There are many anime series which have better story, but Hellsing has one of the greatest dark, heavy and cynical vibe:)

Keep your eyes open for the new OVA series, Hellsing Ultimate. So far OVAs 1, 2, 3 are out, and they follow the manga MUCH more closely. I thought the original Hellsing couldn't possibly get anymore badass and awesome--I WAS WRONG! The OVAs are SO freakin badass i couldn't believe it

Not a dumb question! OVA -does- stand for something: Original Video Animation or sometimes OAV, Original Animation Video. They're basically animes that are made specifically as home videos or for home viewing, rather than as a series airing on television.
