As a black man listening to rock back in the day, when I heard Bad Brains, later Fishbone, Sound Barrier and The Bus Boys then 24-7 Spyz and Living Color it let me know that WE could rock as well but then go back and listen to Jimi Hendrix and The Chambers Brothers.etc.
