When we were kids we had Tony Hart explaining interesting things to us in an understated, dignified manner and encouraging us to try creative things at home.
Thanks for posting this. I have not seen this for years! I actually made the animation included in this programme at about at 4:50 in the above clip. This brings back so many memories. HART BEAT was a great show to work on. :-)
@ExplainingTheFuture You're welcome, I'm glad to bring memories back - I hadn't ever thought I'd get anyone who actually worked on the programme commenting here :)
The little linking animations were always nice - what was that character on the left meant to be, a sort of... pink elephant genie-thing in a top hat?
The pink character was called "Fisherman Fred" as he first appeared sitting fishing on a toadstool in the 1988 series. I've no idea what he was! But I sort of got stuck with him. The other character in the animation here -- "Kate" -- was far more flexible (even if she skates through a box above!). Fred was totally 2D but kept being reused (I think 10 times in total) because everybody liked him! :) The animation for Hart Beat was always a rush, if a rewarding one.
watch right till the end of the clip peeps - you get to see blue peter, andy peters and Awald (sp?). yey! Thanks so much for posting this. It makes me happy and sad at the same time. CC
Oh... I just found out about Tony hart dying by coming here. He will be missed. All my enthusiasm for art came from Hart Beat. I remember in the 80's he would bring guests in to do art on the computer with a mouse - it was so new and cool at the time that it inspired me to get into digital art ina big way.
I cried when I watched this, my children and I used to watch and video every episode, we are going to dig them out from the loft and watch them. How sad that such a talented man has passed away RIP Tony x
I loved this program. So sad to hear Tony has passed away just yesterday. May he rest in peace, I am sure he inspired many young children all over the country. :) A wonderful presenter and art enthusiast. x
Anyone got anymore episodes? I don't think the BBC has them, I think they erased them in the 1990's to save money on storage. I think it will be upto the community to save what they can
Wow, this brings back so many memories. I remember trying to to the leaf picture using a homemade potato stamp haha.
Loved watching Hart Beat in the 80s, he was so enthusiastic and got me, and probably millons of other people, into doing arty stuff at such a young age.
Thanks so much for posting! Can't believe they junked the originals! So.. thank you for even more so : )

Wonderful stuff, of course.
But has anyone else noticed that someone was still, even at this point, standing up for Five Star?

So many memories - everybody watched Hart Beat - everybody! At it's peak it was probably the most popular programme boroadcast on CBBC at that time.
No frills, no nonsense, just good edu-tainment at its best!
So sad that Hart Beat - and now the late great Tony Hart are gone... At least we still have YouTube clips to keep the memories alive!
