Almost all SR-71 Reconnaissance Aircraft are now in Museums throughout the United States, having flown for 32 years with the distinction of being the "The highest flying and fastest air breathing aircraft in the worldThe SR-71 routinely cruised at Mach 3.2 in continuous afterburner at 80-85,000 feet. The speed and altitude of an SR-71 coupled with superior Defensive electronics has prevented any intended intercept of the Blackbird either by land based missiles or airborne Interceptor threats.
@Kambanicity The real task for firing on the Habu was keeping the radar lock-on, which on a target traveling at 3.20 Mach was almost impossible....THX
@elkranch I know that I am not saying anything about that , but fighters have locked on to it but never fired . But then it did not travel at 3,2 all the time

everyone who gave me the thumbs down have better of flown this plane in order to be so sure im talking out of my butt. because otherwise you're just as bad as me.
jerrydoubleu..The "MachCone" from the Habu at FL800 @ mach 3.20 takes about one and a half minutes to reach the ground ,coalesceing into a overpressure Bar of about 0.9..the Concorde @mach2.00@ FL500 had a Bar of 1.14and the Space Shuttle at FL800 @Mach4 has a Bar at ground level of 1.25,=1.25 over normal Barometeric pressure... the Habu did sound like a "slight rumble" the Habu at FL600 had a "Cone Carpet" about 1 mile wide, the A/C would be 50miles ahead of the sonic cone when heard...THX
I don't think so, but u sure try hard... just the other day the shuttle landed in CA and the boom shook the post office bldg so hard, I thought someone drove into it, until i remembered the news of landing. BTWW I used to work where the SR used to take off, and on afterburner the engines were the loudest. THX for your input.
jerrydoubleu..Most overpressure happens at the moment of Mach1.00-1.30 ,after that overpressure ,increases are very slight, its the intinal first break of air molecules where the greatest overpressure happens, supersonic jets at 100 ft can create pressures of 20-145+BARS but from reading elkranch comments, they are pretty much right-on,hearing the Habu at speed and altitude does sound like distance thunder....J-58 sound frequency at take off, is very different from a sonic overpressure"booming.
In 1974 during the speed run from London to L.A., during the dece start after the timing gates, the, Habu was low enough and fast enough, to blow out some windows in a house in BelAir that Howard Hughes built in the 1930's,then owned by Elvis Presley and sold to ZsaZsa Gabor weeks before the incident, overpressure increases with a decrease in altitude for a given speed.
E8F9G0, I don't know the latest science behind sonic booms. I do wonder how come you feel so strongly @ the subject. I do remember a group of people who worked on delta wing supersonic plane designs like Concord that in the end were never built bc of public resistence to noise pollution. Really tho, I was just making a fun comment.
edstar83---And you sir are uneducated on the SR-71,but my mind is open, so what is your proof that the SR-71 top speed can'nt be figured from the Dash-1 flight envelopes??specific claims and comments like yours, need specific proof..not opinions used as evidence to back up your comments.a belief isn't a proof for techincal aspects of A/C performance.
i never said i flown anything. I just dont believe what the government says. they have a lot of secrets. but sheep dont ask questions they line up for the slaughter.
edstar83...You're talking nonsense..do a little research....look up the SR-71 Dash-1 read and run the performance envelops you'll find the Habu top possible speed under perfect conditions was Mach 3.50...end of story...
I laugh at these people who say "Oh well there are faster planes today" yeah, barely! It's taken over 40 years for anything to come close to duplicating the SR 71 capabilities.
The SR-71 remains the fastest JET on the record books (unless there is some top secret plane which is faster). There have been some faster aircraft but they are/were powered by rockets.
the SR-71 is very fast but if you want to check out a plane that ran circles around it with a top speed set of mach 6.7 check out the X-15 experimental rocket airplane which is actually older than the SR-71
But, by definition of "plane" the X-15 isn't one. A plane is a vehicle which can take off and land under its own power. Now, wehile yes the X-15 kicked ass, it is not a plane. It's a "rocket with razor blades for wings".
one thing that this plane can lay claim to,is that it was never, never, never intercepted.the best that the USSR had could'nt touch this plane.Mig 25? i don't think so.

what was there to 'lock-on' to? by the time it happened
it was long gone.

This was not a war plane. It was not armed in any manner-not even a gun. It just carried a camera.

Strictly reconnaissance missions....
