Banning handguns would only take away a tool that the law-abiding use to protect themselves from violent criminals. Criminals by definition don't obey the law and they will always have weapons.

Gun Control does nothing, except disarm the good people. If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. All those European countries, and Canada, and Australia, with low gun death rates, don't have to worry about cartels selling arms like we do. @fredjustsucks Banning all guns would create a black market if people felt they wanted/needed guns, just as they want/need drugs. (need in case of addiction). So really, it's not as much a cycle as you're saying. And guns are not completely banned in Australia. They are perfectly legal for appropriate uses, such as farmers maintaining their property and killing pests like wild dogs, and so because they are available where they are needed, there is less black market for them.
