Ring test! Start with coins you know to be silver and cupro-nickel. Balance the coin on your index finger and ding it with another coin. Silver has a deeper tone that rings for a long while. Cupro-nickel attenuates quickly. It's not 100% accurate, but it's a quick and dirty way of finding out on the spot. A scale and knowledge of expected weight is better, then of course the acid test -- but who will let you do that on the spot? :)
