least 100 yrs old by now!.. LOL Love you madly.. Beejiss...
This is awesome. Was in Catholic high school then in Manila and i had this great big crush on a wonderful girl. Her name was Melinda. great big soulful eyes. It was great that Bobby Taylor had another hit song titled "Malinda". Double Treat. Being younger by two years I couldn't help but fantasize and relate to this song Does Your Mama Know About Me. Thank you so much for putting this video.
I heard this song for the first time recently on a canadian staion that plays all the old "underground" songs and fell in love, i was a teen in the 70's but absolutely love old off beat (for lack of a better word) soul/R&B from the 60's/early 70's, i could listen to this over & over, thanks for posting!!
My teenaged years were in the 60s. I loved this song then and I love it now. I heard it just today in my car while listening to my Serirus Satellite radio station. I wanted to cry, I was sooo happy to hear it again after 40+ years. Then to come and find it on "You-Tube. Thank you sooo much for posting it. This has been a GREAT day!!
No one does it better these days than the artists during my time.Thats why their songs and them last a lifetime, unfogettable artists and their music, unlike now, where they all sound the same to me.thats only my opinion,no offense meant.
I was listening to this song in the car before on the way to the supermarket,Brooklyn,nyc...all of a sudden I started crying...You bet this song brings stuff out...even my mom who died a few months ago..let alone the sad sweetness of the song itself...thanks for a great job on the song B.T,and thanks for posting it.
I bought the Motown CD's but I'm really like to get my hands on Bobby Taylors seventies recordings. I got one song "I can't quit your love' on elpee and that is really fantastic. Can somebody please release these recordings? There must be more than one good song.
I agree with dcbigpimp2k1, Tommy Chong (of Cheech and Chong) wrote this about his observances when he was in an interracial relationship. He was in the Vancouvers.
DAMN! This is really really really very good! I usually cringe when we check out a lot of these old school shows only to hear singers murder a song with terrible vocals. This blows me away; Bobby Taylor sounds fantastic. Next time you run into that Brother, please let him know that folks appreciate such a heavy slow jam! Bobby Taylor is the TRUTH!
brings back memories of the Spread Eagle in Shoreditch London when i was DJ and played this classic tune...I still get goose bumps hearing it...Times gone by !
I agree acluck: Music takes on a life all it's own to your personal reality & fantasy...that's why a song w/sad meaning can be a feel good song to an individuals aesthetic lens contrary to it's literal meaning...great song.
I think the great thing about this song is no matter what its initial intent was it open to free interpertation whether its race, sexuality, or criminal background...
Speaking as an openly gay man, I must point out to you that the original lyrics were about someone who'd just come out of prison - hence - Does Your Mama Know About Me ???
My name is Cecelia Kennedy daughter Emmitt and Dorothy Kennedy of San Francisco, Business and Entertainment since the early 1940's in the Bay view and Fillmore Districts. I have been trying to reach Bobby Taylor for the past last year. I wanted him to know my mother Dorothy passed away last year Jan 20,2007. 2413 Whitetail Dr
Bobby Taylor was the opening act in the 60's for Diana Ross and the Supremes. I was there and saw the legendary Supremes with Cindy. This was in Columbus, Ohio.
He is a very talented man. Hope he comes to Victoria on Vancouver Island to perform in the near future. He is a great family man,and cook, took good care of myself, daughter, and extended family in the early 1990's. Will never forget his kindness. T. Ranson
This is a good quality post. I have a great deal of respect for Bobby Taylor and have always loved his music...especially "Malinda". Many people have taken credit for bringing the Jackson 5 to Berry Gordy. BT is perhaps the most credible!
Excellent vocal control in this performance. Thanks for posting.
I had the pleasure of meeting Bobby when he played in Northampton and what a brilliant guy he is. The man has fought the Big C and won and it says a lot for his faith and his own unique brand of self help health care. Part Native American which is where he got his wonderful straight hair and he is welcome back here any time, a true Soul Survivor.
no offense but i like this version more than the oringial
