I had the enormous good fortune to present Arthur and this lineup in concert in Colorado about a year before we lost him. He and the band were nothing short of brilliant - people of a certain vintage age in the audience during this opening song were in tears.
Arthur was a total pro, very generous, extremely kind, a little shy... the great thing is that at the end of his life he knew how much people loved him and admired him.
God bless you Arthur. It was my honor. It really was.
One of the most amazing and well deserved comebacks in music. Unfortunately it didn't last longer. Arthur Lee was a genius and his music remains timeless.
Saw them at the much missed Limelight club in Crewe, Ray the owner had no idea who He'd booked and was gobsmacked at the fact people had to be shoehorned in, a fantastic night was had and luckily I have a soundboard recording,. Happy days, in the same twelve months or so we got Paul Kantner and the Vanilla fudge...R.I.P. Arthur Lee and the wonderful Limey.
AL sounds amazingly good considering the hard life he had and his untimely death just two years later. AL, Bryan McLean, and Love are criminally underrated and forgotten by the musical establishment. "Forever Changes" was such an incredible (if troubled) band! I wish AL and all the others (Syd Barrett, Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Morrison, Joplin, Garcia and on and on in the sad litany) were still here and jamming- who needs another "Coldplay" album???
You just cannot beat Memphis boys when it comes to total invention. Stax. Volt. Hi. Alex, there's a hole in the bridge. Mister Arthur Lee, sorry I missed you. Unbelievable song.
'Saw these guys play many times. Loved "Forever Changes". I always wondered why a band as great as Love faded away like they did. Arthur Lee tried many times to revive the band but heroin and $ troubles that took out the first band poisoned promotors and they never touched them again. Finally, California's 3 strike law put Lee away for a mandatory 10 yrs. A creative guy who never hurt anyone did 5+ years, got out, and leukemia took him in '06.
I've heard this song many times, but until someone told me the name of the song or the name of the band, I didn't know who it was. I thought I was listening to the Moody Blues.
hey this is one of the greatest bands I have seen in the last decade. That they managed to do this so close to ALs parting sort of made me feel privileged to have caught their act. Y viva los 60s/long live the 60s.
Arthur Lee and Love were simply too hip for most people to comprehend during the 60s. Therefore, he was unable to make a complete fruition of his true genius.
Perhaps mismanagement had a bit to do with it also.
Nevertheless, he will be greatly missed and, unfortunately, under exposed in the history books. RIP brother. You have a great heart that will be felt on the "other side".
One of the biggest influences in modern music, yet, unsung...
Arthur gave Jimi his first recording session, ca. 1964, and Jimi's style of dress was also influenced by Arthur. They were both so ahead of their times!
I was fortunate to see the old guy not long after this and not long before he unfortunately passed away and he did not disapoint! ...a real 60's legend and like the Beatles & Beach Boys Love were a stand-alone sound and truly something different and new at that time!
I saw Calexico do this (and a whole show) with a full Mariachi band at a small theater in Tucson a few years back. Pretty cool, but i regret not seeing Arthur do this tour...
I loved both the UFO version and the one by Arthur Lee,to me they are both great. Thanks for your support, but i suppose everyone has an opinion.I saw this version live on Jools Holland and at the time i thought it was great.
yes that is an understatement lol. i see some smart things written on here and some really boneheaded things also...it's as though you can't like UFO and LOVE since they're completely different kinds of music...it's good to be eclectic.
I saw Arthur Lee perform Forever Changes at the Royal Festival Hall in London and remember an involuntary tear start to roll down my cheek as the first notes of Alone Again Or shimmered in the dark. I was crying both with gratitude and in disbelief - was this really the mythic figure of Arthur Lee singing for us? We'll always love you, Arthur.
We were disappointed that he didn't play Alone Again Or at the gig in Glasgow. There was no strings section, but the rest of the concert was fantastic.
Okay, this'll sound weird, but the first time I EVER heard this guy was this very appearance with "You Set the Scene"...2 hours after seeing the movie Grindhouse, and I was thinking how absolutely GREAT these two songs would sound on a future Tarantino movie! I didn't know Arthur Lee had died until I looked him up, though. But I did buy one of those "Definitive Collections". He was definitely better than his '60's counterparts like Jimi, Janis, and Jim. Wish I got to see him live! :(
Awesome - how tragic that he's no longer with us - but brilliant that he introduced an entie new generation to his timeless and beautiful music - and that he was appreciated for his art at what would turn out to be the end of his life :(
yes - we went to see Arthur Lee as a direct result of this appearance on Jools Holland and were privileged to see one of his last shows in Britain before he died. What a life, and what a talent!
The Damned did a cover of this, and Pale Fountains/Shack owe much to Lee's/Love's sound. Great song--the Love concert at the Royal Albert is a majestic listen.
Forever Changes was a great album.
