  • there was only one person who could beat this guy vocally nd hes name is rip Layne Staley

  • actually hes irish and jewish was hot as heck and still is with that hair and body back in the nineties

  • It always seemed to me that after led zepplin, so many bands took after their style, but the only style they took was the bues rock thing. They missed the most important thing about Zep, And thats that they pushed the envelope. They have so much work that is in different guitar tunings and has odd time signatures, but no one really tried to emulate that in the 80's. Soundgarden did though fosho

  • one of the best

  • Richie Kotzen is the little Chris Cornell

  • ... And i'm influenced by Chris Cornell

  • the nose? through the nose just started, the nose not? Led escapes the rule?... but not to be shadow of nobody! respect Led!!! But bye! passanger of the world... fucking drugs!

  • He's always talking about those r and b singers as an influence on his singing style but never says who are they. I'd really like to know who are those.

  • to all the morons saying cornell hits falsettos better than layne and shit clearly you havent listened to shit like man in the box, confusion, real thing, sickman,JUNKHEAD hate to feel and fear the voices.DICKS.

  • He looks like Zappa in this pic

  • Layne was also incredible live, even when he was lit up. Chris is hit and miss live, or was back in the day. I do prefer Chris' timbre over Layne's. I just wish Chris would have taken better care of his voice.

  • @azcodemonkey What do you mean "Taken better care of his voice"? I have no point of reference and am just curious what you mean.

  • @mrraraibyouka At one point, he had to have nodules removed from his vocal cords surgically. With a little bit of vocal training, which he may have already done, he could still pull off his 90s screams without killing his voice. I have bootleg recording of a few SG shows from that period, and his voice was wrecked.

Now, I've taken vocal training before, and I can see problems with his technique at times. Sometimes, he's doing it right, sometimes not. He has a tendency to raise his larynx...

  • @mrraraibyouka ...close his throat and mouth and tightens his jaw, which puts a hell of a lot of stress on the vocal cords, which can lead to damage of the cords.

I love the man's voice. I just wish he'd "stoop" to getting some training to correct his problems. He'd still sound like him and be able to give us that voice for years to come without issue.

  • @azcodemonkey Great, thank you for the detail of information, it's quite fascinating

  • @azcodemonkey It also sounds like he probably just smoked too many cigarettes over the years. The raspier voice, the reduced range, etc. But still, Chris Cornell will always be Chris Cornell and he will never be topped.

  • @aimson Could very well be. Yeah, I'll always love the man's voice regardless.

  • He is a great singer...but really comes off as a big dousche. Layne Staley.. any day of the week for me.

  • out of the big 4 (chris, kurt, eddie, layne), Chris is the best if you look at it objectively. He has an amazing vocal range.

  • I love Led Zeppelin, but I believe Chris Cornell's voice is richer and more expressive than Robert Plant's

  • I totally get where hes coming from on the reasons why you might like or dislike a band based on weird criteria, I snub bed my nose at the grunge music era as a whole back then cos I thought and still do that Nirvana sucked. Never paid attention to AIC,SG til ten years after the fact , and yet they are now in my top 10 all time joining Zep Sabbath and co. Better late than never!

  • @uuummm66 smells like teen spirit is the reason why grunge and alternative rock broke into the mainstream

    or so they say........

  • Yeah! Blues are best teachers... soul!!!

  • The good albuns like Superunknown and Down ont the Upside are heavily influenced by led Zeppelin. That's a FACT.

  • el camarada chris! jajajaja

  • i think S.G's sound and music is really a mix of many bands.

i mean all the heavy hardcore riffs were all derived from Black Sabbath..

i think the only things that make them sound like Led Zeppelin are

S.G's use of Eastern sounds in the alternative tunings, and yea the range of

    Chris Cornell's Vocal Styles..

  • i always thought they sounded more like sabbath, chris doesnt sound like plant at all thats an understatement chris sounds like chris!!! no one else sounds like cornell

  • @Johnnyboy200406

    exactly man..

  • @Johnnyboy200406 Listen to a cover of any Sabbath or Zeppelin song by Chris, he can sound exactly like them. I think in some of their songs he sounds sort of like Ozzy.

  • CHris looks like a Mexican kid in this picture..............I'm euphoric that Soundgarden is back!! Finally my wish is true!

  • Yes I saw that as well! Unbelievable!. I wonder if they will create new material or just tour? Either one is just as good imo

  • @illuminati576 they are doing both ;)

  • @funlivelife

It's funny that I just came across this comment right now. I was just listening to a mexican rock song called Un vicio caro es el amor by a band called Dildo aka DLD. I was thinking that the Mexican singer sounds alot like Chris Cornell on that track.

  • @funlivelife How exactly do you look mexican or how does one look mexican? people make some really ignorant comments..

  • @HanoverFist247...I don't think funlivelife's comment was ignorant. I'm Mexican, and in South Texas (where I grew up) there's a lot of guys that look just like Chris Cornell in this pic. From your comment, it seems that you aware of the fact that Mexicans are not a race. Some of us look like Chris Cornell. Some of us look like George Lopez. I, personally, have been mistaken for being a non-Hispanic White guy, particularly Italian, and I've learned to get over it. Life goes on.

  • @funlivelife Best band ever

  • @funlivelife Irish and Jewish could look Mexican I guess.

  • @funlivelife...Funny that you mention that. I'm Mexican myself and back in 1990 when I first saw Soundgarden on MTV's Headbanger's Ball I actually thought that the lead singer of this new cool band was Mexican. And then I looked at Kim Thayil and I thought he was just another hairy Mexican with the rugged biker look. Either way, after I found out that they weren't Mexican, it didn't even matter at all. The members of Soundgarden are beyond ethnicity. They're way too cool.

  • WOW. i was really suprised that he wasn't really influenced by zeppelin, at all...

  • I hear ya, but I find it hard to believe that the other SG members weren't influenced by Zeppelin in the early days (as Cornell said), but specifically Kim Thayil. All those alternate tunings and some of the mid-eastern sounds are staples of many Zeppelin tunes.

  • Euphoria Morning is such a great album check it out

  • i think it's funny.......he says that r&b influenced his singing in this video.yet when he brings out an album that shows his roots(scream) he's a sellout piece of shit and nobody cares to realize his talent. not everyone can sing in more than one type of genre of music like he can. he didnt sellout. at all. it's just sad that his own fans turn on him like that. just appreciate music for what it is shit

  • Yeah, Scream sucked...It wasn't that it was an R&B album, it was that it was a shitty R&B album.

  • theres a version of one of the songs, its the same song, but instead of of shitty techno crap, theres a real band, google it

  • there is old school r&b and the sell-out crap of 2009 that is called r&b.

CC is referring here to the old r&b

  • well you do have a point man. he shouldnt of collaborated with timbaland at all. cause timbaland made shitty pop music as it was.

  • thank you hottopichouseeatit10 you speak the truth, people say that was a sell-out, and that he should go back to an old band, rather soundgarden or audioslave, but that would be a sell-out not this, thank you for speaking the truth

  • i totally agree wit what chris said here... when i was younger i hated metal stuff like metallica or black sabbath cause i didnt want to be seen as a dark person who could be into the devil or suicidal

but now that im older i love metallica and sabbath and dont care to how it makes me look!

cause now i love music 4 music like chris said! not for how it makes me look to the rest of the world, cause thats not important

  • Chris is one of my favorite vacalists. One thing that he's got over Layne... he's still alive. Sometimes I actually get pissed at Kurt and Layne for not sticking it out...for us...for their families...for themselves.

  • Comment removed

  • I like how he basically admitted that he didn't like good music when he was younger just because it was popular.

  • Best vocalist alive.

    Hands down.

Too bad Layne isn't around to give him some competition :(

    Fuckin speedballl.

  • yeah layne was amazing the only one who could ever give chris a run for his money

  • too bad robert plant cant sing any more

  • yes yes yes!

layne is my fav singer too!

both of em to me were and still are some of the best singers there ever were!

  • @VilkacisMusic Yah man, fucking sucks!

  • dude, that rapping faggot mike poontang can suck me off

  • this interview is from 96 or 97 if you guys wanna know

  • never would have guessed that late. he definitely didn't sing like robert plant on DOTUS

  • @illuminati576 I think musically they sounded more like them on that album. I always felt a big Sabbath influence in almost all their albums especially on Badmotorfinger. Superunknown has the darkness of it, but is very trippy and weird. They sound like in between Sabbath and Led Zeppelin to me.

  • hey would u be able to tell me what album they r talking about in this. and illuminati did u ever find out what interview this is a part of? i'd like 2 hear the whole thing

  • I think it is Louder than Love but not sure, Ultra Mega OK didn't have a zepplin feel to it, could be Badmotorfinger. I haven't searched for the whole thing, though im sure its out there somewhere

  • @TilderyKoadil its from the down on the upside era, its the only album they produced on their own!

  • I don't know much about rock but some voices I love are Chris Cornell, Kurt Cobain, Mick Jagger, and I know it's not even rock but 80's soft rock but Phil Collins.

  • that influence, i think, is a big part of what makes his voice so outstanding. it doesn't sound like he's trying to sing opera.

  • So true about the RnB influence! I could hear the influence and now he confirms it.

  • sry hate to bring this up,but staley/cornell,weiland,veddar are GREAT singers!!,BUT are not grunge singers.they are too good!!! now mark arm of mudhoney!!!thats a grunge singer!!!

  • havent got grunge voices but play big elements of grunge

  • Chris

    Layne

    Eddie

    Weiland

    Best singers ever!

    Fuck cobain

  • f@ck cobain?!

    COMMON NOW MR DEF LEPPARD!

    HAHA!

  • add maynard in that and you got a fucking list!

  • "You can't like that band cos then you're a jerk"- haha!

  • I always thought Chris Cornell sounded a lot like John Fogerty.

  • I'm sorry to break it to all of you but although Layne Staley is an amazing singer, he is no where near as good as Cornell.

  • I think Layne Staley, Chris Cornell & Eddie Vedder are all special in their own ways. However, I do think Chris was the best at hitting those crazy-ass high notes!

  • i think layne is better but thats my opinion. out of my two favorite singers, layne just appeals to me a little more. Sure chris can hit notes that layne cant touch with the tips of his fingers, but i just love the way layne sounds.

  • See, I'm the opposite. I wouldn't care if Chris could hit those high notes or not, I just love the way he sounds.

  • well ur not the opposite. i dont care about the high notes either, or else i would like chris better because he can hit them. layne can't hit the notes chris can and i like layne better. because i dont care about the high notes u know? so ur not the opposite of me, ur the same. u just prefer chris's voice to laynes.. i guess ur opposite in that context. but when it comes to not caring about the high notes, just caring about how they sound, we r have the same point of view.

  • @NME38 let alone be as good as hes been for so long

  • @NME38 Disagree completely. Layne can give Chris a run for his money. Just because Chris can go higher vocally doesn't mean Layne is no where close.

Layne is the most unique voice in rock history. Everybody is copying his style today.

Chris's voice is great but it's been done many times. e.g. Robert Plant.

Layne is a beast for originality.

  • @NME38 Well, he is near. But Cornell is clearly better.

  • @NME38 fuck you! Noone can beat layne! Not even cornycunt

  • @DancingMedicineMan Cornell lo aplasta

  • sorry to dissapoint you but for me hes the best!

  • guess youll be hearing from my lawyers than....

  • sry, i accidentally removed your comment. i meant to reply to it but hit remove instead. but anyway, comparing weiland to cornell is a travesty. i cant even offer evidence because its so obvious whos better.

  • damn u hate me dontcha...but i dont wanna get in a scott/chris argument herer wit you...but from a grunge lover to another i think Cornell is a better singer...imean listen to his high notes Weiland can never reach those...but as in beautiful wise Scott sounds better...imean listen to interstate love song for christ sake...im not one to argue though thats just wat i think...imean i like Cornell better than...but none of them beats Staley...Staley/Cornell/Weiland/Vedder....Legends in my order!

  • the interview

  • mmm i think that it's fake

  • what is fake, the interview or what Chris is saying?

  • BEST VOCALIST EVER. LIVE LEGEND.

  • SInce Layne Staley!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Chris is the best vocalist on the planet

yea Layne is the best of all time!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Chris is the best vocalist in the entire earth...Layne is the best in the Entire Universe! haha we sound like lil kids

  • im the best vocalist on the planet of all times and i speak japanese

  • Pathetic.

    Ching cha? Go-san- Out-san It's-san better-san

  • xupalo (:

  • hes the best ever

  • Hahah! What he says is true. ^^ I passed the 90's without taking much care to the music it carried. Silly me. I'm looking back and loving it more then ever.

  • this is actually part of a huge interview that's around 15 minutes long.

    very interesting stuff.

  • really? where can i get it, i would like to hear the whole thing

  • interesting man thanx!!!

  • awsome

chris is a pretty mega singer
