No coughing, no recording, no filming, no moving, no breathing, no giving sign of being alive... I want to play alone, you're supposed to be here just for the ticket and for a big passionate applause at the end. (And me gary and jack we'll keep the right to live the goddamn city if not enough passionate or big). Come on... These people just killed Jazz music. I want John Coltrane back and I'll give you ten k. Jarrett...
Holy Moly that was rude.....Yeah, Keith's one of the greatest musicians to ever walk the earth, but I'll tell ya something.....I wish I could listen to his piano genius without listening to all his moaning and grunting and humming and bad singing. Keith Jarrett is the king of what Zappa called "Jazz Noise".
Oh boo hoo. People love me and want to photograph me. Oh the humanity. If the flash is on, then I get it. It's a distraction and thats just rude of the person. But this guy is just being a pretentious asshole. This is the last few moments of my time I waste on anything Keith Jarrett related.
If he doesn't want to be photographed, DON'T BE A PERFORMER SHIT STAIN!
I agree if it said no recording devices then people should follow the rules, but the Lord reserves the right to punish this guy.The Lord will not leave anyone unpunished who takes his name in vain!
Well, it was clearly said before the concert - no recording devices. Do you go to a non-smoking restaurant and light up a cigar? And then bitch about how you got kicked out on the Internet?
And by the way, people who take cameras into a Keith Jarrett concert are assholes. And they should turn them fucking off. And if they don't, Keith, Jack and Gary have earned the right to leave their goddamn city. So I really don't see what the fuss is about.
To be able to produce his music, Keith Jarrett is, by definition, operating close to the extremes of human emotions. Few people can truly understand what this means but I imagine it makes you hyper-sensitive and prone to outbursts of all kinds. His personality and his music are two sides of the same coin and I (along with many others) am more than happy to put up with one in order to experience the other. And as I said before, if you don't like it, stay away.
'....his occasional outburts (mostly justified in my view) are completely insignificant....." This is bullshit. No one has the right to address an audience that has paid to see them with such insulting and obnoxious vitriol. Jarrett's juvenile rant was offensive, extremely disrespectful and unprofessional. I don't give a damn how good you are -YOU DO NOT ADDRESS AN AUDIENCE LIKE THAT! Jarrett has the right to voice his concerns about cameras. But the toxic trash talking is unacceptable.
I bet the people slagging off Keith Jarrett here haven't actually been to one of his concerts. If they had, they would realise that compared to the life-changing art this genius produces, his occasional outburts (mostly justified in my view) are completely insignificant and not worthy of comment. However, if anyone thinks this is a reason to boycott his concerts - great, more chance that I can get tickets.
@mrcelada No, Keith doesn't do drugs, for sure. He is just a conceited pompous asshole. No respect for his audience, who for some reason puts up w/ this infant.
What an ass hole, I would be the owner of festival I would say : "the concert is cancelled, we gonna give your money back your as we gonna ask to Mr Jarret and his friends to leave our city, until he learn what is to respect his audience"
I don't care how good he can be, he's just and ass, and there a lot of great Jazz player.
@Rodgebi I agree 100% w/ you. No one should go to his concerts. They will be nice and quiet. While KJ is good, he's IMO only masterful, but not a "Master or Giant". Not an innovator, never changed music (other than his behavior) never really influenced anyone. I would have headed for the ticket office & demanded a refund. How are you going to enjoy music after that bullshit? Throw the bum out!
I think Keith Jarrett allways does a contract with the public. Nothing of camera shooting or flash. Several times he was explained it. Because his concerts are unique a rare. He works on very difficult and focused improvisations. On this way all the people knows this contract.
I read in some paper a few years ago "the man is a shit and the artist is sublime." Truth is nobody has ever played the piano like Jarrett, and I just don't think anyone can (at least on his solo improvs).
I think it's obvious who "the fucking asshole" is here. It's that little rodent w/ the mike. A privilege for the audience ? I think it's a privilege for this pompous ass to play for the people who keep food on his table. How can the public fall for this shit. KJ is a great player, but no "giant". I think his concerts should be boycotted. Maybe he will change his "tune"!
KJ is a masterful pianist. But he is not a "Master or Giant". He has never changed anything musically. He is a narcissist, and loves only himself. His behavior is like an infant. But there is more to this behavior. It is part of a carefully honed act. Be the "sensitive genius". Can you imagine the true masters, Louis, Count, Duke, Monk, Evans, Miles, Trane, to name a few, acting like this? I don't think KJ minds if you "cough" (a BIG PROBLEM) for him, while your buying your ticket!
It's bizarre that people even expect to be able to bring in cameras, recorders, etc. When I was younger going to concerts, they'd frisk you before you got in, and anything like a camera, recorder, flask, etc. would be confiscated from you and you would NOT get it back. So people knew to not even think about taking them. I supposed all of this changed with cell phones, but I'm surprised that venues started allowing cell phones in rather than confiscating them.
You've missed the fundamental point. Keith Jarrett isn't interested in getting the audience 'on his side'. What he is doing is releasing his artistic energy in public. And if people want to pay and come and experience this process, on his terms, fine. If not, stay away. And by the way, Keith Jarrett's concerts are always sold out a long time in advance, mainly to people who understand the contract.
However, two rudes don't make a right. I can understand his reaction to the inconsideration of the flash bulbs was reflective but that's no way to get the crowd on your side. Take a breath and count to 10 Keith, jeez.
You tell 'em keith. If people want to talk, cough and take photos they should go to a Justin Beiber concert. Keith Jarrett has earned the right to expect complete respect and concentration from his audiences. Some of the idiots here clearly have no concept of the levels of concentration and commitment it takes to perform music at this level (I'm not sure I do either but I have a vague idea that flashing lights going off intermittently isn't going to help).
@Jez2008UK Fuck you, bitch. It's YOUR privilege to hear them ON THEIR TERMS and they have the freedom of speech to say whatever they want about it HOWEVER they want. If you don't like it, go fuck yourself. And if you're so butthurt about being cussed at, you're a sheltered little English pussy who never should've left the safety of his world of Will Young, Justin Bieber, and Daniel Radcliffe.
Even Keith says "I *think* the privilege is yours" - meaning he's not sure, it's his opinion.
Well, my opinion is that Keith has it back to front. Who does he think he is ?? Acting egotistically - there are 1,000s of people in the audience. Why play to the audience if he is to insult them ?? He should play with himself.
Oh and the *way* he swears sounds lame, like a wimp.
As for you fanboy, go clean that brown stuff off your nose. Then lick it.
@Jez2008UK The phrase "I think" does not necessarily imply uncertainty. If you are indeed too stupid to understand that, nothing can be done. And the issue is not who he THINKS he is, the issue is who he IS: easily one of the greatest artists to ever lay hands on a piano. As an improviser, he very well may have no equal, past or present, which is why there are thousands of people in that audience and at every other Keith Jarrett performance.
He 'thinks' its the audience's privilege meaning in his opinion - bulkhead.
Oh and if he is the 'greatest' improviser, which I won't argue with, that still doesn't give him the right to insult the paying public. Show some class, and respect, and a little less snobbery.
@Jez2008UK Ok, you're far too stupid to talk to. The next time I'm overseas, I'll leave a comment and see if you still feel like talking shit. Until then, try to stop being such a whiny little bitch boy.
And you are far too racist and homophobic as well as a stupid hypocrite since in other YouTube clips of this incident (being sartorically parodied), you agree that he is insulting.,
@Jez2008UK When did I ever say it wasn't insulting? I'm defending his right to insult the assholes who are ruining it for the performers and the classy people who are there to enjoy it without fucking it up for other people. I am nowhere near the caliber musician Keith is but I've insulted people over the mic, too. Why? Because we are obligated to put these assholes in their place. And what makes you think I'm homophobic? I don't care how much you like sucking dick. I hate you for other reasons.
@Jez2008UK He didn't take the stage with the intention of insulting the audience. It's not like it was on the set list, moron. If those fucking ignorant eurotrash pieces of shit could read and follow directions in the first place (yes, it was posted that photography or recording of any kind was prohibited), there would never have been a problem. I see you're a limp-wristed feb pohm pussy so I can understand why degenerate inbred trash like you would side with the assholes at scumbria.
People with cell phones at concerts. Are they there for the music or to take pics to show their friends that they were there? Wait until spectacles have cameras and mics built in, with uploading devices sending to your PC so that when you get home after the gig you can watch the DVD! Let's put mirror cams on the spectacles so you can see yourself rocking! You will be able to tell your friends "I was there! Look, look that's me at whatsisnames gig. He's a great musician but that's me there"!
@1969atam There's nothing wrong about taking a few pics. Of course, people not knowing their limits (like making endless videos) is another problem but people have been taking pics at concerts for decades and I don't really see the reason why he's insulting them.
I'm a jazz pianist from San Francisco. I was in the audience in 2006 at the San Francisco Opera House when Keith scolded a crowd of several thousand for having cameras and cell phones. In 2010, He scolded a packed house at Symphony Hall, which errupted into a shouting match between keith and the audience. Keith finally sat at the piano and played every request the audience called out, no matter what kind of music. ... the world's biggest piano bar scene. It's now chic to be scolded by Keith!
Jesus Christ, what an asshole...talk about biting the hand that feeds you...er, Keith? If it wasn't for all those 'fucking assholes' who PAID GOOD MONEY for their tickets you'd be on bleedin' welfare or playing some fucking piano bar or supper club somewhere for bus fare! I can't stand when artists try to dictate what they think they audiences should or shouldn't be doing...if you can't handle having your photo taken, DON'T BECOME FAMOUS!
OKAY - so he hates people coughing and is willing to berate anyone at a moment's notice - YET - he doesn't mind distracting the audience by yelling, grunting, and indeed posturing like he is a)having sex with the piano and about to orgasm OR b) constipated and about to blow an o-ring trying to squeeze on out. Seems hypocritical to this viewer. You be the judge... (or be a nuthugger of assholes and enabler of their temper tantrums.)
Keith Jarrett is a fucking retard. I don't mean that in an insulting way, but if you look at the movements he makes while he plays and the sounds he makes, he is ACTUALLY retarded. I'm talking fundamentally and technically retarded. That's right, I said it. Keith Jarrett is a technical fucken retard.
I was in the audience at Montreux for Dizzy's U.N. orchestra in 1990 when Airto walked on stage and made a heated announcement that Claude Nobs et. al. were not living up to the contract (maybe they hadn't even signed it yet, I'm not sure), and half the band left the stage. Slide never even came back. The university band I was in had just played, so we had access to the musicians' lounge. It was an intense scene, but they band eventually came back and played after things got worked out.
You may not like what he said or how he said it, but keep in mind that these top-level players have been burned SO many times by sleazy concert promoters and clubowners, that we need to give them some latitude.
It's a different business world for them, both today and when they were coming up in the ranks 40 years ago. Whether you agree or not with how he handled it, try to take a little understanding into account.
People using mobile phones and cameras in a concert are truely an annoyance - I understand Jarrett's irritation. However, his insulting little speech is way too aggressive and full of hate. How can you enjoy listening to a trio that plays the most tender Jazz ballads when all the "fucks" and "assholes" are still on your mind? His musicianship is great - as a (public) person HE is the ass****.
LOL I love this. It never gets old. Keith was WELL within his rights here and, arrogant or not, he was absolutely correct when he said it was their privilege to be there listening to the trio. The purchase price of a concert ticket DOES NOT buy you the rights to record the performance and if you're going to disrespect the artist(s), don't be surprised if they call you an asshole and leave.
I have heard he suffers from migraines that are triggered by bright lights. In other interviews he will stop and put on sunglasses to protect his eyes.
The problem is: maybe Jarrett is right to bash those assholes with cameras , but he talks like the whole audience is responsible for it. I saw him in Berlin 1year ago and the audience was ok - but not 5 people- we had to fear him stopping the concert cause of this minority. And 2times he spoke:"Outside there's total chaos, but inside let's concentrate for the music","You may think it's easy for me, cause I do it so often... ?" I think he's right but not able to handle the audience
I think this is funny... Who cares if he trips out. Just laugh at him and listen to "the music". I think we are all guilty of taking ourselves to seriously at times.
He also said something else like: "if you use cameras while we play music will not be the best and you will have paid good money for nothing." I too felt bad when I heard him speaking like that but I mailny prefer to focus on the music here. This trio is truly one of the best ever assembled and keeps getting better as time passes, just like good old wine. We're not going to hang around with these guys. I suggest we just enjoy them while they are still around, which will not last forever...
I was there too. Traveled all the way from Athens to hear for a first time live the best trio alive. I agree he lost his temper and his phrasing was not appropiate, especially for an artist of his status. But: even extraordianary persons like him are still human like the rest of us.. There was a clear warning both in Italian and English about the use of cameras which some people did not respect and led to this reaction. The video does not contain some other words he added like:
A inflexible, dogmatic attitude regarding electronic instruments; haranguing his audiences about cameras...Jarrett is a man in his 60s, yet from time to time he still acts like John McEnroe did during his 'Superbrat' era (McEnroe, to his credit, stopped carrying on like a petulant jerk years ago). You begin to wonder if Jarrett is an Asperger's case...
What would be awesome is if Brian Culbertson's band gong'd him with their song, "So Good" right after Keith drops the f-bomb. I could totally picture that on a bloopers TV show of some kind!
@sastal Mi riferivo forse a te?
so is Rab Hines the same scumfuck that harasses me and some others, makes copies of our channels, and spends all his time stalking people online? cause the one that's been doing that to me, has been doing it on loads of other forums for many years. and YT know about their many channels here, and they do fuck-all about it.
Lets face it nobody would dream of taking photos of ,say, Maurizio Pollini in the middle of a classical piano recital--what Jarrett does requires at least as much concentration as that!---besides he IS the greatest living jazz musician without a doubt--i don't know why people expect an extraordinary person to behave in an ordinary way
In one sense i can think of no other musician who shows MORE respect to his audience in respect that he always pushes himself with 200% effort
@MrReinhardtd - I was there. someone had already come out and made an announcement asking for the cameras to go away. no one was taking photos during his performance, this was just when he first walked out. it was utterly unnecessary what he said, and the tone of voice in which he said it. extraordinary my ass, these people are PAYING HIM to hear him play. when you get to spend your life making 80 grand a night for doing something that you love, then you keep your mouth shut.
@Archaebob - that's wrong. so what if they make lots of money, nobody is forced to go see them. making lots of money doesn't mean you have to take any shit from anyone. i'm completely anti-capitalist, but if i got an opportunity to make 80 grand for a night for something like a music performance, no that doesn't mean anyone can even as much as bad-vibe me in their mind.
This is a very sad display of Jarrett's personality. He totally killed the moment. Such arrogance is always disappointing and blameworthy, all the more so when it comes from a genius of music. Its bizarre that some people might on the contrary be enclined to justify his being a complete jerk because he's a great musician. How am I supposed to enjoy your music after you called me an asshole, and not even in my own language??! Hell of a job for someone who's in the business of human feelings!
Garantito.

Keith Jarret is a genius pianist/composer/improviser, but, like any genius, he's prone to tantrums & primadonna stuff; even though he's being crude, he's probably in the right concerning unauthorized recordings.
The pedophile stalker Rab Hines can not stay away from Utube. I tell him to ignore ignore ignore, but he insistes that he must dance for his PuppetMaster
I heard that Simon Hunt and a few other pedophile friends of Rab Hines go to a lot of effort to buy, rip - from LP and CD - scan at the highest quality they can.
Oh wow...I would have exercised my right to NOT stick around for his goddam performance...and to never play his recordings on my "effing" radio show ever again.
This is a quote from an interview in the JazzTimes: "What the clip does not capture, he argues, is the clear and firm announcement, in Italian, that the artists have one simple request, and hardly an uncommon one: no flash photography. (Peacock, he adds, is light sensitive.) Yet the trio was bombarded with flashes upon taking the stage, another detail not apparent on the video. Feeling brazenly disrespected, Jarrett lashed back. He does acknowledge, however, that the audience took the fall.
keith jarrett's the artist, and if he wants it the way he wants it then he should have it.... if he doesn't, the audience will get a less than perfect performance. which is what the general public wants
Leggi sotto. Sei un pianista. Dovresti capirmi ( anche se dissenti)
Non puoi suonare Evans. Suoni te stesso. Di Evans recuperi le misure dei chorus. Mi auguro Time remembered, very early, un po' meno Waltz for Debby.

KingRundzap 9 months ago
You've missed the fundamental point. Keith Jarrett isn't interested in getting the audience 'on his side'. What he is doing is releasing his artistic energy in public. And if people want to pay and come and experience this process, on his terms, fine. If not, stay away. And by the way, Keith Jarrett's concerts are always sold out a long time in advance, mainly to people who understand the contract.
MrDavis746 10 months ago
Well. Cut & Paste @00:45: watch?v=y9rTZLjBOfI&feature=related

Some of the idiots here clearly have no concept of the levels of concentration and commitment it takes to perform music at this level (I'm not sure I do either but I have a vague idea that flashing lights going off intermittently isn't going to help).

dangerbooboo 9 months ago
@dangerbooboo
"your privilege" - HA HA!!!!
Jez2008UK 9 months ago
@Jez2008UK The phrase "I think" does not necessarily imply uncertainty. If you are indeed too stupid to understand that, nothing can be done. And the issue is not who he THINKS he is, the issue is who he IS: easily one of the greatest artists to ever lay hands on a piano. As an improviser, he very well may have no equal, past or present, which is why there are thousands of people in that audience and at every other Keith Jarrett performance.
dangerbooboo 9 months ago
@dangerbooboo
He 'thinks' its the audience's privilege meaning in his opinion - bulkhead.
Oh and if he is the 'greatest' improviser, which I won't argue with, that still doesn't give him the right to insult the paying public. Show some class, and respect, and a little less snobbery.
Jez2008UK 9 months ago
@Jez2008UK Ok, you're far too stupid to talk to. The next time I'm overseas, I'll leave a comment and see if you still feel like talking shit. Until then, try to stop being such a whiny little bitch boy.

1969atam 11 months ago

Jesus Christ, what an asshole...talk about biting the hand that feeds you...er, Keith? porkchopsjar 1 year ago

His musicianship is great - as a (public) person HE is the ass****.
miles65 1 year ago
LOL I love this. It never gets old. Keith was WELL within his rights here and, arrogant or not, he was absolutely correct when he said it was their privilege to be there listening to the trio. The purchase price of a concert ticket DOES NOT buy you the rights to record the performance and if you're going to disrespect the artist(s), don't be surprised if they call you an asshole and leave.

The video does not contain some other words he added like:

sastal 1 year ago
@sastal Mi riferivo forse a te?

Lets face it nobody would dream of taking photos of ,say, Maurizio Pollini in the middle of a classical piano recital--what Jarrett does requires at least as much concentration as that!---besides he IS the greatest living jazz musician without a doubt--i don't know why people expect an extraordinary person to behave in an ordinary way
In one sense i can think of no other musician who shows MORE respect to his audience in respect that he always pushes himself with 200% effort
MrReinhardtd 1 year ago

This is a quote from an interview in the JazzTimes: "What the clip does not capture, he argues, is the clear and firm announcement, in Italian, that the artists have one simple request, and hardly an uncommon one: no flash photography. (Peacock, he adds, is light sensitive.) Yet the trio was bombarded with flashes upon taking the stage, another detail not apparent on the video. Feeling brazenly disrespected, Jarrett lashed back. He does acknowledge, however, that the audience took the fall.

billevanstime 2 years ago
Molto meglio Enrico Pieranunzi.
billevanstime 2 years ago
parolibera 2 years ago
Ripeto:ascolta Pieranunzi e fammi sapere.
billevanstime 2 years ago
ALLEVI!?!?!?
turicollura 2 years ago
ziogustav 2 years ago
ziogustav 2 years ago
Leggi sotto. Sei un pianista. Dovresti capirmi ( anche se dissenti)
billevanstime 2 years ago
Non puoi suonare Evans. Suoni te stesso. Di Evans recuperi le misure dei chorus. Mi auguro Time remembered, very early, un po' meno Waltz for Debby.
billevanstime 2 years ago

ziogustav 2 years ago 2
