Cool, aloof, gorgeous and super talented! No frills, the song stands up on its own and screams 60's Britain and Carnaby Street....I was born too late to really appreciate the era but its good to be able to revisit the time on YouTube.
Logging in from Wellington, New Zealand. This was released by PYE Records in may 1965 when I was just 19. Sandie was and still is my secret love and there could never be any other bare footed girl who could sound like her. She's the best.
This is a rehearsal tape for Top of the Pops with Pete Murray (the presenter) floating into the picture. No wonder Sandie looks bored she's just walking through the camera shots and the audience hasn't arrived.
Sandie had a pleasant voice and the looks of a super model. Infact she was better looking than most super models. But I wonder why she looks so pensive in this video.
Good morning, do you like sixties? Listen and pod cast my program " great sound of 60' s " on the site plumfm. Greeting and made blooper in rock and roll.

Sandie Shaw sang at our college May ball in 1968. I was prepared to be underwhelmed based on the TV coverage she'd had, but she was absolutely great. One of the best I've ever seen.
i read all well most of your comments ..sandie never really smiled much in her videos that was just sweet sandie hey ! she is a lovely lady .....
i tell you some thing k back in the 70's i was at top of the pops in london ( its a music studio at the bbc t.v ...and i was making faces at sandie when she was singer and not one time did she smile but after she sent me a msg and said i was funny ! and she was loughing in side and said pls thank that young man ....
Flip, how sad she had to conform with the requirements of the day when singing this song. I bet she would have loved to have danced and showed that love was worth preservation poor thing!! I would have danced in a quietly provacative way to prove a point here. LONG LIVE LOVE!! yep and I will keeep dancing to this tune HOOOORAAAY!!!
kinkkenny is joking surely.. Sandie Shaw is amazing and beautiful but better than Dusty ha ha she is not even in the same league as Dusty Springfield. Dusty was the greatest ever soul singer in the UK..Sandy Shaw sang bubble gum music. A front runner for the Spice Girls if you like
@TractorBoy50 I agree. Dusty Springfield cannot be compared to Sandie Shaw because they *were* two different styles of singer, two different types of music. Irrespective of who we think is *better* though, it certainly goes without saying that all music from this era is waaaaay better than the sort of crap we have to listen to today!
Hi. Nice to see this video again but I do wish you'd inform people that this is a camera rehearsal for 'Top of the Pops'.
Not doing so leaves Sandie open to all the (horrible) accusations that she's miserable and surly. All that is required of her here is that she demonstrates where she will be standing & moving to.
The man who the camera cuts to is DJ & presenter Pete Murray. x
sorry to disappoint you but this is not live : she's miming -it's a rehersal for Top of the Pops - a BBC programme in the 60's, thus making this the original "version" since she's miming to the single(which went straight to number 1);the actual performance was wiped out-she was wearing a white dress with flowers on her hair- absolutely D I V I N E and bloody sexy too!But there is alive version of Long Live Love on you tube- she's wearind a trouser outfit and her hair is darker
Well you are right, but she's not putting anything into this performance because it's a camera rehearsal for Top Of The Pops (Xmas special 1965) and was never meant to be seen. That's why there's no audience there, but the camera still cuts away to show the studio floor ( 1:26 )
I can state without fear of contradiction, Sandy Shaw (with or without shoes) is a more talented Singer than Cilla, Lulu, Dusty, and anyone else from that era put together. Sandy, Baby you are the Mutts Nuts.
Sandie gets the number two spot when it comes to Brit pop singers from me. No pop singer - British or otherwise is better than Dusty Springfield in my opinion.
yes she's great but Helen Shapirio was the greatest of them all and she was just 14 Not many have the power that she had ,yes Dusty was very special as was Pet Clark but the girl from East London had more power in her voice
@kinkkenny She's certainly the prettiest, but it's useless (and unfair) to say one musician is more talented than another. Music is about creativity, not talent.
In this video she mostly just stands there and looks bored, as if she has better things to be doing.
I'm not trying to bash her though, I quite like her, and she's so damn beautiful.
@kinkkenny I Will contradict you; Sandie sings quite stiffly and with no emotion. Are you kidding me? Dusty had great vocals and great stage presence. No Comparison!!!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I have never understood the enduring appeal of this plain little Essex shop girl who stares in a bland, impassive way while singing in an utterly featureless voice. Talk about a total inability to find the emotional centre of a song.
Thank God not long after this, the 'Dolly Bird' era of female singers drew to a close (or was at least pushed aside) by great female singer/songwriters who played instruments and composed (Joni etc), and rock visionaries like Nico and Patti Smith.
Sorry ,but Nico couldn't sing at all - she wasn't a singer, just a prop! Sandie could sing -just look at the "Ash Any Woman " video, she sings it beautifuly and she can reach the high notes allright- not an easy song to sing believe me!As for the expression on her :1: she 's extremely short sighted ,2: this is a rehearsal on TOP and 3: she was never a shop girl and certainly not plain -the first time I heard Sandie being called plain. She had so much finesse and sexappeal.
TOTP was always famous for insisting that the artists mime their songs - and you'll note she doesn't have a microphone - so my guess is her expression is possibly down to being narked at not being allowed to do it live.
,,, "At last the 1948 show" was another& the first two series of "Dad's Army", this copying process went on well in to the 1970's. So you occasionally see b/w TOTP from the 1970's as well!
All 145 Dr Who's from the 1960's are film recordings, "dusty""cilla"lulu"(excepting some clips of Jimi Hendrix) Hancocks half hour, Steptoe and son, all 5 surviving TOTP from the 1960's. You can tell if they are film recordings by scratches, film wobble, dull sound and "pops". They film recorded programmes for export OR when videorecorders where not available.
This is not quad videotape, it's a "telerecording" that is a film recording onto 16mm film. Either a stored field system or a rapid pulldown system. Hence the scratches and wobble of the film. Only a bit of tape fromn 1965 survives of videorecorded TOTP from the 1960's.
I love this clip. Sandie looks absolutely gorgeous and her cool, indifferent 'performance' during this camera rehearsal gives it a real edge.
This is a rare insight into sixties TV production that has miraculously survived. Video tape was so expensive in those days, run throughs like this would usually have been wiped soon after. The odd looking 'empty' shots are of course where the TOTP audience will later be dancing along.
NoNo - this deadpan stage presence was how Sandie did it in the early days. It wasn't until the late 60's that she became somewhat animated while singing.
The guy is Pete Murray, one of the 4 presenters of TOTP during that era - he has nothing whatsoever to do with Sandy or her "act". She isn't bothering with a performance because - as others have said - this is a camera rehearsal. The proper "final" version has been lost.
Re 45 seconds, that fella down below (the groovy dancer bloke) did something to make her laugh. He almost got a smile from her so it must have been very good. Great performance, love the demeanour, isn't she gorgeous.
As others have pointed out, this was a technical rehearsal for the live performance, hence her seeming 'lack of enthusiasm', non-perfect lip-synching, and some dodgy camera work.
it's a rehearsal tape ...this version was shown on a bbc 60's music series several years ago...it was noted then as being a rehearsal pre show...hence, the lack of enthusiasm.
I'm pretty sure this must be a mime run through and that's why everyone looks so bored. In fact, at one point you can see that she fails to hum at the right point.
AMAZING , its what the early mid sixties was all about so many thanks for posting this clip , CLASSIC SANDIE at her best , having said that she has hardly changed at all (to look at ) and still as cool and amazing as ever , always with it.
I totally agree with you no other female singer had the finesse that Sandie had.THe others look cheap and common and really trashy.Sandie is unique and to top the lot she has this sexy and vulnerable air about her that make you melt away.

Doesnt look like she made a mistake at 45 sec's. Not that i can see anyway. Am i being blind?!

As others have pointed out, this was a technical rehearsal for the live performance, hence her seeming 'lack of enthusiasm', non-perfect lip-synching, and some dodgy camera work.

Oh! Sandie looks a bit miffed in this clip! Gives me the horn ever more, frankly.

she got the mime wrong at 45 sec and had a
quick smile, was that pete murray looking
bored as well?
alanboy555 3 years ago
it's a rehearsal tape ...this version was shown on a bbc 60's music series several years ago...it was noted then as being a rehearsal pre show...hence, the lack of enthusiasm.

I'm pretty sure this must be a mime run through and that's why everyone looks so bored. In fact, at one point you can see that she fails to hum at the right point.

this is a rehearsal - either it's a VERY bad hair-day, or she's one of the early testers of BOTOX!!

AMAZING , its what the early mid sixties was all about so many thanks for posting this clip , CLASSIC SANDIE at her best , having said that she has hardly changed at all (to look at ) and still as cool and amazing as ever , always with it.
In fact she makes Lulu and Cilla look cheap.

I totally agree with you no other female singer had the finesse that Sandie had.THe others look cheap and common and really trashy.Sandie is unique and to top the lot she has this sexy and vulnerable air about her that make you melt away.
