It always seemed to me that after led zepplin, so many bands took after their style, but the only style they took was the bues rock thing. They missed the most important thing about Zep, And thats that they pushed the envelope. They have so much work that is in different guitar tunings and has odd time signatures, but no one really tried to emulate that in the 80's. Soundgarden did though fosho
the nose? through the nose just started, the nose not? Led escapes the rule?... but not to be shadow of nobody! respect Led!!! But bye! passanger of the world... fucking drugs!
He's always talking about those r and b singers as an influence on his singing style but never says who are they. I'd really like to know who are those.
to all the morons saying cornell hits falsettos better than layne and shit clearly you havent listened to shit like man in the box, confusion, real thing, sickman,JUNKHEAD hate to feel and fear the voices.DICKS.
Layne was also incredible live, even when he was lit up. Chris is hit and miss live, or was back in the day. I do prefer Chris' timbre over Layne's. I just wish Chris would have taken better care of his voice.
@mrraraibyouka At one point, he had to have nodules removed from his vocal cords surgically. With a little bit of vocal training, which he may have already done, he could still pull off his 90s screams without killing his voice. I have bootleg recording of a few SG shows from that period, and his voice was wrecked.
Now, I've taken vocal training before, and I can see problems with his technique at times. Sometimes, he's doing it right, sometimes not. He has a tendency to raise his larynx...
@mrraraibyouka ...close his throat and mouth and tightens his jaw, which puts a hell of a lot of stress on the vocal cords, which can lead to damage of the cords.
I love the man's voice. I just wish he'd "stoop" to getting some training to correct his problems. He'd still sound like him and be able to give us that voice for years to come without issue.
@azcodemonkey It also sounds like he probably just smoked too many cigarettes over the years. The raspier voice, the reduced range, etc. But still, Chris Cornell will always be Chris Cornell and he will never be topped.
I totally get where hes coming from on the reasons why you might like or dislike a band based on weird criteria, I snub bed my nose at the grunge music era as a whole back then cos I thought and still do that Nirvana sucked. Never paid attention to AIC,SG til ten years after the fact , and yet they are now in my top 10 all time joining Zep Sabbath and co. Better late than never!
i always thought they sounded more like sabbath, chris doesnt sound like plant at all thats an understatement chris sounds like chris!!! no one else sounds like cornell
@Johnnyboy200406 Listen to a cover of any Sabbath or Zeppelin song by Chris, he can sound exactly like them. I think in some of their songs he sounds sort of like Ozzy.
It's funny that I just came across this comment right now. I was just listening to a mexican rock song called Un vicio caro es el amor by a band called Dildo aka DLD. I was thinking that the Mexican singer sounds alot like Chris Cornell on that track.
@HanoverFist247...I don't think funlivelife's comment was ignorant. I'm Mexican, and in South Texas (where I grew up) there's a lot of guys that look just like Chris Cornell in this pic. From your comment, it seems that you aware of the fact that Mexicans are not a race. Some of us look like Chris Cornell. Some of us look like George Lopez. I, personally, have been mistaken for being a non-Hispanic White guy, particularly Italian, and I've learned to get over it. Life goes on.
@funlivelife...Funny that you mention that. I'm Mexican myself and back in 1990 when I first saw Soundgarden on MTV's Headbanger's Ball I actually thought that the lead singer of this new cool band was Mexican. And then I looked at Kim Thayil and I thought he was just another hairy Mexican with the rugged biker look. Either way, after I found out that they weren't Mexican, it didn't even matter at all. The members of Soundgarden are beyond ethnicity. They're way too cool.
I hear ya, but I find it hard to believe that the other SG members weren't influenced by Zeppelin in the early days (as Cornell said), but specifically Kim Thayil. All those alternate tunings and some of the mid-eastern sounds are staples of many Zeppelin tunes.
i think it's funny.......he says that r&b influenced his singing in this video.yet when he brings out an album that shows his roots(scream) he's a sellout piece of shit and nobody cares to realize his talent. not everyone can sing in more than one type of genre of music like he can. he didnt sellout. at all. it's just sad that his own fans turn on him like that. just appreciate music for what it is shit
thank you hottopichouseeatit10 you speak the truth, people say that was a sell-out, and that he should go back to an old band, rather soundgarden or audioslave, but that would be a sell-out not this, thank you for speaking the truth
i totally agree wit what chris said here... when i was younger i hated metal stuff like metallica or black sabbath cause i didnt want to be seen as a dark person who could be into the devil or suicidal
but now that im older i love metallica and sabbath and dont care to how it makes me look!
cause now i love music 4 music like chris said! not for how it makes me look to the rest of the world, cause thats not important
Chris is one of my favorite vacalists. One thing that he's got over Layne... he's still alive. Sometimes I actually get pissed at Kurt and Layne for not sticking it out...for us...for their families...for themselves.
@illuminati576 I think musically they sounded more like them on that album. I always felt a big Sabbath influence in almost all their albums especially on Badmotorfinger. Superunknown has the darkness of it, but is very trippy and weird. They sound like in between Sabbath and Led Zeppelin to me.

i think S.G's sound and music is really a mix of many bands.
i mean all the heavy hardcore riffs were all derived from Black Sabbath..
i think the only things that make them sound like Led Zeppelin are
S.G's use of Eastern sounds in the alternative tunings, and yea the range of
Chris Cornell's Vocal Styles..

Antwon1960 1 year ago
@NME38 Disagree completely. Layne can give Chris a run for his money. Just because Chris can go higher vocally doesn't mean Layne is no where close.
Layne is the most unique voice in rock history. Everybody is copying his style today.
Chris's voice is great but it's been done many times. e.g. Robert Plant.
Layne is a beast for originality.
