Zoro improved at least 4 things past this 2 years: endurance, speed, streangth and, lets say, field-scan abillity (can't say "orientation in terrain" as we don't know if he still won't get lost XD). Those things, to a skilled swordsmen, are more then enougth to create a "barrier", WITHOUT useing Haki.

Haoshoku Haki lets you dominate others with weaker willpower than yours, and Kenbunshoku Haki lets you sense the presence of other things no matter where they are.

@edgehead960 That's really Zoro's entire character summed up right there. He's unarguably the strongest member of the Straw Hats, and he got that way through training. Even Luffy is outmatched by him because a lot of his strength came from being stupid and eating something some strange men gave him in a bar. Basically, he's what Rock Lee should be in Naruto; someone who's spent their whole life training and rightfully kicks everyone's ass because of it, not needing special powers or short cuts.

@Corgblam I'm well aware he trained, but not to the extent of Zoro, who was, at the same age as Luffy, training to the point where a normal kid -even a normal man- would probably die from exhaustion. Luffy trained hard, but only when Garp was there, so he's already got the edge. My point of talking down Devil Fruits is that they give you an advantage above others that you didn't have to develop yourself. He trained how to use it, but he'd still be rubber if he didn't. Being bullet proof is handy

@10Reapaer01 yeah Luffy trained harder than zoro. Luffy was thrown into the jungle by his grandfather. He found gaints bears and tigers and he was the only one able before the time skip to one shot a sea king. The captain is always the strongest member. Also luffy didn't train when only Garp was there he trained with Ace and Sabo as kids they fought everyday. You gotta remember the rubber fruit doesn't give strength it only lets you stretch. That strength is all Luffy even without the fruit.
