Also - the parking enforcement number is 510/981-5890. Let them know if someone takes Code PINK's space --- or if Code PINK uses it at any other time, or parks its truck in the loading zone across the street for several hours, or forgets to pay their meters.

Fair is fair. They get one protected parking space from 12-4pm on Wednesday, and routinely ignore parking regulations that don't favor them.

Rather than firing the cops I want us to make it necessary and possible for them to do the right thing.

The high school kids were gross, and I know some of them. The skateboarders were worse, and one of them wrote in to the local paper to complain that a cop had bopped him with a baton when he "wasn't doing anything" A lot of Berkeley kids are spoiled that way. No concept of responsibility vs. entitlement.

I wouldn't like anyone to assault my kids, you're right.

As Betty Olds said at one point, she heard more from her district this 2 weeks than ever -- and they were furious over the Council's action.

BCC listens to those who speak up. A lot of reasonable people remained quiet and polite WAY too long. I didn't take the Pinkos seriously. Didn't know the Mayor's wife was one.

To make up for my mistake I have written BCC several times, posted comments wherever appropriate, baked brownies, gone to the protest at 5:00. What if all the quiet people spoke up?

The police are reined in by the local climate and what the Council tells them. If enough Berkeley residents tell them that "neutral" doesn't mean "passive" -- and to enforce the laws of the City routinely and without showing favoritism...well, numbers talk.

I'll go read your blog, & I thank you for listening. By the way -- accounts from both sides of the protest accused the cops of showing favor and being too harsh on one side. I think its a good sign if both think they weren't favored. Right?
