Metallica just did some medleys of Mercyful Fate songs on their tour. Besides that I think they are pretty good friends too. That's all. Corpse without souls even is from the mini EP "Mercyful Fate", which some might know as "Nuns have no fun" or "The beginning". The last one has Satan's Fall, Funeral and Black Masses to come with it and came out about 1987

Metallica hasn't done a decent album since their Metallica album. Nothing memorable. King has done more memorable songs with both Mercyful Fate (9, Burn in Hell anyone?) and King Diamond (Give Me Your Soul, Please?) than Metallica in the last 15 years.

The reason Lars Ulrich likes his fellow dane King Diamond is that they both started out in the late 70s and of course by his influence Metallica has had a soft spot for Mercyful Fate and King Diamond.
