this was the best year of my life as a young 17 year old teenager in cork city ireland watching an irishman win the tour and everyday i would cycle home from school pretending i was stephen roche
I have this on VHS I think CBS did and it was shown on RTE.Makes the hairs stand on my neck when I watch it, the music was brillant I taught on the whole show. I was working in a television shop at the time and it was full that day with people looking!
I used to hold my stereo up to the tv to record these off the videos i had, then I'd play them in my walkman when i was training...I still turned out crap thoe.haha.still brings back some wonderfull memories all the same. :+)
Has anyone tried the DVDs being sold at the site? I want to buy some if they are better quality than here on youtube. Even decent standards of the VHS tapes of the day would be ok with me.
I have this song in better format without the commentary. Actually I have a cassette "Music from the Tour de France" which includes much more of your favourites from around this era. No steak knives though. Please contact if you are interested.
Roche was the last winner of the Tour who used Toe clips and straps on his pedals. Kids at Bike shops these days have never heard of anything like "straps"

@bikeracerguy no 1989 tour is far greater, Lemond beat Fignon (RIP) by 8 seconds only on the final stage!

Roche was a fantastic cyclist to not only win the Tour but win the Giro in italy and the world championship all in the same year was amazing!!!!!
I grew up in that era and he got me hooked right into cycling.
Just watched the time trial on the tour and noticed that Delgado looks like a cross between Rambo and bruce springsteen.

"John Tesh" its on a CD called "Tour De France"
jimmlt 2 years ago
It's called "Looking Glass," it's by Yanni, and it's from the album "Keys to Imagination."

ACtually that background music is by John Tesh and the tune is named "Head Clobbers"

ah there it is--the classic Phil Liggett commenting over the music bed of one of Yanni's songs. Brilliant!

That's true, but why should they?

Very nice video; it's a shame only that it isn't longer. I had forgotten how close the race was in 1987.

Dont forget Pierre Salanger.

This is one of the best collections of ABC's Wide World of Sports coverage of the Tour. Phil Liggett kicks ass.

Actually, it was CBS Sports Sunday before 1989. But no matter. Pick your poison: John Tesh or Sam Posey.

Check out Roche's saddle - pure Brooks leather. Great moment when he lashes out at the French reporters at the end

Selle marco I think you're find...leather covered.

Delgady tossing his headband to his fans right before setting out to certain defeat -- nice touch.
